Tangential Dreams is a climbable sinuous tower made from off-the-shelf timber and digitally designed via algorithmic rules. One thousand “tangent” thin wooden pieces are held in position via horizontal pieces rotating along a central axis, gently moving in the wind like leaves of a giant tree. The pieces are stencilled with inspiring sentences, and dynamically lit by LED strips during the night time. In line with this year’s theme, the piece is reminiscent of Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man’s movement and helicoid inventions as well as his deep, systematic, understanding of the rules behind form to create art. From a wooden flame all the way to a giant desert cactus, the complex simplicity of the art piece will trigger many interpretations, many dreams. The audience will read and discuss the poetry written on each tangent coming from the Burners’ community itself via our crowd funding campaign like a collage of sentences creating a serendipitous “cadavre exquis” of thoughts.

I don't have a lot of room for quilting, so most of what I make are baby quilts for the Christ Child Society. Just finished this a few days ago. The pattern is Algorithm by GE Quilt Designs. The fabric was a layer cake I had, but I don't recall the collection name.

I wrote an algorithm for the laser that outputs cut and perforation vectors for a folding light tower with almost any dimension. The tower's top can be removed to expose a place to attach a magnetically fastened LED light and battery. The starfields require special calculations so that the light finds its way through two folds of paper.

foster_25015045_0007. I find beach photos, especially of enlarged distant people, a fascinating subject to glitch, perhpas because the human presence is already encoded in the inaccuracies of the pixel clusters.

Qualunque sia il suo caratere manifesto, ogni cosa mantiene il suo mistero: sia ciò che appare sia ciò che è nascosto, la conoscenza e l'ignoranza, la vita e la morte, il giorno e la notte.

do we still design our spaces this way, thinking ahead 100, 200 years, visualizing the relationship between the structures we build and their place within the natural world? not just big spaces, big structures, public places, artistic statements, but everything? have we lost our appreciation for the importance that every single, manufactured element around us has in our lives? how a building in a setting, a home, can bring us joy simply by being the result of a thoughtful, skillful person's intentions, generations before?

the world is not an algorithm. life is not an algorithm, thought is not an algorithm. culture is not an algorithm. art is not an algorithm. work is not an algorithm. aesthetic sensibility is not an algorithm. taste is not an algorithm. politics is not an algorithm. conversation is not an algorithm. writing is not an algorithm. eating is not an algorithm. travel is not an algorithm. music is not an algorithm. friends are not an algorithm. beauty is not an algorithm. joy is not an algorithm. what i like is not an algorithm. what i should like is not an algorithm. i am not an algorithm.

A frame from a video made in the following way: Thirty particles move linearly at various constant speeds, in randomly chosen directions, bouncing off the sides. For each pixel, determine the set of distances from the pixel to each particle (distance here calculated as the maximum absolute difference of x and y coordinates). Sort this set of distances. Color the pixel a grey value based on the ratio (distances[6]-distances[5])/(distances[7]-distances[5]).
