The main mosque in Ahmedabad is the Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque). It was commissioned by Ahmed Shah I for his private use and was completed in 1424. The yellow sandstone building incorporates material from demolished Hindu and Jain temples. This photograph is of part of the main prayer hall, which has 260 intricately carved columns and 15 domes.
Although the action in Ahmedabad was made up of only 6 persons, photographer included, we marched bravely from the Sabarmati Ashram, the historic location from where Mahatma Gandhi started and coordinated much of the Independence movement in India. We proceeded for about 1.5 kilometers to a university called Gujarat Vidyapith, which was again founded by Mahatma Gandhi and of which he was the life-long Chancellor. At the gates of Gujarat Vidyapith, we constructed a 350 out of candles and put up the flag where we collected signatures. Along the way to the university, many stopped to ask us about climate change and the Copenhagen summit - from auto-rickshaw drivers to policemen to children to elderly couples to commuters waiting for a bus. A number of people on motorcycles and cars also pulled up and took time out to sign.

When I arrived in Ahmedabad a few days ago, I had not had access to the internet for the days before and therefore could not secure a hotel reservation. A auto rickshaw driver took me to three hotels of which the first two were not acceptable from my point of view. No, they were none of the shown ones, I cannot even remember where they were.
While wandering the street of the old part or old city of Ahmedabad, I came across these hotels which I found interesting to photograph but I am not too sure how much I would enjoy stying at them for a few days ... I guess I am a spoilt Westerner to some extent ;-)

A most unusual hailstorm in Ahmedabad. A pre-summer Sunday afternoon turned to rain and an intense pelting of hail for half an hour. The ground was covered with ice.
Ahmedabad has dry tropical weather, and hasn't seen hail in over three decades.
