Wishing you all an adventurous New Year!

Another fun and adventurous day this past Sunday and this is how it started! A spur of the moment turn up a road and eventually it was hard to even call it a road! Two tire tracks through the forest and that was it and talk about bumpy and bouncy! There was mention made about broken axles or other crucial pieces of equipment and at one point my seat belt nearly cut off circulation! Eventually it came to a dead end and and therein lay the problem. How to turn around! But Anita was able to pull it off without either of us or the vehicle dying so it remained a grand adventure! Glad that tree didn't decide to give it up either. LOL

A healthy green creeper sendng out an exploratory shoot to boldly go find new space.

Don't mind me, I'm halfway through Series 2 of Star Trek The Original Series. I got interested after going to see 84 yo Wiliam Shatner at his live show recently.

This moose calf was actually quite adventurous and didn't exhibit any caution. But in this shot I think it has a wary expression. It's mom was nearby and she didn't pay much attention to the wanderings of her youngster. I remember this encounter like it was yesterday...even though it was nearly eight years ago.

I liked the light that morning and the ripples on the pond surface caused by the calf's movement.

I really ought to become a bit more adventurous at bluebell time. There are plenty of quiet intimate woodlands in the area, many of them explored and reported back on over morning coffee by my colleague Katie before I packed work in for good. I made mental notes of all of her weekend wanderings and resolved to go and act upon the secrets that had been so generously shared with me. While I see plenty of fantastic images from the more widely visited hotspots, I prefer to hide in a little known backwater where only a few locals tread. Even Katie's recommendations lie as yet untouched by my boots and tripod, in favour of the spot that I've visited with unerring predictability for the last seven springtimes and the last seven autumns. One day I really ought to try another location.

But you see the woodland without a name has it all for me in abundance. A stream runs right through the mostly beech filled wilderness, a network of small paths cutting through the swathes of spring bluebells and wild garlic. While the struggle to produce images under those watchful trees continued to mystify me, the familiarity brought by the continual visits, coupled with the way the light filters through the forest on a sunny evening helped me to begin to make sense of that eternal woodland photography challenge. The time spent within these few acres has brought some of the happiest moments or pure abandon, even when the art of delivering a compelling image remained so aloof. I recently watched a hiking programme during which our intrepid adventurer was introduced to something called "forest bathing" in the nearby Helford Passage, a practice which entails simply opening your senses to the sights, smells and sounds around you and letting go of everything else. Well you might imagine what I thought - although I really had no idea that what I'd been doing for years had a name. But if I find a group of seemingly entranced celebrities sitting on tree stumps gazing into nothingness on my next visit I will not be impressed.

This particular area of the woods also managed to hide from me for a number of years, until a search for wild garlic brought me here twelve months ago. While a substantial patch of the white stuff lay in another part of the wood, it never seemed to catch that dappled light I wanted, so further exploration was on the agenda. Eventually I stumbled across the stream into a colourful corridor white I'd never come to in spring before. At the edge of the trees, sunlight bled softly through the canopy and spread itself across so many thousands of tiny white and purple flowers. It took a couple of visits before I went home with something that I was happy enough to share, and from then the new spot became one I'd return to in the future.

And so I did, three times in a span of five days last week, each time heading to this exact spot and hoping the evening light would do what I hoped for. Each time I'd find myself waiting for as much as an hour for the light, and each time I saw not a single person in this quiet corner of perfection. It makes me wonder how on earth that narrow path even exists. This shot came from the second of those three visits, on an evening when an unrelenting breeze forced the ISO beyond where I'd normally want to take it, but the light was just how I hoped it would be at that moment.

The bluebells in the wood were especially good this season, smothering the forest floor, full of vitality and packed with a scent I'd never noticed before. But I really need to spread my wings a little next time and venture into new spaces to continue this strange affair with woodland photography; ever challenging, often frustrating, but always especially rewarding when a moment delivers a shot worth sharing.

This encapsulates a couple things that on a daily basis I am grateful for...

