Stepping off the train in Memphis for a shot of the recently restored Central Station while traveling on train #58, the Northbound City of New Orleans train. This trip was in April 2002. My middle brother and I traveled to Chicago for a slice of Chicago style pizza and a little sight seeing, he returned the day after we arrived Chicago, while I went the distance, taking the Southwest Chief to LA, staying in Santa Monica a day, then taking the Sunset Limited to New Orleans, staying in Metairie a couple of nights before traveling back north on train #58, making a big counterclockwise loop over thousands of miles across beautiful America!

Truckee, California-Truckee Railroad Museum located in Southern Pacific caboose #1268 (The caboose is a Class C-30-4 built in 1947 by the American Car and Foundry. The class was the first bay window cabooses used by SP.)
The eastbound Empire Builder meets its westbound counterpart in the siding at Harlem, Montana. If both Amtrak trains are running on time as they cross Montana, this is the spot that they normally meet. Ordinarily the westbound will take the siding for the eastbound.
In May of 2012 my wife and I took Amtrak out of Tomah Wisconsin, to visit family in Maryland. On May 17th we switched trains in Chicago at Union Station. As we entered our car, a Metra train was visible.
A view out the rear window of the westbound Empire Builder as the eastbound counterpart passes by in Harlem, Montana. If both trains are running on time, Harlem is one of four locations on the over 2,000 mile long route where a meet between the westbound and eastbound trains takes place.

The train information board inside the beautiful train station. I arrived from Savanna GA via the Silver Meteor, after taking the City of New Orleans Train to New Orleans. The cancelled Crescent due to a fowled main line in Louisiana is indicated on the board. I decided that I was going to find a way to go by train so I decided to catch a bird to Savanna from New Orleans and then had a very good ride up the east coast on the Meteor. Taking an unusual situation and thinking on my feet, I got it to work for me! :-)
