Many of the grass florets were still iced, but in places, where the sun had reached them, the ice crystals had thawed. This is Deschampsia cespitosa grass and it has elegant lolloping heads, accentuated when they are wet like this.

Old lava fields cover the area towards the southern end of Lanzarote, where the sea meets Timanfaya Park. The sun was sinking behind me, under a bank of clouds and offering some great light.

Mount Thomas with its red cap of sandstone lights up at sunrise above misty Sylvan Lake. The mosaic of burned and unburned forest shows up nicely here, a reflection of forest type (aspen versus conifer), winds during the blaze, and chance. The fire burned from late June to October in 2021, and was started by a lightning strike. Thankfully the summer rains have been plentiful and fires have been mostly absent in Colorado this summer, but we're not out of the woods yet ;-)
A storm with very high winds hit this local cemetery overnight, bringing down this large oak tree limb.
I took this last January 5th after an ice storm. We don't have ice on the trees now, but we do have snow ... and cold. Much cold.

The room is empty now. What remains: cinders still

Sadly, this is a familiar sight in numerous Northumberland woodland areas. The tree loss in Kielder Forest alone is estimated in the thousands and visitors have been urged to stay away as many more are in precarious positions.

Only in the last 24 hrs has the British national media really got to grips and properly reported the devastating effects of Storm Arwen down the North-East coast of Scotland and England, the areas that took the brunt of the winds and the power outages. Another example of the 'levelling-up' needed between south and north which has been much talked about for some while now?
This is the uppermost of 4 trees & a telegraph pole which were brought down blocking the Rugley Road at the top of the bank leading down to Rugley Ford..
