MEDIVAC OFF RHYL.

The captain of the Aasli contacted the Holyhead Coastguard Co-ordinating centre to ask advice on a sick crew member on 22nd. August 2016. He was put in touch with a hospital doctor via a radio link. The doctor recommended the crewman should be evacuated to a hospital for further investigations, and the Rhyl's all-weather lifeboat was launched. Aasli was at anchor some 10 miles offshore, and the lifeboat was alongside nearly an hour later. The crewman was assisted on to the lifeboat and was cared for by two of the lifeboat's casualty care team. The crewman spoke very little English, and so hand signals and gestures were used to help overcome the language barrier. The man was given oxygen to assist his conditions and his condition continuously monitored. The lifeboat then returned at full speed back to Rhyl, and the man was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital by ambulance.

Since the demise of the classic view of the lock at Little Bedwyn behind a jungle of Amazonian proportions, this has become the view I most associate with the Berks and Hants. After decades of neglect, the once derelict Bridge 99 has now been restored by armed forces veterans, so should be around for many more years for photographers to enjoy

A couple of minutes before the bank of cloud put the lights out, 66047 is seen leading the 6M20 10:37 Whatley to St Pancras train of aggregate hoppers through Great Cheverell. The train is formed of HOA wagons carrying a mix of DB Schenker, EWS Construction and Cemex liveries. 25/02/16.

I thought it might be interesting to capture this once a week working of loaded aggregate from Neath Abbey Wharf to Pengam sidings (6B75) seen at Pengam Junction, Cardiff, headed by GBRf 66750. It is interesting to note that the line to Cardiff Tidal sidings, Celsa steel works and Cardiff docks has been reduced to a single track since I was last here though it does branch further along.

Aggregates liveried 66711 'Sense', heads north through Wellingborough whilst working 6F93, St Pancras Churchyard Castle Cement to Ketton Cement near Stamford. This location is currently in a business development area so unsure whether the shot will still be on as i upload May 2023

This snowflake is a number of firsts, it’s quite imperfect compared to others but it’s the earliest I’ve ever photographed a snowflake in the season, and it was done using a micro four thirds camera. Mistakes were made, and definitely learned from, when shooting this snowflake. Read on for the advantages of using a small sensor and the pitfalls to avoid!

This photo was made with a Lumix GX9 and a Canon MP-E 65mm F/2.8 1x-5x macro lens with a Metabones 0.64x adapter. This combination can yield wonderfully sharp results, but there’s a key ingredient here that I didn’t originally account for: diffraction.

One of the subtle benefits of a full-frame camera for macro work is that at extreme magnifications, you can avoid issues with light bending off course too far. From shooting with 20 megapixels on a full-frame camera (from the years spent with a 1DX mark II), I found the sweet spot for certain sizes of snowflakes to maximize detail. Using smaller apertures causes light to bend farther than desirable when passing though the aperture, effectively colouring outside the lines. While this image was taken at a 5x magnification at F/5, that’s the equivalent of just shy of F/45. The simple equation is to add one stop for every magnification factor you have.

20MP on the GX9 normally perfect, and I’ve used this camera for the past year of my professional shooting so the proof is there – but physics can be a bee with an itch sometimes. Tread carefully or you’ll get stung. Had I widened my aperture to F/2.8 as I normally would for even higher magnifications, I’d have even more detail in every focus slice. I’m walking you though this because it’s important to see my learning process – this image isn’t a failure, it’s a very important stepping stone towards better images during the next snowfall.

A pleasant surprise, however, was the number of frames required to make this image. Only 12. Twelve! Normally this would be a 30+ shot snowflake, and even with lightening my aperture up by a stop or two I’d have MUCH fewer frames required to get the snowflake completely in focus. SO long as diffraction can be kept at bay, I’m looking forward to using these cameras to make more magic.

Another point of failure here was the Canon MR-14EX II flash. Canon engineers decided to put a thermal limiter in the flash to prevent it from overheating, but they cut corners: they assume the temperature is relative to the aggregate flash output over time. They used a counter, not a thermal sensor. I’m outside in freezing temps and getting overheating warnings from my flash. Ugh. I also have the original MR-14EX that does NOT have this problem, and neither does the Yongnuo YN-14EX (Canon) or K&F Concept KF-150 (Nikon). Use these instead, and save some money in the process. I’ll be selling my MR-14EX II if there are any buyers interested!

Welcome to my world. Problem solving, experimenting, and stepping stones towards what will be even better images. It’s all part of the process, and I like to be transparent about how it all comes together. I hope that makes your own photographic journey with the subject even more fruitful! Yes, this isn’t the most beautiful snowflake, but it was perfect for the practice needed to learn. Never stop learning. :)

British Railways Southern Region Class 205 "Thumper" DEMU 1132 at Okehampton Station, Devon, on December 27, 2009. "Mince Pie Specials" were operating between Bow and Meldon Quarry. Whilst the Class 205s may not have operated on the former Southern Railway "Dartmoor Mainline" the units southern styling compliments the station and surroundings.

Following the ending of heritage operations following the insolvency of Iowa Pacific Holdings the "Thumper" has been offered for sale in 2021.

For more photographs of the Dartmoor Railway please click here: www.jhluxton.com/Railways-and-Tramways/Heritage-Railways-...

The Southern Railway's Dartmoor Mainline between Yeoford and Meldon following closure to passenger services in 1972 remained open for freight to Okehampton and Meldon Quarry. Eventually the line and quarry were sold to Aggregate Industries which leased the line first to Ealing Community Transport and later to Iowa Pacific Holdings. Heritage services were operated from the 1990s until 2019 along with a summer Sunday only service provided to Exeter Central by (First) Great Western Railway.

Iowa Pacific entered insolvency early in 2020.

In Spring 2021 the line was purchased by Network Rail with refurbishment having been going on since January with a review to reopening to full services by the end of the year as Okehampton once again rejoins the national rail network.

Thus whilst the heritage operation may be over with the rolling stock being offered for sale the line will once again see daily passenger services and there is a prospect of freight from Meldon Quarry resuming again.

Having just collected the token for the short haul to Machen quarry, DCR Class 60 No. 60055 accelerates away. This is the 6Z52 Oxford Banbury Road sidings – Machen quarry empty box wagons. The magnificent Park Junction signal box still survives for now and has seen increased traffic this year with the introduction of freight workings to Machen quarry operated by DCR and FL (only FL operating now), coupled with the Class 170 units to Ebbw Vale from Cardiff and the reintroduction of services from Cross Keys to Newport, the first in 60 years.
