Following on from All Nippon Airways having been launch customer of the Boeing 787 back in 2004 to becoming the first airline to take delivery of the aircraft in 2011, the Japanese-carrier has been fiercely loyal to the airframe, and it shouldn't come as a surprise the airline is currently the largest operator anywhere in the world.
As well as being a launch customer for the Boeing 787, the carrier was also the launch customer for the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines and have been fitted onto all variants. The carrier was one of many however to have experienced corrosion and cracking issues to the intermediate turbines which saw aircraft grounded whilst awaiting new engines.
Unfortunately for Rolls-Royce, the relationship between themselves and All Nippon Airways has deteriorated to a point that the carrier for their most recent order of 21 Boeing 787s in early-2020 decided that General Electric GEnx-1B engines will power the newest aircraft which will include 7 Boeing 787-9s and 14 Boeing 787-10s.
All Nippon Airways are not the only carrier to have jumped ship from Rolls-Royce to General Electric to power their latest Boeing 787s, the others being Air New Zealand who too were heavily impacted by engine defects, and more recently British Airways who have continued to express frustration with unserviceable aircraft.
The first GE-powered Boeing 787s arrived with All Nippon Airways between 2021 and 2022, the 3 Boeing 787s are primarily used for domestic flights with 375 seats in total, operating alongside 2 much earlier Boeing 787-9s fitted with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000s in mid-2014. This is a similar story for their Boeing 787-10s, the earliest examples fitted with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000s dedicated to international flight, whilst the latest aircraft delivered from 2024 are utilised on domestic flights with 429 seats in total.
Currently, All Nippon Airways have 85 Boeing 787s, which includes 34 Boeing 787-8s, 44 Boeing 787-9s and 7 Boeing 787-10s. All Nippon Airways have 4 Boeing 787-9s and 10 Boeing 787-10s on-order.
Juliet Alpha Nine Three Five Alpha is one of 44 Boeing 787-9s operated by All Nippon Airways, delivered new to the carrier on 27th November 2022 and she is powered by 2 General Electric GEnx-1B64 engines.
