Leadership fixes potholes, not patching.

Chronic neglect of Portland’s streets is manifesting in the burgeoning number and size of dangerously large potholes across the city. Here, pothole road damage is seen in Mount Tabor Park, Portland, Oregon.

Engineering: From a technical perspective, a great deal of information can be gleaned from a deep pothole, as it provides a cross-section-view of the pavement structural section…or lack thereof, as in this case. Here, the asphalt wearing surface is heavily pitted, highly oxidized and brittle, confirming many years of neglect. The asphalt layer is minimal, confirming this road never received the maintenance originally planned. The river-rounded pebbles of the base course layer tell the story of a roadway constructed originally from deficient materials. Roadway base course should be well-graded, faceted aggregate so as to provide optimum particle interlock – a crushed and sieved mix from those same pebbles would suffice. Finally, from the moisture visible in the pothole, and the shape of terrain at the road shoulders, it is clear that poor drainage has contributed to the failure of this road. The conclusion is unequivocal; this road has failed and no amount of patching will restore a level of service – or service life – that should be reasonably expected of it.

I sadly don't remember which of the several vendors with this sort of thing on show this came from, but this is one HELL of a FPGA board, that probably costs as much as my college education.

I think that this is a gorgeous detail to the building and probably my favourite part (even though it was cold out!!). As we can see from this shadow detail, Japanese architects design their buildings for those people who take the time to figure it out. This is a simple and clever way to bring another one of the four elements into his building without actually planting anything. The shadow also creates a simple outline of the tree without all of the value, details etc. It gets the message across in a simple, controlled manner which matches the rest of the Pulitzer perfectly.

The huge Tarmac operated limestone quarry at Ballidon in Derbyshire has created a huge scar on the landscape, for the industry enthused photographer though it makes for a great place to visit.

$40 per 75lb bag or $740 per ton - Mexican Beach pebbles are available in 75 pound bags in 1/2x1 inch, 1x2 inch, 2x3 inch, and 4x6 inch sizes. They are also sold loose by the pound. They are good for fish tanks, flower pots, landscape, and hot stone massage.

This is the Solite Quarry on the Virginia-North Carolina state line. The rocks quarried here are crushed into aggregate. Good fossils occur at this locality - the original finds were on the Virginia side of the border, while the best fossils are on the North Carolina side. The aggregate plant's physical address is in Virginia. Most of the active pit is in North Carolina.

The rocks here are tilted sedimentary rocks of the Cow Branch Formation (Upper Triassic). The unit is part of the Newark Supergroup, a thick, geographically-widespread stratigraphic unit in eastern America. It is Late Triassic to Early Jurassic in age and represents sediments and some lava flows that filled up old rift valleys roughly paralleling the modern-day Eastern Seaboard of America. The rift basins formed in the Triassic when the ancient Pangaea supercontinent attempted to break apart, but failed. A successful breakup of Pangaea occurred during the Jurassic. Most of the basin-filling rocks are terrestrial redbeds - hematite-rich siliciclastic sedimentary rocks, such as conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and shale, deposited in nonmarine environments.

Locality: aggregate plant at the Solite Quarry, east-northeast of town of Eden, Pittsylvania County & Rockingham County, southern Virginia & northern North Carolina, USA (36° 32’ 30.33” North latitude, 79° 40’ 09.17” West longitude)