1) When I was a little boy, I would always dream and fantasize about living in a big city. I couldn't wait to get the hell out of Florida! Im grateful for my adventurous spirit that I had in my twenties. On a whim...I bought a bus ticket to SF and spent four days on buses traveling to what would be my new home. To this day when Im on the Bay Bridge, I always think and remember when I was on that Greyhound bus...the sun rising, and I saw SF for the first time....I was ecstatic...and I will always call SF my home. Ive lived here for 29 years, and will never move away....even if I were to become homeless again.

2) As I mentioned....I was homeless here In SF. I succumbed to my addiction, and willingly became homeless so that I would have more money to sustain my addiction. How crazy was that.....that is the insanity of addiction. I was homeless for over two years. I slept in parks and on benches, and ate at churches that would supply food. It wasnt until I adressed my addiction, that I got honest with myself that my life began to turn around. Ive had my struggles, and some relapses.....but I never returned to the streets, thank God. I moved into an apartment in the Tenderloin and lived there for several years until moving to where I now live.

I live in the SOMA district, in a small high-rise, on the top floor. The artwork posted here is my view. Ive lived here for 3 years, and I have 4 years of recovery and sobriety.

These.....are things that I am grateful for on a daily basis....I have tears in my eyes as I write this as I never want to forget that I was homeless and where I slept, and how if I idnt get into recovery, I would never be able to live in this beautiful space.......and I always think of when I was little.....dreaming of living in a big city.

"The Orwell School opened in 1895 with Mr. J.S. O'Neill engaged by the local school trustees to teach Grades 1 through 10. Although Orwell School lacked things considered basic today, many of its scholars went on to achieve high standings in colleges and universities. Others stayed in the community to learn a trade or work family farms, while some of the more adventurous went to sea or left the Island in search of opportunity."

Being adventurous while walking the dogs has led me to some interesting places and potential photo spots right next to home.

This is important to me, since I see these areas all the time, it's easy to subconsciously write them off as boring.

So the message started with "are you feeling adventurous?" Sure I say......

Hmmmm, Well what did this mean..... meeting at 1am and staying on the beach for 4 or so hours in the cold..... what the heck you only live once, and off we went......

And wow ..... having never spent the night on the beach before I was amazed at the number of shooting stars and just the stars in general were mesmerizing,,,,,

Thanks Mark for taking me.... it was a fun morning......

Conversely, the Astronauts can not image a more adventurous life than that of the Prince of England. Some how, "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence",

I felt this way for a moment while taking this shot from the starboard side of the "Queen Of Sorry I'm Late" Ferry. While ensconced in the very activity that brings me so much delight, a part of me could not imagine a more adventurous moment than sailing with the mountains and sunset at one's back. And to add to this moment, it was a David and Goliath scenario as the sailboat steered headlong toward the Ferry. However, the skipper knew well, the Ferry would not be there when he arrived.

About Miskatonic University:

Founded in the late 18th century in the fictional city of Arkham, Massachusetts, Miskatonic University (M.U.) is the fictional, prestigious, and secretly terrifying, New England university at the heart of the Cthulhu Mythos. M.U. is known worldwide for its rare book collection (which includes forbidden texts like the Necronomicon) and its adventurous, often doomed, expeditions.

M.U.'s relevance stems from its role as the custodian and investigator of all things inhuman and forbidden. Every piece in this collection is treated as an archived specimen or forensic evidence seized from terrifying events like the Innsmouth Raid or recovered from nightmarish expeditions. While the public sees a stately academy, the vaults below hold the truth: Miskatonic is the only institution standing between humanity and the endless chaos of the Elder Gods.

Another shot from my adventurous ramble around the Heysham headland. This is the Light at the entrance to Heysham Harbour with the Dredger "Deo Gloria" working to clear the channel of the Harbour entrance in the background.

It was fascinating watching this ship at work. It is a "trail suction hopper dredger" apparently. This is where the silt and mud is sucked up from the sea bed by trailing suction hoovers into the ships hoppers, which are then emptied elsewhere when they are full. You can see the ship is low in the water with sea water flowing over its sides as it leaves the detritus mud and sand in the ships belly.

