Gira Sarabhai, possibly at the Calico Textile Museum which she founded. Gira was one of the immensely talented members of the Sarabhai family. This poorly defined photo is the only one I have of her.

Shot on Relief Road, Ahmedabad. This is the black and white version. Although I think I prefer it in colour overall, the monochrome makes the front rickshaw less distracting.
Other thoughts in hindsight on this shot: I think it would've been better with more depth of field, shot at a higher ISO. (This was 35mm at f/2, ISO 640).
Which do you prefer?
Taken on a photo trip with Maciej Dakowicz in Gujarat, Jan 2012.
A camera can sometimes be a barrier between 2 people. I'm learning that to get the shot you want, you often have to be in 2 places at once - encouraging the subject whilst also controlling the equipment. To bury your head in thoughts of apeture and shutter speed leaves your subject out in the cold, staring blankly into a lens.
I'm spending more time chatting as i'm snapping, or shooting without looking through the viewfinder in order to maintain eye contact and keep the subject loose. With these women, I took one posed shot, then made a lame joke in broken Hindi and quickly caught the reaction before their 'camera faces' had time to re-set.
The pols of Ahmedabad are endangered; the centre of the old city is being gutted to build new, taller concrete buildings - some of which collapse every year or so... But these old houses have their stories, and round the market area, near the Jami Masjid, there are still streets full of old building, and a few pols where the residents are fighting to preserve them.
I haven't yet been on the heritage walk but have heard them highly recommended; and if they're still 50 rupees, it's an incredible bargain - www.gujarattourism.com/showpage.aspx?contentid=141&we...

Ahmedabad's old city is thick with heritage buildings, some of which are being preserved with government grants while others are decaying. Fractured ownership sometimes makes renovations challenging.
