Using the camera in "Manual Exposure" seems scary for some. If so, this is for you ;-)
I have had several communications over the last week, asking for advise on how I do my shots and as soon as I mention I use manual exposure, it seems to strike terror into them. So I thought I would try and get the dial on my camera to move off the "M" setting :)
So this is a first for me, tabletop shot usng artificial light and the camera working out the exposure (thats scary for me)
As it happens, it's not far off what I would have chosen, so maybe it has some merits :)
I went for Aperture Priority (AV on Canon) as I thought that would best suit my style of shooting. Set the aperture to f16 and ISO 200 as I would if working manually and hit the button. Not bad I think you will agree, very slightly over exposed for my tastes, but only by about 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop, which could easily be catered for using exposure compensation.
So if anybody thought they couldnt do this kind of thing as they dont understand exposure, that excuse no longer applies ;-)
Similar setup to yesterday, but with a couple of refinements shown below.

Lion
The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the family Felidae; it is a muscular, deep-chested cat with a short, rounded head, a reduced neck and round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. The lion is sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females with a typical weight range of 150 to 250 kg (330 to 550 lb) for the former and 120 to 182 kg (265 to 400 lb) for the latter. Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognisable feature of the species. A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The species is an apex and keystone predator, although they scavenge when opportunities occur. Some lions have been known to hunt humans, although the species typically does not.
Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats, but when persecuted it adapts to being active at night and at twilight. In the Pleistocene, the lion ranged throughout Eurasia, Africa and the Americas from the Yukon to Peru but today it has been reduced to fragmented populations in Sub-Saharan Africa and one critically endangered population in western India

Madikwe Game Reserve
The Madikwe Game Reserve is a protected area in South Africa, part of the latest park developments in the country. Named after the Madikwe or Marico River, on whose basin it is located, it was opened in 1991 and comprises 750 km2 of bushland north of the small town Groot-Marico up to the Botswana border.
Madikwe Game Reserve lies 90 km north of Zeerust on what used to be farm land, but owing to the poor soil type, farming was not that successful. After extensive research, the South African Government found that this land would best be utilised as a provincial park, to economically uplift this otherwise rather poor area.
The process reintroducing wildlife to the area began in 1992 under the codename Operation Phoenix which relocated entire breeding herds of elephants, Cape buffaloes, south-central black rhinos and southern white rhinos along with various species of antelopes. Following Operation Phoenix, Madikwe has also successfully reintroduce rarer predatory species such as lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and Cape wild dogs bringing the total large mammal population of the reserve to over 10 000. There are currently more than 60 species of mammal in the park.

Reserva do Madikwe

RUN AWAY!
While at the Shady Fox Tavern a while back, a few BCC warriors overheard a story about a city lost to the sands. The man spoke of treasures, magical weapons, and the fact that the desert would never allow anyone to leave with them alive.
The men decided that this journey was worth the risk and set out into the desert along the road to nowhere. After days of following the road, they happened across some ruins, the first sign of life in some time. They searched for the treasure but found none.
What they did find was an unguarded nest of Giant Gray Hawk eggs. Then, who had not eaten in more than two days, decided to make a feast of the eggs and began collecting them. When out of the sky came a horrible scream, and the Giant Hawks decended on the men.
While running for their lives, they understood the warning of the tale they heard!
This was a really fun build. The hawks are inspired by the new creator set that will come out next year.
Enjoy!

