Ancient Sagalassos....is an active archaeological site in southwest Turkey which contains mostly Hellenistic and Ancient Roman historic ruins, some of them very well preserved. In particular, the Fountain of Antoninler at Sagalassos still has its pretty facade. There are also the remains of a 9,000 seat theatre, a council hall (bouleuterion), a library, rock carved tombs, temples and baths. Part of the Phrygian kingdom from the ninth century BC and then part of the Lydian kingdom, Sagalassos became more urbanized under the Persian Empire from 546BC, becoming a focal point in the region of Pisidia over the course of two centuries. In 334BC, Alexander the Great arrived in the region and attacked Sagalassos, eventually succeeding in destroying it, although its citizens did put up a good fight. Over the coming centuries, the Pisidia region - including Sagalassos - changed hands several times, finally coming under Roman rule in 129BC. The prosperity of Sagalassos fluctuated over the end of the first century BC, but slowly it became more successful, particularly because of the fertility of its land and the production of a material called Sagalassos Red Slip Ware, a type of tableware. Much of this affluence translated into the construction of buildings and monuments, especially during the second century AD, under Hadrian, and up to the third century. Sagalassos began to fall into decline in around 500AD and this was accelerated by a devastating earthquake in 590AD. Although abandoned for a long period of time, the area was further inhabited from the tenth century AD.

Acropolis | Old Temple of Athena 02/05/2018 10h16

The Old Temple of Athena was an Archaic temple located on the Acropolis of Athens between the old Parthenon and Erechteion, built around 525-500 BC. Until its destruction by the Persians in 480 BC, it was the shrine of Athena Polias, the patron deity of the city of Athens. It was located at the center of the Acropolis plateau, probably on the remains of a Mycenaean palace. The complex is sometimes described by the name "Dörpfeld foundations", after the archaeologist who found the location of the temple. It was referred to as "Archaios Neos" (Old temple) by the Greeks.

Acropolis

An acropolis (Ancient Greek: ἀκρόπολις, tr. Akrópolis; from ákros (άκρος) or ákron (άκρον) "highest, topmost, outermost" and pólis "city"; plural in English: acropoles, acropoleis or acropolises) was in ancient Greece a settlement, especially a citadel, built upon an area of elevated ground—frequently a hill with precipitous sides, chosen for purposes of defense. Acropoleis became the nuclei of large cities of classical antiquity, such as ancient Athens, and for this reason they are sometimes prominent landmarks in modern cities with ancient pasts, such as modern Athens.

Ancient Termessos.... is one of the most interesting ancient sites in Antalya. It's located inside the National Park to the north-west of the province, approximately 34 km (21 miles) from the city center. It's a spectacular Psidian city built on the Taurus Mountains at approximately 1050 meters (3445 feet) above the sea level. Today, the site is mentioned in Unesco's Tentative List for World Heritage. The ancient city of Termessos was found by the Solyms who lived in the Psidia region, who have been cited in the Iliad by Homer in connection with the legend of Bellerophon. We don't know much about the Solyms but probabily they were of Anatolian origin, unlike other settlers in the region who usually came from the sea. The city is one of the few places which Alexander the Great couldn't capture it despite his siege in 333 B.C. because it was an eagle's nest built in a valley hidden between the mountains. Even today, in order to visit the city you should have a good physical condition to walk uphill, but when you reach the site the views are breathtaking. During the 2nd century B.C. the Termessians fought against neighbouring Lycian cities and then against Isinda who were their other neighbour in Psidia region. They also fought against Serge, another ancient city near Attaleia (modern day Antalya). Termessos had good relations with Attalos II, king of Pergamon. During the Roman empire, Termessos became a Roman ally so they received their independent status from the Senate in 71 B.C. The inhabitants abandoned the city in the 5th century A.D. after a gradual decline and earthquakes which destroyed its aqueduct and thus their water supply. Termessos is one of the best preserved ancient cities of Turkey. The most significant remains of the site are the fortified city walls, towers, king's road, Hadrian's gate, agora, stoas, gymnasium, heroon, odeon, theatre, tombs, temples, houses, shops, cisterns and drainage system. All of this is located in a dense vegetation, surrounded by typical Mediterranean flora. Amongst the sarcophagi, there are the ones of Alcates, the rival of Antigonos who was one of Alexander's generals, and of Agatemeros. The views from the theater are magnificent, which had a capacity of five thousand spectators. So far, there isn't any scientific excavations held in the city.

This model is my take on a subject of ancient roman architecture. It does not represent any particular real building. Instead I took inspiration from them and I tried to model features that I thought are the most prominent. I mixed them with more unusual ones like placing columns in groups instead of using a regular grid pattern or using several smaller stairs from three sides of the building instead of a single and wide ones leading only to the main front doors.

Pergamon or Pergamum (Greek: Πέργαμος, ) was an ancient Greek city in modern-day Turkey, in Mysia, north-western Anatolia, 16 miles from the Aegean Sea, located on a promontory on the north side of the river Caicus (modern day Bakırçay), that became the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic period, under the Attalid dynasty, 281–133 BC. Today, the main sites of ancient Pergamon are to the north and west of the modern city of Bergama.

The Attalid kingdom was the rump state left after the collapse of the Kingdom of Thrace.

The Attalids, the descendants of Attalus, father of Philetaerus who came to power in 281 BC following the collapse of the Kingdom of Thrace, were among the most loyal supporters of Rome in the Hellenistic world. Under Attalus I (241-197 BC), they allied with Rome against Philip V of Macedon, during the first and second Macedonian Wars, and again under Eumenes II (197-158 BC), against Perseus of Macedon, during the Third Macedonian War. For support against the Seleucids, the Attalids were rewarded with all the former Seleucid domains in Asia Minor.

The Attalids ruled with intelligence and generosity. Many documents survive showing how the Attalids would support the growth of towns through sending in skilled artisans and by remitting taxes. They allowed the Greek cities in their domains to maintain nominal independence. They sent gifts to Greek cultural sites like Delphi, Delos, and Athens. They defeated the invading Celts. They remodeled the Acropolis of Pergamum after the Acropolis in Athens. When Attalus III (138-133 BC) died without an heir in 133 BC he bequeathed the whole of Pergamon to Rome, in order to prevent a civil war.

Cyrene was an ancient Greek and Roman city near present-day Shahhat, Libya. It was the oldest and most important of the five Greek cities in the region. It gave eastern Libya the classical name Cyrenaica that it has retained to modern times.

Cyrene was founded in 630 BC as a settlement of Greeks from the Greek island of Thera (Santorini).

Cyrene is referred to in the deuterocanonical book 2 Maccabees. The book of 2 Maccabees itself is said by its author to be an abridgment of a five-volume work by a Hellenized Jew by the name of Jason of Cyrene who lived around 100 BC.

Cyrene is also mentioned in the New Testament. A Cyrenian named Simon carried the cross of Christ.

Cyrene is now an archeological site near the village of Shahhat. One of its more significant features is the temple of Apollo which was originally constructed as early as 7th century BC. Other ancient structures include a temple to Demeter and a partially unexcavated temple to Zeus There is a large necropolis approximately 10 km between Cyrene and its ancient port of Apollonia. Since 1982, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
