I am just like every average teenage girl trying to find who I am and what I want to do in my future. I have many people in my life to influence who I want to be or who I don’t want to be. My favorite color is purple. I think it is a really pretty color. I love the summer it makes me very happy. I love to wear makeup. I don’t pile it on my face like some girls do. I’m not a real girly-girl. I love to wear sun dresses and look nice, but I don’t wear them all the time. I mostly wear jeans and a cute shirt. I really don’t like a person who sag their pants, that really annoys me. I really don’t like rap music either, pop music is alright, but I like a lot of country music as well as some rock music. I also love hanging out with my aunt. I know sounds “odd” hanging out with my aunt, but she is five years older than me and we get along very well, she is one of my best friends. We hang out almost every weekend.

My philosophy is to do my best, no matter how hard it is. I will take my photos and be unique. I may take ideas from other people, but I will take the idea and change to be “me”. If I can’t change it then I will ask that person to use that idea.

When I was taking pictures for my self-portrait I tried to think what can do. I decided to put on some makeup and a cute top and take some pictures some were good and some were the best. Thinking of an alter ego was really challenging. I finally decided to be a “gangster”. I chose this because I’m the total opposite of a “gangster”.

Halloween '07. This was taken at work Saturday night. No one recognized me when I walked in the door and a few customers (I was bartending) had a bet going - "No offense, but my buddy and I have a little bet going...either you look like this every day or this is the best costume EVER."

Right there. I won.

First, let me say that I don't believe in buying a pre-packaged costume for 80 bucks. Ever since I was a kid, my mom was building costumes for me from scratch...in kindergarten, my mom built giant butterfly wings for me from little pieces of wood and orange fabric - with bike reflectors on it - I was dressed in a yellow turtleneck, yellow tights, yellow sneakers, and blonde pigtails...with yellow pipe cleaners for antennae. In fifth grade, my mother sewed a gown for me from an old priest's vestment (white and sparkly)...I was Vanna White..it was neat. My boyfriend that day kept telling everyone that he was Pat Sajack, yet if I remember correctly, he was dressed as a convict. Fitting.

I think Halloween is for originality, not for dressing in a pre-packaged "naughty devil" or "sexy angel" costume - the bar was filled to the brim with those and I saw each girl die a little inside when she ran into her costume twin...come on people, this is why we stopped shopping at the gap for anything but basics, right?

Either way, I must say that New York really outdid itself this year regardless. There were very few people Saturday night on the streets who were NOT wearing a costume. So...CHEERS.

Off the soapbox now. This. Is Ilona. She is my gothic alter ego. All these pieces were either things I had, or procured from the West and East villages. I had such a great time that night (and was so busy) that I'm not even sure how I ended up on the Jersey shore by 7:30 Sunday morning. So much fun.

Alter Ego questions the mimetic inter-relationship between two persons. It creates a mental conflict of self-localization, a feeling of self-loss and a feeling of empathy at the same time. The work is foundation for a cooperative with neurophysiological researchers, e.g. with Prof. Alain Berthoz of at Collège de France in Paris. It plays an important role in the research areas of self-other perception and mechanisms of sympathy and empathy research and their disorders, e.g. schizophrenia and autism.