The Zelve Monastery is a Byzantine-era monastery that was carved into the rock in pre-iconoclastic times. It is part of the Zelve Open Air Museum, located between Ürgüp and Avanos.[1]
Remains
The remains of the Zelve monastery complex are located on the northern slopes of Aktepe, 1 km from Paşa Bağlari and 10 km out from Göreme on the Avanos road. Zelve does not have the rich frescoes of Göreme and other Cappadocian locations. Zelve is spread out over three valleys, of which two are connected by a tunnel. The complex contains innumerable rooms and passages which also house many pointed fairy chimneys with large stems, at about 40 feet above the valley floor.
The valley was a monastic retreat between the 9th and 13th centuries.[1] Christians moved to Zelve during the Persian and Arab invasions.[citation needed] The site was inhabited until 1952 when villagers were relocated to nearby Aktepe due to safety concerns.[1]
Cappadocia's first seminaries to train priests are located here at the monastery. Dating back to the early years of monastery life in Zelve is the Direkli Church (with the famed columns). Direkli is located at the bottom of the slope. The main decorations are iconoclastic-doctrine high relief crosses. The valley also contains the Balikli Kilise (Fish), Üzümlü Kilise (Grapes) churches and the now totally collapsed Geyikli Kilise (Deer church). These churches date to the pre-iconoclastic period.
The area was inhabited until 1952, when the last inhabitants moved to the new town Yeni Zelve ("New Zelve"), 2 km away. In 1967, Zelve was turned into an open-air museum.
The area also contains houses, a tunnel joining two of the valleys, a mill (without sails), and a small mosque. Several dovecotes are found in the valley.

