Reschensee or Lake Reschen is an artificial lake in the western portion of South Tyrol, Italy, approximately 2 km south of the Reschen Pass, which forms the border with Austria. The lake is famous for the steeple of a submerged 14th-century church; when the water freezes, this can be reached on foot. A legend says that during winter one can still hear church bells ring. In reality the bells were removed from the tower on July 18, 1950, a week before the demolition of the church nave and the creation of the lake.
Knowing the Karersee only from pictures, I knew I had to check out the location on my Dolomites trip.
Arriving there without further research except the address, I was a bit shocked of how little water the lake holds. Turns out that it is fed only by some subsurface springs from the Latemar mountain which run dry during the long rainless summer periods. I guess the low water level and the lack of rain is also responsible for the huge amount of algae in it, which also I didn't expect.
However, I must say, despite all of this, when with the setting sun the nice warm light falls down on the trees behind lake Karerseee, it is still a magical place where one could spend seemingly an eternity.
The little water left as always has its nice deep green color, as if the pond wants to show that it doesn't give up and will grow strong again. The view between those two trees occur to me as if they want to encourage you to step between them and follow the light into the lake.
