Terrie Cornell (pink top) and Jessica Sholts (grey shirt) volunteers at the Avenir Museum help to unpack and prepare to move-in to the new addition of the Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising, June 18, 2015.
The area was originally a 3 season porch. The existing deck was supported while the demolition/construction of the addition was being performed. The entire structure was removed down to the foundation. The foundation was built to match the height of the existing house. According to the supplied architectural plans, the new structure was built. The roof lines were integrated into one another, siding was blended from old to new, and the deck was attached to the new addition. The new addition was to accommodate the new kitchen. All the necessary pluming, electrical, and structural work was performed. The new kitchen featured a cathedral ceiling, sky light, oak floors, granite countertops, custom cabinetry, a teak center island and dining table.
Like Rumpelstiltskin, I am creating objects of art by weaving together the ubiquitous, the
quotidian, and the ephemeral, instead of his straw. My work is sculptural basketry. Tatlin meets the Appalachian Craft tradition and beautiful organic forms take shape.

When I saw this Killdeer today, it reminded me of a young bird I had photographed in almost the same spot early in the summer, so I decided to grab an image to do a before and after.
In another area of the county today, I saw about two dozen Killdeer in a freshly plowed field, and it was surprising how well they blended in until I scanned the field with binoculars.
Leonard's Pond, where this shot was taken, is a hotspot for birders in the central Shenandoah Valley. It's basically a large cow pond. The cows keep at least one area as a mudflat, and that attracts migrating shorebirds as well as the almost always present Killdeer. For birders, it helps that the pond is right next to a public road with room to pull off.
When I stopped by the pond today, in addition to 185 Canada Geese and some Mallards there were two Common Terns and four Dunlin. In the mountain and valley region of Virginia, the terns and Dunlin are both considered rare transients.

I found this one hiding among some different flower pics and wished that I had uploaded this instead/as well as the others. So I've sneaked it in. No need for extra comments unless you desperately want to!!
I keep going back to the photos I took in Comfort, Texas and finding more jewels. Last night I finally edited this photo to my satisfaction. It is the top of a later addition to the Faltin building posted earlier.
I have more to post but will do so later. I need to spend the day pursuing other job options. Really frustrating to finally finish my degree so I can get a better paying job and then not be able to find one, especially in one's chosen career field! This job hunting thing is getting me down. Trying to stay upbeat and hopeful but when the bank account dwindles and rent is due in two weeks a sense of panic is slowly creeping in...Hmmm, Wal-Mart greeter perhaps...
I've been in this house for 15 years, and I'm finally going to have a place where I can relax and see my backyard from the inside of the first floor of the house. The job's not done, but it's close!
