Have a Happy Slider Sunday :). Explored

Empty store shelves, long gas lines or stations sold out of gas... must be hurricane season around here.

I suppose we could trade in our cars for surf boards with coastal waves expected 20'-36' ( ... and for a really adventurous boat-ride : up to 51-ft waves in the jet stream...)

Anyway, hope everyone has a happy (or hoppy) day !

Luosto is a picturesque ski village with a surprisingly large number of accommodations. Although there are a few hotels, you'll mostly find cozy bungalows here. Luosto is nestled in the heart of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, surrounded by ancient forests, rugged gorges, and peat bogs. It's a unique piece of nature rarely seen in our part of Europe. Finnish Lapland is far to the north, so there's usually plenty of snow here. Luosto offers a stunning landscape for adventurous activities and the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Finnish wilderness. Our plan is to climb the spectacular fell (mountain). As we step out of the car, it feels like nature here is in a deep winter sleep. Our hike begins at dawn in the remote hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien. In Lapland, the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset can be very intense due to the low position of the sun on the horizon. The long twilight periods can create unique colors in the sky, including green hues, due to various scattering effects of sunlight. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow.

We walk along the ridge of the fells of Ukko-Luosto, passing through the surrounding primeval forest. The summer path to the top is closed due to avalanche danger, so we continue our journey and attempt to reach the summit via the northern ridge of Ukko-Luosto. The path ascends steeply through the enchanting ancient forests, where the trees covered in crown snow look magical. The last section to the top of the mountain has snow too deep for us. The path winds its way to the top of Pikku-Luosto Fell. We sink in and have to crawl to the top. Snowshoes are definitely necessary here. In the impressive Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut, we can take a break, warm up, and admire the magnificent view. It's terribly cold up here on the 514-meter-high mountain, partly due to the biting polar wind. The sun reaches its highest point on this short January day and shines beautifully just over the mountain's peak. There's also a solar halo visible, an optical phenomenon caused by the refraction, reflection, and scattering of light by ice crystals in the atmosphere. We thaw out a bit and rest before starting our return journey. Walking in the snow is exhausting. We take the same route back because we don't want to get stuck in deep snow and aim to be back in Luosto before dark. In total, we walked more than 18,000 steps, but we enjoyed this special place in Lapland. In Luosto, we treated ourselves to delicious reindeer jerky and panna cotta, while BieJee savored a reindeer burger.

She is like a ship floating in the middle of the sea.

On a good day, she wants to keep sailing to see new destinations, whether they be beautiful, challenging, or terrible.

On stormy and cold days, she longs to return to the warmth and safety of the harbor.

There are many piers to dock at, both completed and incomplete. But, no matter where or how long she parks, in the end, she has to leave the pier.

Even the port, the safest place for ships, is not meant for her to stay stationary and safe. In the end, the ship must carry out the duties for which it was built and predetermined.

Being a Domina for her is like carrying the dreams of passengers, managing them, taking them on a journey, creating memories, and sharing good experiences together until they reach their safe destination. Once the mission is perfectly complete, it's time to part ways.

Vietnam 2004

In 2004 I went backpacking. Last year - with all the lockdowns - I dug out my photographs and processed them. It was wonderful reliving all those experiences so long ago.

This photograph was taken in Hoi An, Vietnam on the Thu Bon River. I was in my mid-20s and still carefree, and being quite adventurous back then, I bought a very old Russian Minsk Motorcycle in Hanoi. It was a two stroke, noisy, dirty, dangerous, but exhilarating machine. I have no idea how I stayed alive! I rode it from Hanoi to Saigon down Highway 1 and up onto the Ho Chi Minh Road.

On the way I stopped in Hoi An, a tourist town even back in those days, but with wonderful traditional architecture. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and the place to buy some of the best tailored suits - not that I was interested in a suit back then. Rather than getting measured up, I took a canoe 'tour' with a local lady in her traditional boat down the Thu Bon River.

I wasn't that long down the river when everything changed and I could have been there 100 years ago looking back on a traditional Vietnamese Port. The bustle and bartering was fabulous and I feel I caught some of the atmosphere of Vietnam with this photo.

I loved Hoi An and plan to return one day, but I expect it to be very different from what remember it all those years ago.

Enjoy!

...the notorious pirate.

Just a rushed build to get started.

It was a hard climb up rocks to the ledge to take this shot of the Treasury. The ruins are approached from the east by a narrow gorge known as the Siq - While most walked the distance like us (I think about 4 km) others took more adventurous means of transport (burrows, horses, and camels)

Vernazza Sunset.

Cinque Terre, Liguria in the northern part of Italy. The national park includes the five towns Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. There are a lot of hiking trails in the park featuring spectacular views of the landscape and the towns.

