Amtrak's Empire Builder stops in Staples, Minnesota at this Northern Pacific depot built in 1909.

The 2008 purchase of this unstaffed station by the local Staples Historical Society has immensely benefited the historic two-story structure. Under previous BNSF ownership, the building was in a deplorable condition and almost unsavable. Thanks to the commendable efforts of the historical society, however, an extensive exterior renovation has been completed. While the interior is still in need of significant repair, little changes such as the addition of more seating, reading material, and flowers/houseplants have made this a cozy, cared for station that contrasts starkly with the dark, cold (there was no heat due to broken windows), and uninviting place it once was.

The Empire Builder is scheduled to stop here in the early morning hours - 1:42 AM westbound and 4:09 AM eastbound. This photo was taken shortly after departure of a late eastbound.
