Wall Panel Relief of a Siege Scene, created under Neo-Assyrian ruler Ashurnasirpal II between 865–860 BC, excavated from the North West Palace at Nimrud, on display in Room G7 of the British Museum.
This gypsum wall panel depicts Ashurnasirpal II’s forces besieging a fortified city, with soldiers launching arrows from a multi-level siege engine resembling a wheeled tower. Archers fire from its upper platform while others below operate a battering ram aimed at breaching the city’s walls. Behind the tower, additional troops bring forward scaling ladders. The Assyrian king appears overseeing the action, and a cuneiform inscription affirms royal authority and divine favor. The imagery highlights the military innovation and propaganda of the Neo-Assyrian state. Excavated in 1846 by Sir Austen Henry Layard at the North West Palace of Nimrud, the panel was transported to England aboard HMS Meeanee in 1849.
The British Museum, located in Bloomsbury, London, was established in 1753 and opened in 1759 as the world’s first national public museum. Originally housed in Montagu House, it now occupies a grand neoclassical building designed by Sir Robert Smirke, constructed between 1823 and 1852 on the same site. The museum’s encyclopedic collection of over eight million objects spans over two million years of human history, with major highlights including the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon, and the Sutton Hoo treasures--many of which remain the subject of ongoing repatriation discussions.