The accessibility to fantastic photo locations of the towns are nothing but unique. In Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore it is just a 5 minutes stroll to a breathtaking view of both water, town and - if the time is right - sunset.

The 5 towns are connected by hiking trails running along the coastline (Via dell Amore - 8€ daily fee to use them) but due to a flooding in 2011 only the part between Monterosso and Vernazza is open (2015). Luckily, there are many trails inland that are open and free to use. For the less adventurous types the towns are also connected by train (running hourly) and ferry (except Corniglia) if the weather permits it. The towns look amazing from sea so going at least once by ferry is highly recommended.

It becomes very hot and very crowded during the summer so my best advice are to visit during the shoulder in spring/fall. We were there in the beginning of April and hiked in short sleeves and shorts. 2 out of 3 hiking days were great but the last we had rain pouring from early morning until late afternoon.

Accommodations book up quickly in Cinque Terre but gives you a bit more flexibility not having to catch the train going home in the evening. The towns north of Cinque Terre are charming and a good alternative to staying in the park.

And by the way: The local wine isn't bad either :)

I was never thinking that the seascape shooting can be so adventurous like this morning. I went with Michael to Shelly Beach-Manly to take some shots but I must have misunderstood his email. Seriously, when he told me that this was going to be an adventure, he was right!!

We decided that instead of walking for half an hour to our destination we would take the shortcut via a steep road down to the cliff in pitch black darkness (5.30 am). Well Michael had a flash light and I forgot mine at home, bottom line – we finally reached our destination with some additional scars, bruises and scratches on my legs and feet. I had slipped a couple of times and fell despite my Spiderman powers and my new wet shoes!!

We met Oat ( Hangingpixels) and few more photographers; good thing is to see how many people enjoy photography, sunrise and seascape shooting.

For adventurous visitors, Moscow has a really unique museum – the Secret Soviet Bunker 42, also known as the Cold War Museum Moscow. A neoclassical building on a quiet street in the centre of the city, this nondescript building looks very ordinary. The building was just a shell and served as an entry to a 7,000 sq-meter space – one of the main secret sites of the USSR. An underground complex was built here in the 1950s in response to the threat of nuclear war. Now it is a museum, and a unique one at that.

Visitors descend by elevator to the depth of 18 floors (65 meters) beneath Moscow. The facility operated as an emergency Command Post Headquarters for long-range aviation communications. Bunker 42 was fully equipped with everything needed for a nuclear attack: air recycling system, diesel generators, stocks of food, fuel, artesian wells to provide clean drinking water. Up to 30,000 people could live and work there for 90 days without assistance from the outside world.

Do you feel adventurous today? Cause here's something to challenge your minds! Just a little. Last night while I was editing this photo, I let my mind go stray for a while, somehow lost myself in the picture and when I "got back", I had a couple of questions... They are mostly thinking out loud kind of questions, rather than really asking. But please, play along and bear with me for a moment or two... You can even think I got crazy overnight and it's ok. It's not like I'm the model of sanity after all! So here goes...

We are used to hear expressions like "Great Point of View" or "Depth of Field", referring to a photograph, especially in here. Usually meaning the photo they refer to, has some unconventional point of view that challenges our eyes, or a bokeh effect that we really like. They are compliments mostly, or used as such. But it has to do with something else too. Something deeper and more important. And that's Perception. That's something I'd like to touch base with, this time. It's intriguing and cunning, yet it can get confusingly fun!

So, Perception! It's is not something tangible, it's not something we can measure. it's not something we can see or hear, nor can we hold it in our hand. And not everyone's Perception is to the same degree as someone else's. Doesn't matter though. We don't need to measure it. We don't need to see it, or hear it, or feel it in our hand. In essence it's an idea. It's our idea of reality. In that respect, Perception is to Understanding what breathing is to us as humans. We need it to live in and feel the world and people around us. We need it in order to be able to understand and translate feelings and emotions, behaviors and reactions. We need it to help us grasp the bigger picture. We need it as a base to get ideas from and form thoughts, our own thoughts. Cause we are thinking based on our perceptions. Ultimately we use it to understand ourselves! And what we think we are is not always what we really are. In other words, Perception is a key element of our existence and from that point of view (pun intended ;-), Perception becomes one of the most fundamental aspects of ourselves.

Have you ever wondered if what we see is real, but what we perceive this reality to be, is not? Strange thought!

What of how we perceive time? What if the Future is Now and present was the moment that just passed? And if that's so, then Now is the Future happening and it is Past at the same time? In short Now is eternal? So confusing really!

What if we are not the child of the universe, like Barclay James Harvest tried to tell us back in the days, but the universe itself? Trying to think out of the box here!

How about ourselves? Are you really who you perceive yourself to be? Are you really what you think you are? That's tricky. Isn't it?