CAPPADOCIA WORLD HERITAGE LIST :
whc.unesco.org/en/list/357
In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns – the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century – can also be seen there.
Brief synthesis
Located on the central Anatolia plateau within a volcanic landscape sculpted by erosion to form a succession of mountain ridges, valleys and pinnacles known as “fairy chimneys” or hoodoos, Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia cover the region between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos, the sites of Karain, Karlık, Yeşilöz, Soğanlı and the subterranean cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu. The area is bounded on the south and east by ranges of extinct volcanoes with Erciyes Dağ (3916 m) at one end and Hasan Dağ (3253 m) at the other. The density of its rock-hewn cells, churches, troglodyte villages and subterranean cities within the rock formations make it one of the world's most striking and largest cave-dwelling complexes. Though interesting from a geological and ethnological point of view, the incomparable beauty of the decor of the Christian sanctuaries makes Cappadocia one of the leading examples of the post-iconoclastic Byzantine art period.
It is believed that the first signs of monastic activity in Cappadocia date back to the 4th century at which time small anchorite communities, acting on the teachings of Basileios the Great, Bishop of Kayseri, began inhabiting cells hewn in the rock. In later periods, in order to resist Arab invasions, they began banding together into troglodyte villages or subterranean towns such as Kaymakli or Derinkuyu which served as places of refuge.
Cappadocian monasticism was already well established in the iconoclastic period (725-842) as illustrated by the decoration of many sanctuaries which kept a strict minimum of symbols (most often sculpted or tempera painted crosses). However, after 842 many rupestral churches were dug in Cappadocia and richly decorated with brightly coloured figurative painting. Those in the Göreme Valley include Tokalı Kilise and El Nazar Kilise (10th century), St. Barbara Kilise and Saklı Kilise (11th century) and Elmalı Kilise and Karanlık Kilise (end of the 12th – beginning of the 13th century).
Criterion (i): Owing to their quality and density, the rupestral sanctuaries of Cappadocia constitute a unique artistic achievement offering irreplaceable testimony to the post-iconoclastic Byzantine art period.
Criterion (iii): The rupestral dwellings, villages, convents and churches retain the fossilized image of a province of the Byzantine Empire between the 4th century and the arrival of the Seljuk Turks (1071). Thus, they are the essential vestiges of a civilization which has disappeared.
Criterion (v): Cappadocia is an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement which has become vulnerable under the combined effects of natural erosion and, more recently, tourism.
Criterion (vii): In a spectacular landscape dramatically demonstrating erosional forces, the Göreme Valley and its surroundings provide a globally renowned and accessible display of hoodoo landforms and other erosional features, which are of great beauty, and which interact with the cultural elements of the landscape.
Integrity
Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, having been extensively used and modified by man for centuries, is a landscape of harmony combining human interaction and settlement with dramatic natural landforms. There has been some earthquake damage to some of the cones and the pillars, but this is seen as a naturally occurring phenomenon. Overuse by tourists and some vandalism have been reported and some incompatible structures have been introduced.
The erosional processes that formed the distinctive conical rock structures will continue to create new fairy chimneys and rock pillars, however due to the rate of this process, the natural values of the property may still be threatened by unsustainable use. The cultural features, including rock-hewn churches and related cultural structures, mainly at risk of being undermined by erosion and other negative natural processes coupled with mass tourism and development pressures, can never be replaced. threats Some of the churches mentioned by early scholars such as C. Texier, H.G. Rott and Guillaume de Jerphanion are no longer extant.
Authenticity
The property meets the conditions of authenticity as its values and their attributes, including its historical setting, form, design, material and workmanship adequately reflect the cultural and natural values recognized in the inscription criteria.
Given the technical difficulties of building in this region, where it is a matter of hewing out structures within the natural rock, creating architecture by the removal of material rather than by putting it together to form the elements of a building, the underlying morphological structure and the difficulties inherent in the handling of the material inhibited the creative impulses of the builders. This conditioning of human effort by natural conditions persisted almost unchanged through successive periods and civilizations, influencing the cultural attitudes and technical skills of each succeeding generation.
Protection and management requirements
The World Heritage property Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia is subject to legal protection in accordance with both the Protection of Cultural and Natural Resources Act No. 2863 and the National Parks Act No. 2873. The entire territory between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos is designated as a National Park under the Act No. 2873. In addition, natural, archaeological, urban, and mixed archaeological and natural conservation areas, two underground towns, five troglodyte villages, and more than 200 individual rock-hewn churches, some of which contain numerous frescoes, have been entered into the register of immovable monuments and sites according to the Act No. 2863.
Legal protection, management and monitoring of the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia fall within the scope of national and regional governmental administrations. The Nevşehir and Kayseri Regional Conservation Councils are responsible for keeping the register of monuments and sites, including carrying out all tasks related to the legal protection of monuments and listed buildings and the approval to carry out any restoration-related works. They also evaluate regional and conservation area plans prepared by the responsible national and/or local (i.e. municipal) authorities.
Studies for revision and updating of the existing land use and conservation plan (Göreme National Park Long-term Development Plan) of 1981 were completed in 2003. The major planning decisions proposed were that natural conservation areas are to be protected as they were declared in 1976. Minor adjustments in the peripheral areas of settlements and spatial developments of towns located in the natural conservation sites including Göreme, Ortahisar, Çavuşin, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa will be strictly controlled. In other words, the Plan proposes to confine the physical growth of these towns to recently established zones. Hotel developments will take into account the set limits for room capacities. Furthermore, the plan also suggested that local authorities should be advised to review land use decisions for areas that have been reserved for tourism developments in the town plans.
Preparation of conservation area plans for the urban and/or mixed urban-archaeological conservation sites within the historic sections of Göreme are in place and provide zoning criteria and the rules and guidelines to be used in the maintenance and restoration of listed buildings and other buildings which are not registered, but which are located within the historic zones. Similar planning studies for the towns of Ortahisar and Uçhisar are in place. Once finalised, a conservation area plan for the urban conservation area in Ürgüp will be in place. All relevant plans are kept up to date on a continuing basis.
Appropriate facilities aimed at improving the understanding of the World Heritage property have been completed for the subterranean towns of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, and are required for Göreme and Paşabağı.
Monuments in danger due to erosion, including the El Nazar, Elmalı, and Meryemana (Virgin Mary) churches, have been listed as monuments requiring priority action. Specific measures for their protection, restoration and maintenance are required at the site level.
While conservation plans and protection measures are in place for individual sites, it is recognised by the principal parties responsible for site management that an integrated Regional Plan for the Cappadocia Cultural and Tourism Conservation and Development Area is required to protect the World Heritage values of the property. Adequate financial, political and technical support is also required to secure the management of the property.

