Captured in Agra Fort

From lower left to upper right - Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon and Mars in pretty much a straight line. Mercury was just out of shot below Venus - not even the fisheye could get all five at once!

Day 208-365

Bodging an 8" Moonlight base plate onto a 10" scope..

Always good to have a second opinion...

Polar Drift Alignment got possible 16 minutes after sunset.

I was using Chilean summer time then. Sunset was at 19:21 May 1, 2019, and polar drift alignment got possible at 19:37, 16 minutes after sunset at the height. Sirius and Canopus were already visible then.

The guiding system was made with Fujinon 1:2.8/75mm C-Mount Lens, Pentax x2 Extender, Starlight Xpress Lodestar Autoguider, and PHD2 Guiding. Sorry for the dirty sensor rich in dust (small circles).

Polar Drift Alignment made mount alignment very easy and precise in both hemispheres. I did not use conventional gimmick as below.

Its been a late wet season this year and raining all month. I was beginning to wonder if I would even get to see the planets at all, let alone a decent chance for a photo.

But on the 26th, the best day for alignment, the heavens gave their approval and kept the clouds away. I was even able to get Pleiades to join in.

This is an individual frame from the timelapse that I posted earlier today. 20 sec exposure with a Samyang 14mm lens at f/2.8 and 6400 iso.

I planned this image many months ago. I knew the rising Sun would be in position for this shooting angle for only 2 days, and luckily this aligned with when I was visiting family in Brixham. I arrived in Brixham at midnight and was up at 4am to get the shot. Unfortunately, the sky was black with clouds when I arrived at the the location. I could make out the bit of sky, here and there, popping through the clouds, but by 5am the chance of capturing this alignment looked bleak.

I’d expected to see other photographers, but was surprised to find that I was the only one.

With half an hour to go, and nothing else to do, I began a sacred African cloud-go-away dance. Chanting in an ancient tongue, I summoned the cloud God and asked him if he’d kindly shift those clouds by 5:20am. Clearly impressed with my dance moves, the clouds began to thin out. By 5:25am the sky was clear in the right places.

Day 319 (v 6.0) - functioning nonetheless

I spent a day at Griffith Park's Observatory, and took a loop of the area along Hollywood, Sunset, Santa Monica Blvds. Visited Koreatown and Chinatown before a nightly departure. LA is huge and the traffic is terrible!

Does anyone see a problem with this track alignment?

When life knocks you down, just roll over and enjoy the stars :)

This shot is from a few years back, when I was out at Trillium Lake to enjoy the Perseids Meteor Shower. Being my first night-out shooting, I consider myself lucky to have captured the Perseids. It really did not start out that way. The first half of the night was more of hide and seek, as the meteors were adorning the skies, especially where the camera was not pointed at. I was much worried that the possibilities would only go down, as the moon was coming up.

As the night was wading, the moon was coming up the horizon. But only after I decided to stop chasing the Perseids, did I notice that the moon brought in Venues and Jupiter along, in a lovely celestial alignment. As I zoomed in to capture the night sky along with the Moon, Venue & Jupiter - a Perseids - decided to join the show too. I couldn't be more glad, when all things came in alignment :)

Perseids Meteor Shower is one of the more consistent meteor showers in the northern sky. Its coming up in a few weeks (Aug 12-14, 2015) and the waxing crescent (3%) would not be hindering the same. Have you planned where you would be enjoying the show from for 2015 ?!

Strange alignment

Back in 2008, our tour group stopped in Venice, Italy for a few days. Our group was together for one final night after two weeks travelling around Italy, sampling local foods, catching local transport, singing, taking photos, drinking wine, and eating gelato. A few people were due to leave as the rest of us continued to travel for another week. We had dinner by this canal and I just happened to be standing there taking a few shots when the sun, an aeroplane, and a seagull lined up. No, I didn't insert them using some app, because, well why the hell would you! It would look much better with a unicorn and a pug. Despite years of waiting, no other alignment has come my way..... Here's to you, Venice!

In photography as in life, we can strive to create our own opportunities, but we need to keep our eyes open for opportunities we didn't even know existed.

We put #09 on the rack with The Alignment Guy after last week's BIR track day. Verifying all is still well.

Thanks Jeff.