What if we are already living the dream but thought we were still dreaming? An idea to play with...

In other words, to put it simply, how much reality, our perception allows us to comprehend in the end of the day?

How much understanding of the world, of what's happening around us and ultimately of ourselves, does our perception allow us to have?

Now, take your time. Think about it for a moment... or a lifetime! All the same... or not?!

A rather adventurous drive (I left the car on the way and hiked the remaining 2km) brought me tonthat small Chapel on top of a mountain sitting in the clouds. The fog was so dense that I nearly walked by it without noticing.

Tarryall, CO - It was one of those, "hey, let's turn right and see where this road goes" kind of moments. We inadvertently found a pretty nice campground called Spruce Grove.

There are some hiking trails just north of the area I would like to venture through. On this day I was ill prepared for any significant hike, the lack of proper shoes and apparel kept me from being too adventurous. Besides it's really crazy how the weather was; you could go from baking in the sun to freezer burn and back to sizzling hot in a matter of minutes.

The 5th and 6th classes in Ballerup were invited to experience different "escape rooms" at the School Service in Pederstrup. Here they could meet witches, princesses and other fairy-tale characters. If they could solve the riddles, they would get something that could eventually help Pinnochio get rid of the long nose he was so angry about. Morse codes, logic, UV lamps and observation skills were tested. As usual, the School Service got a lot of pictures in colour, but I think a couple of them did well in black and white.

A group of adventurous ELCC Marauders traveled by the Rail Runner commuter train from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, the New Mexico state capital today… every Wednesday, seniors ride the Rail Runner free… not that this means anything to us as we are all between 25-35 years old! However, as we disembarked the Rail Runner at Santa Fe Depot, I noticed a very old newspaper under a station chair… I picked it up and stuffed it in my backpack as we were leaving quickly to go shoot some of the oldest churches in the United States today and then enjoy some New Mexican food at Tomasita’s restaurant. I know it was wrong but I couldn’t help myself! Anyway, the newspaper was the “Santa Fe New Mexican,” dated June 15, 1955 and the lead story on the cover page had a headline, “New Albuquerque Camera Club Visits Santa Fe.” Here is the image from that article!

Kalk Bay Harbour is a charming brightly coloured fishing harbour in the heart of the equally quaint town of Kalk Bay. Experienced local anglers take to the fishing waters with line, net and determination and return daily around lunchtime with a fresh catch for you to buy at cheerful prices. If you can't catch your dinner you may as well choose it and have it beheaded, scaled, de-gutted and filleted by a quirky expert (do your bartering before anyone picks up a knife). Take it home and try it simple and delicious on a rustic braai (barbecue), South African style with a local beer or wine. If you're feeling adventurous pick up a local recipe book and try a traditional potato salad side.

This is the first time I've used my Lensbaby Sol 45 for a flat lay, more often than not I use the V56 but decided to be a bit adventurous. This won't be everybody's cup of tea but I love the blur so I may well be using the Sol again.

Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. For adventure seekers, it's possible to continue the hike to the nearby Gergeti Glacier, making the journey a full-day excursion.

The hike to Toti Waterfall leads through a rugged mountain landscape with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys. The trail winds along steep slopes and rocky paths, surrounded by dry grasslands and scattered shrubs. Along the way, impressive cliffs and natural formations add a unique character to the scenery. The fresh mountain air and the tranquility of nature make the journey an unforgettable experience. At the end, the spectacular Toti Waterfall awaits as a rewarding sight after the challenging climb.

Knackerd! lockdown fitness and lack there of is a real issue!

This whole row of buildings is abandoned. I have heard that there is a bowling ally, community center, and movie theater in this area--all empty now.

Home of the Adventurous is probably the perfect slogan for this place. When I begin to write something down about this place I honestly don't know where to begin. So I guess I should start by saying that almost everything you will be seeing in these photos is abandoned. This is a former cold war air force base that was basically left to rot by the government after less than 10 years of use. There are a few families that live in the condos still, but I would say 90 or more percent of these homes are empty. The schools are decaying, as is the hospital and all other buildings except those owned by Boeing. Boeing owns the runway and uses it for test purposes. And instead of moving their employees into the empty condos they set up manufactured homes for them.

The weather in Saint Marie is especially brutal, terribly hot dry summers and fierce awful winters. Saint Marie is like an island of condos and abandoned buildings in a great sea of prairie--nothing else is around it for miles and miles. It is true desolation. And when you drive the broken streets and see the condos with those big windows looking at you like empty eyes it is like you are in another world entirely. Then you see the signs set up by Boeing saying not to go any further and that essentially they are watching you--it's like something from a movie. I encourage you to look up other people's photos of Saint Marie and the things you will see will haunt you. Operating tables and beds left up in the hospital. Robes left hanging in the church. Everyone just walked away one day and this is what remains. If you are especially adventurous you can move here--the condos are a steal. A beautiful one fully furnished just sold for 30,000 dollars and there are others for much less than that.