Lonely Wolf Seeks Adventurous Red Riding Hood

Tired of prowling through the woods alone. Seeking one daring, cloak-wearing risk-taker who doesn’t mind a little fur and fangs.

About me:

- Strong, independent, and howls at the moon for fun.

Excellent sense of direction (unless there’s a woodcutter involved).

- Has all my own teeth

- Enjoys long walks through the forest, sneaking into grandmas’ houses, and howling meaningful ballads about life’s mysteries (and maybe an occasional hunger pang).

About you:

- Loves the color red, because I can’t resist a bold fashion statement.

- Enjoys surprise visits to Granny's house—bonus points if you can bake.

- Must appreciate a wolf with layers: I’ve got a wild side but also a soft side (especially around cuddly grandmas).

Let's skip the huffing and puffing, and build something real.

You bring the basket, I’ll bring the charm.

Swipe right on this Big Bad Wolf—promise I’m mostly harmless. ;)

Just a little thing I built to say thank you for over 1000 followers! I would of never thought I would of got this many, or been on flickr for so long. I know that probably half of my followers are inactive as I have been on this site for a while and seen people come and go, but to those who to this day, still view, favourite and comment on my photos, thank you, would of never continued without you guys!

Also heading back to uni today, so I might go dead again for a few months, but I'll try to get as many photos out as I can :) Once again thank you guys!

Adventurous.... amazing that they are only 2 days old

In Explore August 31, 2022

For centuries rumors of mysterious white lions had been circulating in South Africa. Confirmation of the existence of white lions only came in the twentieth century. White lions were first recorded in 1928 and in the early 1940s. In 1975, two white cubs were seen at Timbavati Game Reserve, adjacent to Krüger National Park in South Africa. They were roughly two weeks old. The discovery was a sensation. The white specimens proved to be male and female. They were named Temba (Zulu for hope) and Tombi (girl).

A few months later Temba en Tombi were taken to the National Zoo in Pretoria, South Africa.

The 50 white lions currently in zoos worldwide are descendants of Temba and Tombi. White Lions cannot probable survive in the wild due to perceived lack of camouflage. Adult white lions in the wild have never seen.

White Lions are not albinos, but rare color mutations of the Krüger subspecies of lion (Panthera leo krugeri). They have a combination of recessive genes which give them a white skin. The genetic condition, leucism, that causes paler colouration akin to that of the white tiger; the condition is similar to melanism, which causes black panthers. The white lion has been perpetuated by selective breeding in zoos around the world.

Photographed Yakima Area Arboretum. This is a rare bird in Yakima County, Washington. I and others have seen them at the sparrow patch along the Poppoff Trail spot past years. Thanks to Kevin Lucas for sharing this bird with me.

The Harris's sparrow is a large sparrow that breeds in the north part of central Canada. In the winter they migrate to the Great Plains states from lower South Dakota to upper Texas. A few adventurous birds evidently prefer Yakima County, Washington in the winter.

What an adventurous way to get to work! A harbor pilot is working his way around the deck of a pilot boat to, literally, jump onboard this cruise ship. The harbor pilot can assist the captain in bringing the ship to and from port, or they could take control of the ship and bring it in and out of port on their own.

I totally messed up on this one! With a very quick grab of my camera, I just didn't think to check my shutter speed, as it was a little too slow for action like this!

At port in Italy. Pentax.

Pleasant Creek marks the start of 50 miles of bad road on a dirt/rock track known as the South Draw Road. The reviews suggest that the road is so rugged, sometimes passengers get out and walk to get relief from the battering. We decided we didn't need to take that road.

Wishing all an adventurous, creative, rewarding 2020 tog year... :)

This adventurous newt certainly managed to get out of the pond overnight, but it didn't manage to escape from the birds' raisin bowl where I found it this morning. Of course I returned it promptly to the pond, managing a photo shoot before it slithered away into the depths.
