October 14, 2023 - Annular Solar Eclipse at Bryce Canyon National Park, on Annular Solar Eclipse Day! This was my second visit ever with my Mom to Bryce Canyon, Utah. Photo Shoot with my Mom, Adrienne Drago, Sunny Hwang, Warren Finch, Lacey Horner, and Ksenia Krupina!

I went out for a 20km walk through the Brecon Beacons yesterday, part of the way around I noticed the previous 4 peaks I had just walked on lined up into a nice group. These peaks are actually spread over 2 miles (it seems further when you have walked it!!!).

A great day in the hills

Thanks for looking!

Figuring out a system for my floating marks.

Re-processed and uploaded 11/10/09 - First try at Zerene Stacker. Two images. I first tried another picture that was four images, more poorly lined up, and my computer completely refused to finish them; when it finally did, they came out with so many artifacts it was awful. The alignment tool doesn't work too well apparently, so in the future I think I'll try cropping them all to line them up better. This shot still took awhile for my wheezing old PC (1gb ram); even with every other unnecessary program turned off, it still froze on me a couple times. So until I get it sped back up, don't expect many of these type of images. That said, I do like the results. The important face and other areas lined up quite well; although there are a few artifacts still (the hairs on his front legs doubled a bit, and every bit of dust on my image sensor was cloned during alignment so I ended up cleaning twice as much junk!). Still pretty pleased with the results, now if only I could fix the damage to his right anterior median eye :)

Thanks to Thomas Shahan for helping with ID - I could tell this wasn't P. audax, but it was the first of this species I've ever seen. Phidippus otiosus - another one to add to my list of species found. I made the actual list now, and there's a current version on the main page for my Salticidae set. Turns out I had a few incorrect IDs, and was able to pin others down, so I also changed a few titles and descriptions on other jumper photos to reflect that. Still have to finish changing tags, but I'll get around to it soon.

Found down in some tree bark in Mohawk Park. I love the iridescent facial scales on this jumper, as well as his incredibly heavy proportions. Such an impressive-looking spider, as well as a new species for me! I had to re-photograph him to get some shots I was pleased with. The green was a much more complimentary backdrop for this individual as well, I'm trying to decide whether to delete the other shots. I wish there was a "scrap folder" option on flickr, so people who've collected or commented it wouldn't be inconvenienced.

The Empire State Building aligned with the east tower of the Manhattan Bridge. I redid this one with a bit more contrast.

Alignments appear and pass in the Sagrada Familia, even in the gift store. I saw this one coming like a planetary conjunction as I moved along with the crowd in a gift shop.

Cruising South of the South China Sea yesterday morning and an amazing sunrise complete with the alignment of the planets. I believe you see Jupiter, Venus, and Mars. Just amazing!

Water droplets exercise at the club tonight. Thought I'd better try so I can help!

Unexpected hazard: dust on the surface of the water!!

Panasonic G1 + 14-45 lens + 5x macro lens. Off camera flash.

From lower left to upper right - Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon and Mars in pretty much a straight line. Mercury was just out of shot below Venus - not even the fisheye could get all five at once!

Day 208-365

Compositionally, I think this is my favorite of my Painted Lady pics from last week.

Bodging an 8" Moonlight base plate onto a 10" scope..

Always good to have a second opinion...

I planned this image many months ago. I knew the rising Sun would be in position for this shooting angle for only 2 days, and luckily this aligned with when I was visiting family in Brixham. I arrived in Brixham at midnight and was up at 4am to get the shot. Unfortunately, the sky was black with clouds when I arrived at the the location. I could make out the bit of sky, here and there, popping through the clouds, but by 5am the chance of capturing this alignment looked bleak.

I’d expected to see other photographers, but was surprised to find that I was the only one.

With half an hour to go, and nothing else to do, I began a sacred African cloud-go-away dance. Chanting in an ancient tongue, I summoned the cloud God and asked him if he’d kindly shift those clouds by 5:20am. Clearly impressed with my dance moves, the clouds began to thin out. By 5:25am the sky was clear in the right places.

Those of you that know me know I love Bandits....Milwaukee Road still in action decades after the end in '85. So, when a series of absolutely incredible events led me to G67 parked in Nashotah Siding, in a perfect location for photo ops, without a crew, and a solo Soo 4512 in proper position cab forward, I let the shutter start snapping. G67 sat there from around 17:00 to about 21:20, most of the time with me trackside, and I got a ton of great shots. I'll share the best ones here.

This shot is figuratively and literally planetary alignment for me in so many ways.

Note: This would have been a photo of two white dots on a black background, but its actually two planets, Venus and Jupiter that ‘appear’ to be close together this week. I composed the shot with the planets peeking at us through the branches of a bare tree to make it a little more ‘interesting’. (Best i could come up with at the time based on where i was with my family).

This is actually what astronomer refer to as a planetary ‘Alignment’ or ‘Conjunction’.

We are looking at them ‘Across’ the solar system. They’re not actually next to each other.

Using a baseball field as an example, say you hit the ball out of the park and can take your time trotting around the bases as the crowd goes wild. As you start your jaunt to first base and glance to the left, across the baseball field, think of the pitcher’s mound as the Sun, the second baseman would be Venus and center fielder, Jupiter. The two planets just ‘appear’ to be close together based on your line-of-sight from where you are, but are actually very far apart and in different parts of the Solar System, or baseball field :—).

So, that is what we are seeing this week.

This is an individual frame from the timelapse that I posted earlier today. 20 sec exposure with a Samyang 14mm lens at f/2.8 and 6400 iso.

Day 319 (v 6.0) - functioning nonetheless

I spent a day at Griffith Park's Observatory, and took a loop of the area along Hollywood, Sunset, Santa Monica Blvds. Visited Koreatown and Chinatown before a nightly departure. LA is huge and the traffic is terrible!

Wednesday, March 5 - 65/366

I have a lot of work to do, but I had an MS event to photograph which was a non-negotiable, had to attend event at 6pm. Thank goodness it was just located 2 blocks away and I could go there for an hour and a half, then come back to work and finish things up. On my way there, it was too easy to stop and admire the gorgeous view at twilight.

I left some notes on the picture. If anyone can offer some technical advice, I'd REALLY LOVE that!!

In photography as in life, we can strive to create our own opportunities, but we need to keep our eyes open for opportunities we didn't even know existed.