Here are videos I took while exploring Saint Marie:

For the record: this is the "staff-only" staircase of the Museum of Etnology in Budapest. I've been there on a training during the closing hours and I fell behind to take this shot -- it was quite adventurous, for the guard spotted me on the other floor while I was balancing on the bar to get the composition -- I've been asked what I'm doing there with a camera in my hands... It wasn't that usual "nice" situation.

Update: this shot has just appeared in the Budapest Daily Photo blog -- many thanks to Zsoolt.

“A Mere Blessing”

Petersburg, Michigan

The sixth and final submission to the 50 States Project, this time for “The American Dream.”

The people of Michigan have long held a strong desire for travel, exploration, and just “getting away.” Just about every family I knew growing up went “up north” a few times every year, went on long family trips around the country, or had a modest lake house somewhere on America's third coast.

Multiple generations of middle class security helped give many people the chance to go on long vacations. For the more adventurous, RV's were the next logical step in the wanderlust pursuit. Combine the desire for expanded boundaries with the mechanically proficient populace of the state, and you start to see why many of the campers-on-wheels across the country are sporting Michigan license plates.

This is a popular spot for rock-climbing, a warm day brings the adventurous climbers out.

Long Canyon

The Burr Trail takes the adventurous traveler into some of Utah's most beautiful and extraordinary country. Views of the Henry Mountains, the colorfully contorted Waterpocket Fold, red Circle Cliffs, and Long Canyon all await the traveler who wishes to drive this interesting back road. Numerous hikes and side trips are available for those with the time and inclination.

John Atlantic Burr was born in 1846 aboard the SS Brooklyn somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. He and his family lived in Salt Lake City, then later moved south and established the town of Burrville, Utah, in 1876. John Burr soon developed a trail to move cattle back and forth between winter and summer ranges and to market. This cattle trail through the rough, nearly impassable country around the Waterpocket Fold, Burr Canyon, and Muley Twist Canyon came to be known as the Burr Trail.

Today, the road which connects Bullfrog and Boulder, Utah, and which passes through the painted rock country of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Capitol Reef National Park, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument land is known as the Burr Trail.

(nps.gov)

Der Burr Trail – mit vollem Namen Burr Trail Scenic Backway – ist eine historische Überlandverbindung im Garfield County im Bundesstaat Utah.

Verlauf

I spotted this little guy on the birdfeeder yesterday for the first time. I was amazed when it leapt from the feeder to the bush and was annoyed with myself for stopping the camera moments before so failed to get the jump. Two of us were watching the mouse and neither of us caught the leap!!

Today I was watching the bush in good time. The patio door was shut, but the woodmouse didn't mind me opening the slider carefully so this video was the result.

Very short, Emma Peel style, leathe gloves with an attitude. Two zippers and an insert of pink leather add to their style. Their leather is soft and they feel tight and comfortable on the hand.

SICHUAN CHINA JUNE 2017 - very lucky to see snow during summer time, according to locals this is very rare to happen, this trip is very adventurous, driving up on narrow roads and high altitude, my adrenaline was rushing up to my brain when I looked out of the 4wd window, the bottom seems to very far away. — with John Wan, Benjamin Ho Swee Huat, Jiuzhaigou Holiday, Albert Low, Liewwk WK, Siva Kumar and 李業泰 at Mount Gongga.

She's gone.

So is the dog.

There's not a trace of the people who once lived on houseboats under Pittsburgh's bridges.

Today, on the spot where someone snapped this photo 65 years ago, adventurous types rent kayaks and paddle along the Allegheny.

Now, the rivers are playgrounds.

But back then, the city's waterways were home for this woman and her pet.

May they float on.

Somewhere.

Forever.

Very spontaneous Indiana Jones fig to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Raiders of the lost Ark.

Couldn’t locate the single brown whip piece I own, so this black one had to jump in.

The gallery was completed in 1882 and is open to explore her legacy today.

More than 800 remarkable paintings cover the walls of the Marianne North Gallery.

A vivid collection of 19th century botanical art, the gallery is a treat for both art lovers and adventurous minds. As a woman who defied convention, North travelled the world solo to record the tropical and exotic plants that captivated her.

She challenged the tradition of Victorian flower painting and chose to paint plants in their natural settings instead. Her work became a powerful record of the dramatic landscapes she visited and the plants that inhabit them - years ahead of the invention of colour photography.

Now, North’s vast collection of paintings is on permanent display here at Kew, exhibited in geographical order for you to follow in her footsteps.
