Amicalola Falls State Park; Dawsonville, GA

We hiked from the Hike Inn to the top of Springer Mountain, which is the far southern end of the Appalacian Trail. Then we hiked about the first 90 feet of the trail to find some bathrooms.

I just couldn't get enough of all the different splashes and movement of Amicalola Falls. This is looking down from the bridge across the face of the falls to the rocks and splashes as it tumbled on down to the bottom

The color of the fall leaves has reached an incredible peak today as hardwoods show tremendously saturated yellows, oranges, reds and browns under clear blue skies. This is a scene from Crown Mountain, just south of Dahlonega near the southern edge of the Chattahoochee National Forest in North Georgia.

I took a hike in Amicalola Falls State Park, Georgia, USA this week. It was lovely but most of the green leaves have not come in yet. The pine trees stood out amongst the very blue sky.

Another of the many moths I found at the Hike Inn.

This is a couple weeks old and was taken in the middle of the afternoon. Most of the color was gone at this height, but it still turned out pretty well. The platform was crowded with people but I was able to get my tripod set up and camera in position.

My polarizer filter helped and my friend Carl helped with a Cokin Neutral Density filter that was flat, which I held over the end of the lens. By doing so, I was able to slow the exposure enough to get the nice soft effect of the water falls.

I cropped out the bottom portion of the photo as the water was only on the far right and it just wasn't interesting enough and it detracted from the overall composition. It was a beautiful day as you can see with the gorgeous blue sky. I pumped up the color in the trees a bit to add to the photo without making it look fake (unless you think otherwise).

What I like about this water fall is that you can park pretty close and its a short 1/4 mile hike on a fairly flat surface. Anyone from Atlanta should make the trip, Autumn, Spring or Summer, its beautiful and worth the drive.

Amicalola, a Cherokee Indian word meaning “tumbling waters,” is an appropriate name for the 729-foot falls, the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River.

Smae snake as #1 and #2 in slightly different shot. I can't decide if I like #1 or #3 better. Approximately 16-20" Northern Water Snake? at Amicalola Falls State Park in North Georgia. Best viewed large. Slightly cropped and otherwise unedited.
