Haven't done much winter photography this year, so I am re-posting a photo from 2014. Snow-flakes were stopped by firing the camera's flash in addition to the ambient light. With camera on tripod.
This is my latest addition to the 2nd Volume of The Holy Beauty Project. I wrote some stuff about it on my blog if you want to read.
Btw, we're on the 3rd painting already, which means there are 2 more you probably haven't seen...and there are more to come. Plus a video. No pressure, but if you want to be up to date, follow these links: one, two, three. wink_wink.
The Head. Acrylic on canvas. 50 x 50 cm. 2010.
L&C train 14 has just departed Lancaster and is seen rolling westbound towards Richburg on a misty and rainy morning with a G&O painted GP40-2LW leading the L&C blue high hood GP38AC, and a recently acquired MP15DC. With nearly no two of the same model locomotives on the railroad, the L&C is a haven for oddball mashups of power like this.
A very interesting addition that was brand new into the Lakeside fleet in January 2020 is this Alexander-Dennis, Enviro 400MMC. It was purchased to bring some school contracts to DDA spec away from coaches, also with the additional role of been used for rail replacement. One unexpected use in late July 2020 is use on the commercially operated 449 Ellesmere to Oswestry service, usually the domain of Solos or Solo SRs, thought to be used to help with social distancing capacity on some trips due to covid related regulations currently in play.
Double deckers as a rule are not common with Shropshire operators, certainly not brand new and this is the first double decker to be owned and operated by Lakeside so been purchased brand new is impressive.
Aruba, a small island in the Dutch Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela, has a dry climate, sunny beaches and gentle waves. Constant winds produce a cool breeze and tilt trees (like the famous divi-divi) to the southwest. The European influence appears in the architecture, characterized by the Dutch gables painted in tropical pastel tones. This is also evident in the coexistence of the local language, Papiamento, with English, Dutch and Spanish. The country does not have fresh water but it has desalinated water of excellent quality and you can safely drink tap water. The small country is a major producer and exporter of aloe vera (aloe vera) and is strong in the financial and fishing sectors, in addition to logistical services in the oil sector. It is a small island with a lot of sun and wind all the time, which favors the country's main economic activity, tourism. Its area is 179 km2 (69.1 mi2) and is densely populated by approximately 110,000 inhabitants (2020 Census) and has a per capita income of just over US$25,000 p.a. The country's capital is Oranjestad.
kkkk um
A couple of photographs of a new and fabulous addition to the British Columbia Aviation Museum in Victoria. The story is probably best written up by the article www.key.aero/article/convair-fire-bomber-flies-retirement:
"Canada’s BC Aviation Museum experienced a first on September 23 [2022] – the simultaneous retirement to the museum of both an aircraft and its pilot. The aircraft was Convair CV-580 C-FHKF, a machine that spent more than 20 years fighting fires – and making his farewell flight at the controls was Grahame Wilson, who has some 40 years’ experience in the role. In Grahame’s capable hands, the aircraft made a final flight from Abbotsford to the museum’s home at Victoria International Airport. Kilo-Foxtrot will now be put on static display, with Grahame volunteering as a tour guide, explaining to visitors how aviation shaped the province. Originally built in 1955 as a CV-440 ‘Metropolitan’ – an all-metal airliner – it first flew with Sabena Air of Belgium. Eventually exported to Canada, it was converted to an air tanker and began operations with Abbotsford-based Conair from 2000. Grahame fondly recalls that every year he spent with Conair was “special”, and that of all the aircraft he flew, the CV-580 was the most enjoyable and fulfilling."
From the aviation museum's webpage at www.bcam.net/the-modern-era-1970/, we have a history of this beautiful aircraft:
"Convair CV580 T[anker] 55 spent more than 20 years as an air tanker fighting fires in British Columbia and abroad. The aircraft was built in 1956 as a Convair 440 ‘Metropolitan’- a twin piston-engine, 34 passenger, all-metal airliner with pressurized cabin. In 1956 it entered service with Sabena Air of Belgium, where it operated for 12 years before being sold in 1968 to Frontier Airlines of Denver, Colorado, and modernized to a turboprop airliner designated the Convair 580. Frontier operated the airliner for 17 years until sold to Sierra Pacific Airlines of Tucson, Arizona, with whom it remained for a further 15 years. Exported to Canada, it was then converted to an air tanker configuration and in the year 2000 entered operations with Conair of Abbotsford, British Columbia. At the end of the 2022 fire season and following 22 years as an air tanker, the Convair 580 T[anker] 55 was donated to the BC Aviation Museum by Conair Group Inc."
Reports came out that 6C98 would be 97304 with 5 autoballisters. As you can see here however, all that gen was wrong!
37219 trails the long welded rail holder and 97303 on 6C98 Crewe to Harlech. This 37 must already be ETMRS fitted as only the 97/3's and 158's can run along that line at the moment.

WILD THISTLE
The artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is the edible flower par excellence, as well as a vegetable and medicinal plant with a long tradition. It is endemic to the Mediterranean region, where the first evidence of the presence of this plant dates back to the first century AD. In France and England, however, the artichoke spread only starting from the 15th century. Today, artichokes are increasingly seen in home gardens because, in addition to being useful, they are also beautiful and ornamental.
It is also well known as a medicinal plant and was named medicinal plant of the year in 2003. It helps the regular functioning of the liver and gall bladder and has appetite-stimulating, digestive and cholesterol-reducing effects. For medicinal use, an infusion of dried artichoke leaves is used, which is consumed as a tea.

