Ten months in the making, I've finally completed my Eisenhower Interstate System one- and two-digit highway interchange abstraction map! I originally saw Chris Yates's simplified version (www.chrisyates.net) on Strange Maps (strangemaps.wordpress.com), and decided to do a decidedly non-simplified version. If I counted the number of hours devoted to this, it would provide a quantified measure of how nerdy I am. The total hour count is easily in the three digits.
I like the look of Chris's map better than mine (http://www.chrisyates.net/reprographics/index.php?page=424), but you need to make aesthetic compromises when you're cramming that much information into a small space. Plus I don't want to step on any artistic toes.
Just for kicks, I added lines indicating coastlines and borders.
If you see any inaccuracies, let me know! With over 220 interchanges, I'm bound to have made some errors.
I collected my data using Google Earth, and frequently used the City Boundaries and Places of Interest layers to pinpoint exact locations of interchanges. In places of ambiguity, I applied a consistent set of rules for determining in which city an interchange occurred; these criteria are too numerous and boring to list here, but I'd be happy to explain them if you disagree with my choices.

Goal: Invite our church body, of an upcoming conference specifically designed around serving in the church.
Audience: Entire church body
Direction: None
Project: Posters, handouts, specialized invites, screen title slide and scripture slide.
Other important info: Some invites we're giving out to specific members of our church for our supportive ministries conference.
We wanted the "invite" side to be specifically more personal. So we opted for some hand-lettering.

It's time for some more of The Shop's unusual vector assets : the geometrical psychology diagrams. These were originally created as an attempt to "mathematically model human consciousness through geometric forms" in the late 1880s.
There are two main groups of assets: the first one, with mainly two dimensional diagrams, and second one, of more than two dimensions, that resemble flowers and crystals. I also added some random nuggets from the rest of the collection. The diagrams have that beautiful execution of late Victorian era scientific illustration, while also presenting an undeniable organic touch. The "three dimensional" group of assets also feature shading, and color highlights.
There are forty-five (45) assets altogether, carefully digitized, organized, and share in a variety of formats, with care. I would recommend using them as background elements, color scheme inspirations, or of course as the centerpiece of the project you're working on.

My Adobe Illustrator version of Reinhart Wettach's (1898-1976) vintage Alps poster. Created entirely in Adobe Illustrator.
Reinhart's original work is one of my all time favorite tourism posters that really captures the excitement, grandeur and adventure of travel.
To differentiate from the original, I updated the nation-state names and added in the couple featured in one of the famous WPA Great Depression era travel posters that Tyler Nordgren often adds to his own popular, "Half the Park is After Dark!" series of posters.

This is one of the few Hitchcock movies I watched when I was younger and I have always loved it. I do a lot of "flat" or two-dimensional looking posters, which is a look I like very much - but I wanted to bring my simplistic style into a more three-dimensional setting.
All these angles are totally just guess and check. I won't admit how much of today this took up, other than a lot of it.
Getting the perspective correct was tricky and I am really please with how the whole thing came out as a whole.

My Adobe Illustrator reproduction of a well known vintage travel poster for Brambruesch, Switzerland.
I changed some things around from the original to include, different colors for the girl's hair and clothes, some landscape color changes, and more vegetation in the foreground.
I also thought the girl's right arm was somewhat out of proportion to her body and made some subtle changes there as well.
Overall, I was pleased how this reproduction turned out.

I have learned all about the opacity mask feature in Adobe Illustrator!! whoopee!
Should really have looked into it before now after all the years I have been using it, but it is easy to become complacent!
5ish hours later I have billowing clouds of smokey destruction with blurred edges all done in vectors :)
well pleased but have set myself the task of refining the opacity mask skills!
May also refine and darken the houses of parliament...

Produced in Adobe Illustrator. I see several different versions of this poster on the interwebs and googles, so I'm not sure if my reproduction here is actually off the original, or an updated version.
Creating the blur of motion was challenging; tried several different methods using different tools in Adobe Illustrator.
Out of all the intersections in Chicago, I'd worry about this one the least, but it was the most recent problem I ran into.
A study of Milwaukee Avenue at Fulton Street and Clinton Street. (map in image 1)
PROBLEM
At the upcoming 5-way intersection, drivers and bicyclists can turn in four directions but must make their turn decision before passing under the viaduct. (image 2)
The driver of the white van (image 3) has indicated their intention to turn either soft-right or hard right (135° or 45°).
I, riding a bicycle, have indicated my intention to turn soft-left (135°) by riding in the center bike lane.
The driver of of the white van has gone against their indicated intention and created a potentially dangerous situation by illegally turning left from a right-turn only lane. (image 4)
[It may also be the case that the driver of the white van could be cited for turning left in front of a bicyclist.]
What is a possible solution to this problem?
This is the finished product for the first project in my typography class. The assignment was the take the phrase "Just because you can does not mean that you should" and illustrate it using the text and minimal illustration. Admittedly, I went a little overboard with illustration, but I'm happy with the outcome.

For the Illustration Friday group, I point out that the man's scrubs are really WRINKLED!!! In the story the hero (Michael) is an escapee from protective custody in a scientific institute in a post-apocalyptic, Utopian society (where he is being studied because of his brain's unusual ability to work as a receiver for radio waves), and naturally escapees don't usually have access to irons or dry cleaning. Also Michael's brain is his most valuable organ; WRINKLES are characteristic of maturing brains; what Hercule Poirot used to call "the little gray cells" are composed of wrinkled (and therefore imprinted with memory and knowledge) matter--thus wrinkles are an integral part of the story in two ways.
