Ancient Smyrna (Ancient Greek: Σμύρνη or Σμύρνα)..... was an ancient city located at a central and strategic point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. Due to its advantageous port conditions, its ease of defence and its good inland connections, Smyrna rose to prominence. The ancient city is located at two sites within modern İzmir, Turkey, as well as being its namesake. The first site, probably founded indigenously, rose to prominence during the Archaic Period as one of the principal ancient Greek settlements in western Anatolia. The second, whose foundation is associated with Alexander the Great, reached metropolitan proportions during the period of the Roman Empire. Most of the present-day remains date from the Roman era, the majority from after a 2nd-century AD earthquake. In practical terms, a distinction is often made between Old Smyrna, the initial settlement founded around the 11th century BC, first as an Aeolian settlement, and later taken over and developed during the Archaic Period by the Ionians, and Smyrna proper, the new city moved into from the older one as of the 4th century BC and whose foundation was inspired by Alexander the Great.

These ancient black cottonwoods are amongst the oldest and tallest in the world. They are just off the hiway outside of Fernie. They are 400 years old and 10 stories tall. It is a wonderfully cool place to pull aside and go for a quick stroll.

Essex Bridge on the Shugborough estate in the eighteenth century extended much further into the parkland. It is now the longest remaining packhorse bridge in England with fourteen of its original forty span arches intact.

This packhorse bridge, built to link the Shugborough estate to the village of Great Haywood, in 1550 by the then Earl of Essex for Queen Elizabeth I so that when she visited the estate she could go hunting in the woodland around the local village.

Ancient Andriace (also Andriake)......was a port city located on the southern coast of Turkey in an area known in ancient times as Lycia. Andriace served as the port of Myra that is located 3 mi. [5 km.] to the northeast. Its remains go back at least to the Hellenistic Period (fourth century B.C.) and it evidently was a major trans–shipment point for grain. The grain coming from the plain near Myra, and possibly from boats, bringing the grain from Egypt. From here it could be shipped to Rome or to other parts of the Roman Empire. Although not mentioned specifically in the Bible, the apostle Paul probably changed ships here in Andriace in A.D. 60 on his way to Rome after he had appealed to have his case tried before Caesar. Acts 27:5–6 describes this portion of his trip from Caesarea to Rome in this way: “when we had sailed across the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we landed at Myra in Lycia. There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy and put us on board.” Much of this must have transpired in Andriace, the port of Myra.

This stand of Hornbeam trees are at the front of Hatfiled Forest near the car park, and are over 450 years old. The telltale identifying feature of old Hornbeam trees are the sinuous roots and fluted "columns" around the trunk. Their cousin the Beech tree does not have these. This grove has been maintained for the past few hundred years by rangers, foresters, and farmers through coppicing and pollarading the trees. This protects the tree and makes it stronger over the centuries.

Proceeds from the sale of this photograph will be donated to the National Trust on behalf of Hatfield Forest.