When I first saw this a few years ago I was advised that it was not an art installation and that it was in fact part of an expensive ventilation system. As I liked these dark blocks I began to believe that it was a modern sculpture and then one day I saw a notice nearby indicating that it was “8 Limestones” by Ulrich Rückriem.
Ulrich Rückriem completed an apprenticeship as a stone mason in Düren from 1957 to 1959 and spent the following two years working as journeyman for the stonemason's lodge at Cologne cathedral. During these years he also spent two semesters studying at the Cologne Werkschulen under Ludwig Gies. Rückriem travelled extensively through southern Europe, Morocco and Tunisia in 1962. After his return he decided to become a sculptor and settled in Nörvenich near Düren in 1963. He had his first one-man exhibition one year later at the Leopold-Hoesch Museum in Düren.
Rückriem developed his own working method in 1968. The working material and the working process are made the subject of the work by duplicating, splitting, reducing and slightly changing the original material. The sculptor moved to Mönchengladbach in 1969, where he shared a studio with Blinky Palermo in an old factory. His first exhibition with the new stone sculptures took place in the same year at the Galerie Konrad Fischer in Düsseldorf.
Rückriem's work was much praised in the following years with important exhibitions, such as at the Haus Lange in Krefeld in 1970. Rückriem exhibited works at the documenta 5, 7, 8 and 9 in Kassel between 1972 and 1992. He was a professor of sculpture at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg from 1974 to 1984. Rückriem expanded his range of working materials at the end of the 1970s and began experimenting with granite, dolomite, wood and iron. He exhibited four split dolomites at the biennal in Venice in 1978. Ulrich Rückriem became professor of sculpture at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf in 1984 and then at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt am Main in 1988. Today, the artist lives in Ireland. His self-reflective works in stone, iron and wood are an important contribution to process art.

News obtained from the Northwest Herald: McHENRY – A structure fire at the Polish Legion of American Veterans on 1304 Park St. in McHenry took roughly two and a half hours to extinguish Sunday afternoon, but no one was injured during the annual Mother's Day brunch.
McHenry Township Fire Battalion Chief Joe Krueger said firefighters received a call at 11:41 a.m. for the fire, which was called in while members of the post were cooking for a Mother's Day brunch. Krueger said a Level 3 MABAS box alert was called, bringing assistance from multiple departments in Lake and McHenry counties.
With heavy smoke coming through the roof, McHenry Township Fire Chief Tony Huemann said the first wave of firefighters made an aggressive move and ran hoses inside the building before Krueger deemed the situation too dangerous and pulled out the firefighters. Responders then fought the blaze defensively from the outside of the building, Huemann said.
No civilians or firefighters were injured and the fire was contained to the single building. Some emergency crews began to leave the scene at 3 p.m. The building has "substantial" damage, Krueger said, with most of the back and back roof completely destroyed.
Dan Lisi, first vice commander of Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 188, said he and other members were cooking a Mother's Day brunch at the same time a roofing company was doing work on the building when a breaker popped around 11:30 a.m.
Other breakers started popping and the fire started, Lisi said. He said 70 people were inside the hall, and everybody exited safely and without injury.
Krueger said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Representatives from the roofing company on scene declined to comment.
Lisi said the post has 144 members and has been in the building since 1980.

