Away from the large amount of wide-body aircraft that dominates Japanese domestic air travel, narrow-body aircraft are also kept busy on a variety of routes across Japan either with the legacy or low-cost carriers.
All Nippon Airways has for a long time been a loyal Boeing 737 customer, having taken delivery of their first examples back in 1969, this initial fleet having lasted until 1992 when ANA became the first Japanese carrier to order the Airbus A320, these original having since been retired from service having been replaced by Airbus A320neo and Airbus A321neo aircraft.
ANA went back to Boeing 737 operations in 2003 following on from the Boeing 737-500s coming online from Air Nippon, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ANA with the last withdrawn by 2020. This was followed by the Boeing 737-700 which arrived at the end of 2005 with all examples either being retired or transferred to Air Do which ANA have shareholdings in the regional carrier. The carrier were also the launch customer of the Boeing 737-700ER in 2007, however these have long since been scrapped after just 9 years of service.
This just leaves the Boeing 737-800s which ANA operates 39 in regular service, first deliveries beginning in 2008 with the last example arriving at the end of 2018. All Nippon Airways are a customer for the Boeing 737 MAX, having an order for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8s which are due to be delivered from 2025.
ANA operates 2 daily flights between Tokyo-Haneda and Masuda, otherwise known as Hagi-Iwami; Masuda is a small city located in the Chūgoku Region in southwest Japan. The airport is relatively small with just All Nippon Airways and its regional subsidiary, ANA Wings providing regular flights to Tokyo-Haneda and seasonal flights to Osaka-Itami... So small that just 2 flights a day regularly serves Hagi-Iwami.
Currently, All Nippon Airways operates 39 Boeing 737s, all of which are Boeing 737-800s. All Nippon Airways have 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8s on-order.

All Nippon Airways is by far the largest airline operating in Japan, not only with just the airline itself but also holding a number of shares in other carriers as well as owning a select number outright. One of them is their subsidiary, Air Japan which will be rebranded as AirJapan from late-January 2024.
What is particularly interesting about All Nippon Airways is how they operate their Boeing 787 fleet, which includes all of their Boeing 787-8s, a large selection of Boeing 787-9s and all of their current Boeing 787-10s. Since 2018, All Nippon Airways began using their Air Japan subsidiary to operate their Boeing 787 flights which is denoted by markings on the rear fuselage.
Air Japan dates back to 1990 as World Air Network, being a charter airline under All Nippon Airways; the name was changed to Air Japan in 2000 and soon operating Boeing 767-300ERs on behalf of All Nippon Airways on international flights.
With increasing competition, especially within low-cost long-haul with Japan Airlines introducing Zipair, All Nippon Airways in 2022 sill re-establish Air Japan as a low-cost carrier to compete against Zipair. The rebranded AirJapan will commence operations in early-2024 and will utilise Boeing 787-8s reconfigured in an all-Economy layout fitted with 297 seats in a 9-abreast, 3-3-3 configuration.
Like Zipair, Economy will not utilise seatback in-flight entertainment, instead passengers will use personal devices and stream content via the onboard WiFi. Unlike Zipair however, the carrier has decided not to utilise a premium cabin.
The first Boeing 787-8 to transfer is one of All Nippon Airways oldest examples, JA803A which was LN7 on Boeing's production line; the airframe was ferried from Tokyo-Haneda on 2nd December 2023 to Xiamen-Gaoqi to be refitted and repainted prior to transfer over to the new AirJapan where it will expected to be delivered by 26th January 2024.
Currently, All Nippon Airways operates 80 Boeing 787s, which includes 35 Boeing 787-8s, 42 Boeing 787-9s and 3 Boeing 787-10s. All Nippon Airways have 6 Boeing 787-9s and 12 Boeing 787-10s on-order.
Juliet Alpha Eight Zero Three Alpha was delivered new to All Nippon Airways on 22nd August 2012, no longer part of the fleet since 2nd December 2023 and will transfer over to AirJapan from 26th January 2024. She is powered by 2 Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.

Forming the majority of All Nippon Airways fleet, the largest airline in Japan operates a variety of Boeing 787s in which the carrier operates the most anywhere in the world although that number will be surpassed in the future. The wide-body jet typically operates on either domestic and long-haul flights from their 2 main hubs at Tokyo-Haneda and Tokyo-Narita, the latter of which is primarily dedicated to international traffic by the carrier.
All Nippon Airways was the second airline in Asia to join Star Alliance back in 1999 after Thai Airways International who founded the alliance alongside 4 other carriers back in 1997. All Nippon Airways was the first Japanese carrier to be inaugurated into an airline alliance, with Japan Airlines having joined Oneworld 8 years later in 2007.
For All Nippon Airways, the carrier codeshares with the vast majority of fellow Star Alliance members and has a considerably advantage over Japan Airlines operating the lion-share of both domestic and international flights to and from Japan. In 2011, All Nippon Airways route portfolio expanded significantly following the introduction of joint-venture agreement with Lufthansa Group towards Europe, and United Airlines towards the USA. This allows the carriers to co-ordinate their schedules and as well as appearing on each other's reservation systems.
Being a major player within Star Alliance, All Nippon Airways have a number of aircraft that appear in the alliance's logo-jet colour scheme; All Nippon Airways have 3 Boeing 787s that feature the colour scheme, these all being on the Boeing 787-9. The first appeared brand new in 2018, however a further 2 examples appeared in 2022 and 2023 as replacements for withdrawn Boeing 777s that previously carried this livery.
Currently, All Nippon Airways operates 80 Boeing 787s, which includes 36 Boeing 787-8s, 41 Boeing 787-9s and 3 Boeing 787-10s. All Nippon Airways have 7 Boeing 787-9s and 12 Boeing 787-10s on-order.
Juliet Alpha Eight Nine Nine Alpha is one of 41 Boeing 787-9s operated by All Nippon Airways, delivered new to the carrier on 30th September 2018 and she is powered by 2 Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. She has carried Star Alliance colours since new.

Some pre-takeoff champagne was in order, as the attentive ANA flight attendants quickly made their way through the cabin making introductions and taking meal orders. The meal was actually quite nice, and you can tell because I gobbled it all down without having a second thought of taking a photo first.
I'm ashamed to say I kept the glass for a souvenir. Completely by accident, of course! ;)
