C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) in the morning skies over the Apache Trail in Arizona's Superstition Mountains. This was a "just for fun" composite, as this particular alignment would not be possible. Sky shot was taken on the morning of 7/7.
C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was discovered on March 27th, 2020.
The NEOWISE mission (Near Earth Object survey using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer space telecope) is where the comet's name came from.
Comets are basically "dirty snowballs" made of an aggregate of dust, ice, and (as the sun warms them) gases. Comets originate in the outer reaches of the Solar System, in a region known as the Oort Cloud. They can have orbits that take them around the sun in a short period or long one. For example, Halley's Comet visits the inner Solar System once every 76 years. Comet NEOWISE is a long period comet, and will not return for another 6,700 years.
Astronomers have discovered faint comets with greater frequency as imaging technologies have improved markedly in recent years. Every time a new comet is discovered inbound, astronomers are keen to calculate its orbit, potential brightness, rough size, composition, and speculation about whether or not it may become bright enough to put on a celestial show visible to those without telescopes.
As a comet approaches its closest point to the sun (perihelion), the sun's radiation warms it, causing the comet to shed material into space and grow the appearance of a double tail. The whitish tail is made of dust, while the bluish and straighter tail is ionized gases reacting to the solar wind. The nucleus of the comet is surrounded by the coma, a halo of greenish ionized gas.
The tail will always face away from the sun, so when the comet is inbound, the tail will be behind it. When the comet is outbound, the tail is actually in front of it! So, in this photo, the comet is actually traveling in the same direction as its tail!
When a comet comes through perihelion and gets far enough away from the sun, it may rarely get bright enough to put on a naked eye spectacle for viewers on Earth. Naked eye comet viewing is easier in the southern hemisphere due to the angle of the plane of the ecliptic, so those of us in the north have missed a few extremely bright comets in the past 25 years such as McNaught and Lovejoy.
There have been several promising comets in recent years, including the famous "fizzle" of Comet ISON in 2013 when it broke up just after perihelion, and the last bright comet visible in the northern hemisphere was Hale-Bopp in 1997; Neowise didn't get quite as bright as Hale-Bopp did, but it still outperformed most expectations and was visible for almost the entire month of July. See you in 6,700 years!
An aggregate quarry near River No. 2 beach on the Western Area Peninsula. A construction boom in the country and growing demand for building materials are leading to unregulated quarrying in the Western Area Peninsula. This mine backs onto the Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve, which has been nominated for Sierra Leone's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Status.

Hope is a small village located in the Hope Valley. The Midland Railway incorporated the valley as part of their Manchester and Sheffield via Chinley route. This involved the construction of long tunnels at each end to take advantage of the east west orientation of the valley. Cowburn Tunnel runs between Chinley and Edale, whilst in the east Dore and Totley Tunnel runs between Grindleford and Dore. Following the closure of the Great Central Railway Woodhead route from Manchester to Sheffield and the Midland Railway’s main line from Chinley to Matlock, the Hope Valley line has become a busy cross-country route with services from Liverpool to Norwich and Manchester Airport to Cleethorpes running non-stop between Stockport and Sheffield. There is an hourly stopping service from Manchester to Sheffield via Marple and New Mills that caters for hikers and cyclists at the weekends. During the week, the off peak service is reduced to two-hourly. The line is also an important freight route for cement and aggregate traffic from the Peak District. Trains run from Earles Sidings, servicing Earles cement factory about a mile to west of Hope Station. Freight trains also run from Tunstead and Hindlow on the freight-only spur line from Buxton to Chinley. Freight train crews use Hope as a changeover point.
Little remains of the original station at Hope except for the magnificently restored footbridge. Incompatible with modern disability friendly access policies it is an anachronism – These footbridges were produced as modular kits for the Midland Railway and were found widely over their network. The only other remaining original feature is a short stretch of the original platform – recognisable by its lower height.

Greenbrier-AstraRail of Romania manufactured a fleet of 116 new HOA bogie aggregate hoppers in 2016. The wagons were delivered to the UK by rail in several batches throughout 2016 and allocated the numbering sequence 7069570007 to 7069571153.
The first 53 wagons in the sequence, 7069570007 to 7069570528 were manufactured on behalf of leasing company Ermewa SA, for operation with Tarmac CRH, based in the former Lafarge quarry at Mountsorrel, Leicestershire.
Mountsorrel Quarry is a granite quarry operated by Tarmac and located between the villages of Mountsorrel and Quorn in the Charnwood district of Leicestershire. The quarry supplies granite to construction projects across Leicestershire, as well as the wider midlands and east of England. The quarry is important to the local economy and currently employs 149 people, 90 per cent of whom live within a 10 mile radius of the site.
The final 63 wagons in the sequence, 7069570528 to 7069571153, were manufactured for leasing company VTG Rail UK, for operation with Mendip Rail Ltd.

Marlstone aggregate concretion from the Pleistocene of Quebec, Canada. (public display, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA)
Concretions are post-depositional structures found in some sedimentary successions, particularly in shales. They vary in mineralogy, size, and shape, but often have slightly flattened spheroidal shapes. They typically form by post-depositional mineralization around some nucleus (a rock fragment or fossil fragment).
The Canadian specimen shown here formed by fusion of several smaller concretions - hence the term "aggregate concretion". The rock itself is marlstone, a mix of fine-grained calcareous and clay components ("lime-clay").
Samples from this site are remarkable for their unusual shapes, which promote pareidolia in human observers. Museum signage accompanying this specimen suggests a "girl with a bow in her hair".
Stratigraphy: near-latest Pleistocene (sensu traditio) lake deposit, ~11 ka