[20:08] Shadowkat Wrigglesworth heard Beth and then leaned back upon the desk as her mind went back to Bernard, the one whose flesh she wanted to taste, or smell. "Well...he's probably busy." She stated to her as she took a look around the lab once more. "And I can't see him doing anything wrong...He's just probably busy."
[20:11] beth Latynina nods slightly as he does tend to focus to things when working or busy, but five days is long time not to have heard from him and no matter what she is still worried," just not like him at all..." before stopping thinking it her problem
[20:13] Shadowkat Wrigglesworth looks up towards the ceiling, she wasn't the best to ask for relationships. Her two most 'normal' relationships was Strozzi who shot her once a week, and Forge who...well...it was Forge. "Just give him a few days." Was all that she stated, "Atlease he didn't shoot you." Forge was the reason why Chi forced Kat to wear a vest. "I'm sure he's just dealing with business matter."
[20:15] Shadowkat Wrigglesworth: "Plus...that seems normal with guys...."
[20:17] beth Latynina offers up an weak smile as hand lays to her belly thinking with her historty men just up and leave without an word, never to be seen again," yes will give him an few more days" then plan on stabbing him when he does show up
[20:22] Shadowkat Wrigglesworth notices Beth's hand upon her stomach and slowly slips off of the table, moving over towars Beth and sniffs the air around. She got close enough that she'd smell her skin. "How long..." She moved back to the table and leaned back against the table. "And it's probably just you getting worried..."
[20:25] beth Latynina watches as Kat moves closer an sniffs her stratled as she can tell she is pregnant just by smelling, " almost three months" before just sighing once more" yes I know but can not help it"
[20:29] Shadowkat Wrigglesworth shrugs her shoulders. "That's normal, I guess." She gave a shrug of her shoulders as she listens to the noises around her and chewed upon her lower lip. "But..then again, what do I know use to married to a guy that I hate, and the other two I dated...the catwalkers killed one, and the other just vanished."
[20:32] beth Latynina nods," well never thought any man would stick around to want to marry me or make plans, I meen real plans for the future with me, most just keep me long enough to enjoy the fuck before moving on, which is why is so strange no word from Stephan" stopping as knows she is just going to make herself sick
[20:34] Shadowkat Wrigglesworth watched Beth as she chewed upon her lower lip. "People are strange...and hey, look at me and Forge...we still haven't signed the divorce papers because we're to stubborn to talk to each other...and when we do talk, we end up fighting." She shrugs, "By my standers you're doing like a 100% better."
.
.
[20:38] beth Latynina offers an little smile," well that might be true and am sorry for going on had just been home along in the appartment for last four days waiting to hear from him" tilting head to look at you," so do you really want to divorce him?"
.
[20:43] Shadowkat Wrigglesworth tilts her head to the side. "Well...if you want, you can stay at my place for a little bit." She shrugs her shoulders lightly towards her. "Plus, I've been taken care of some business so I'm up most of the night." She smiled lightly to her, when she heard the last question. She'd tuck her necklace within her hoody which if Beth looked quick enough she'd notice that it had the wedding ring along the chain. "Who knows, right now we aint good..."
[20:47] beth Latynina catches sight of the shinnie as she can spot one anywhere not commenting on it as figures that is Kats business, just smiles to the offer to stay at her place thinking that would be nice as our place is just so quiet and lonely, also knowing Kat might not come over if asked her," thanks Kat might take you up on that offer"

'An Ill Advised Journey'
With a loud *SNAP*, the board fell away underneath Arrow-gone, and with a shriek of despair, he tumbled down into the quick-flowing river beneath. Leg-o-lamb softly muttered to his companion, Gimmie, "Maybe we were too trusting of Sore-man when he sadi he knew a shortcut into More-Doors..." Gimmie just chuckled, "He squealed like a girl! Harharhar!"

Saguaro National Park, Arizona.
Hiking in the sand isn't much fun for me, even in the desert. Luckily it's only a minor inconvenience here, probably caused by many years of horses traveling on this narrow section. Hiking in a wash is much harder and can actually be tiring.
I don't often hike these trails in Saguaro that stick to the desert floor, as I prefer some elevation change for views as well as exercise. However, they do offer many possibilities, as the sign at this trail junction indicates. Having a map here certainly is advised.

News Article obtained from the Northwest Herald:
CRYSTAL LAKE – The residents of five apartments were displaced following a fire Monday afternoon at a condominium complex, officials said. The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded at 1:22 p.m. to an activated fire alarm at 1623 Carlemont Drive, a two-story building that houses four units and is connected to a second four-unit building, according to a news release.
Flames reaching 20 to 25 feet were coming out of the second floor of the building, said Jim Rainbolt, president of the Randall Village Condominium Association.
He had arrived about five minutes after the alarm had gone off, he said, adding that the fire developed pretty quickly.
Randall Village is made up of 21 residential buildings, each housing six to eight apartments, Rainbolt said.
The fire department was able to bring the fire under control in 45 minutes and prevent it from spreading to other buildings, the release said.
The fire damage was mostly contained to the unit where the fire started and the roof that covers that unit, Battalion Chief William Whyte said. There was water and smoke damage to the other units.
The residents of all four units in 1623 Carlemont Drive and of one unit in adjoined 1627 Carlemont Drive have been displaced, Rainbolt said.