In addition to the Monarchs we found yesterday, a few other butterflies were present, including this "dark morph" Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. Both sexes of this species are normally yellow with black stripes, but sometimes the females are dark as seen here. From this underside view, there are two ways to differentiate it from the similar, but different species known as a Black Swallowtail. Though it's far more noticeable on the yellow ones, there are still hints of the dark "tiger stripes" even on a dark morph. That is usually most noticeable on the hindwing as seen here. Also, the body of this butterfly is solid black, and lacking the rows of pale yellow dots that are visible on a Black Swallowtail's body. I'll admit, the two species can be easy to mix up, especially if you're only seeing them in flight or from a distance. It helps when there are native flowers like this Wild Bergamot to entice them to pause for a photo. Ramsey County, MN 08/03/24

In 1957, a small group of ex-service pilots pooled their money to purchase a P-51 Mustang, beginning what is now called the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). With the addition of a pair of F8F Bearcats, the CAF became the founders of the Warbird Movement, an effort to preserve and honor our military history with the rallying cry to “Keep ‘Em Flying!” Now, 55 years later, the CAF is the premier Warbird organization, operating 156 vintage aircraft in honor of American Military Aviation. A non-profit educational association, the CAF has approximately 9,000 members operating this fleet of historic aircraft, distributed to 70 units located in 28 states. The Douglas SBD Dauntless is one of only two actively flying examples of a naval dive bomber that was made by Douglas during World War II. SBD stands for Scout Bomber Douglas and was the main dive bomber used by the US Navy from mid-1940 until late 1943. At that time it was largely replaced by the SB2C Helldiver. SBD has also been lovingly known to mean “Slow But Deadly”, and yet although slow and outmoded when it began its combat career, it was a rugged and dependable machine and was accredited to sinking more Japanese ships than any other aircraft during World War II. The SBD was primarily produced at the Douglas plant at Tulsa, Oklahoma and was equipped with a 1,200 hp Wright R1820-60 single piston engine. This particular SBD was produced in 1939 and was primarily used as a Carrier-based Bomber.

Additions to homes must get approval from the Acoma Chief and can go no higher than three stories because of the high winds across the mesa. The Raven that kept flying around is slightly visible in this photo.
In addition to the ever-popular Lotus that are in currently in bloom at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens there are thousands of native water lilies in several of the aquatic ponds.
Also there are a small number (dozens) of "fancy" tropical water lilies in the small pools around the visitor center.
For something a little different, I used Lightroom's masking tool to black out everything but the lily blossom itself.
This is the newest addition to my garden. I spotted this Gazania at our local nursery for $2 and decided on the spot that I had to have it. I love the colour of this one. This is taken with my 75-300 mm lens and the 36 mm Kenko macro extension tube.

A new addition to my "Bayside Impressions" series
I have not done this for a while, but it felt really good to do some black and white long exposure work again. This image and another one were just about right to be added to my series "Bayside Impressions".
Long exposure black and white photography has become a very popular genre in photography and many photographers followed masters like Michael Levin, Jeff Gaydash, Marc Koegel and Joel Tjintjelaar and started experimenting with neutral density filters. I personally enjoy the idea of taking long exposure photographs a lot. It always fascinated me how light gathered on film and produces a image that not only captured light but also time. I did not like the clean and sometimes overproceseds look of some of the digitally processed images. My process is a bit different, it concentrates on the more natural look of a scene and less on the creative interpretation. This is just a different approach and something that suits my personal style more. I hope you are enjoying this photograph. The Bay Bridge and the piers in San Francisco have been photographed many times, but they are still iconic and people will continue to shoot them over th next decades. This is my interpretation, my work, my photograph - one among others but still unique.
Pier 24 is a wonderful place to view and think about photography. If you have not yet been there I highly recommend putting this on your itinerary for the next SF trip.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, marketed as FIFA World Cup '26, will be the 23rd FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men's soccer championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. It will be jointly hosted by 16 cities in three North American countries: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The tournament will be the first hosted by three nations and the first North American World Cup since 1994.
On June 16, 2022, the sixteen host cities (2 in Canada, 3 in Mexico, 11 in the United States) were announced by FIFA: Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Guadalajara, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Monterrey, Mexico City, Toronto, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Miami. Eight of the sixteen chosen stadiums have permanent artificial turf surfaces that are planned to be replaced with grass under the direction of FIFA and a University of Tennessee–Michigan State University research team. Four venues (Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and Vancouver) are indoor stadiums that use retractable roof systems, all equipped with climate control while a fifth, Los Angeles, is open-air but has a translucent roof and no climate control.
In addition to turf replacement with real grass and the retractable roof on AT&T Stadium (purposely installed so God can watch his favorite football team play), owners of this stadium are installing artificial sun lights/lamps to aid in the real grass field growth just for this tournament. The white rectangles seen on the floor in the photograph above are the support structures for the artificial sun fixtures. They are attached to cables and winches at the structure of the buildings roof so that the lights can be raised and lowered as needed to aid the the grass growth and maintenance. While I was disappointed to not see the normal football field turf and big blue star in the middle, it was interesting to see work going on in the Spring of 2024 in preparation for a soccer tournament scheduled for the Summer of 2026. And...the rest of the stadium tour was just amazing!
