What casting directors really want
Had a shoot with young actor Jordan Billings.
We met up in his home town of Newton Le Willows. He travelled down from his acting studies at Preston University.
Casting directors and agents had given Jordan advice on the images required for professional actors' listings on Spotlight, Starnow and for casting in general. They want clean, professional headshots, so casting directors know what they're getting.
With the mobile studio set up, we captured a good range of images, giving Jordan plenty to choose from.
Jordan is an absolute gentleman and has a lovely family.

Rod Cameron (1910-1983) was a Canadian-born film and television actor whose career extended from the 1930s to the 1970s. He appeared in Horror, War, Action and Science Fiction films, but is best remembered for his many Westerns.
Rod Cameron was born Nathan Roderick Cox in Calgary, Canada, in 1910. He grew up in New Jersey. He played on his high school basketball team and on a semi-professional football team. Despite those activities and others such as swimming and playing ice hockey, he couldn't join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police because he failed the physical examination. He decided to seek fame and fortune as an actor in New York and initially grabbed some work as a labourer on the Holland Tunnel project in Manhattan. When no progress was made acting-wise, Cameron moved to Hollywood. He made his "debut" in an unbilled bit in one of Bette Davis' scenes in The Old Maid (Edmund Goulding, 1939). Upon release, however, he discovered his bit in the scene had been deleted. He worked as a stuntman and bit player for Paramount Pictures as well as a stand-in for such stars as Fred MacMurray. His early films include Heritage of the Desert (Lesley Selander, 1939) with Donald Woods, Rangers of Fortune (Sam Wood, 1940) with Fred MacMurray, North West Mounted Police (Cecil B. DeMille, 1940) starring Gary Cooper, and Henry Aldrich for President (Hugh Bennett, 1941) with Jimmy Lydon. He also played bit roles at Universal Pictures, including in If I Had My Way (David Butler, 1940), starring Bing Crosby and Gloria Jean. He appeared in a Horror film, The Monster and the Girl (Stuart Heisler, 1941) and played Jesse James in The Remarkable Andrew (Stuart Heisler, 1941) for Paramount. In 1943, Cameron gained star status in action serials for Republic Pictures. As crime-busting secret agent Rex Bennett, Cameron battled enemy terrorists in 15 weekly episodes of G-Men vs the Black Dragon (Spencer Gordon Bennet, William Witney, William J O'Sullivan, 1943). He was already working on another serial when the audience reaction to Black Dragon made him a hit. Cameron was sufficiently popular for the studio to turn the new production into another Rex Bennett adventure, Secret Service in Darkest Africa (Spencer Gordon Bennet, 1943). This time, clench-jawed Bennet faces the Nazis rather than the Japanese. As with the earlier instalment, Bennet is supported by characters from some of the allied nations in World War II. When cowboy star Johnny Mack Brown left Universal Pictures for Monogram Pictures, Cameron replaced him as Universal's Western series star with Fuzzy Knight as his comic sidekick. Tall and rugged, Cameron looked good in the saddle and was very popular.
During World War II, Rod Cameron played in Commandos Strike at Dawn (John Farrow, 1942) starring Paul Muni, and played a US Marine in Wake Island (John Farrow, 1942) and Gung Ho! ( Ray Enright, 1943), starring Randolph Scott. Universalalso gave him roles in Salome, Where She Danced (Charles Lamont, 1945), Frontier Gal (Charles Lamont, 1945) and River Lady (George Sherman, 1948), all co-starring fellow Canadian Yvonne DeCarlo. Universal reorganised as Universal-International and downsized its activities in 1947, leaving Cameron and other contract players unemployed. He was hired by Monogram Pictures for a long string of outdoor action pictures. In 1948, he starred in Panhandle (Lesley Selander, 1948), co-written by Blake Edwards, for Allied Artists, and with Bonita Granville in the comedy film Strike It Rich (Lesley Selander, 1949). He then appeared in many Westerns and other films for Republic Pictures including Santa Fe Passage (William Witney, 1955) with John Payne, and later The Gun Hawk (Edward Ludwig, 1963), Requiem for a Gunfighter (Spencer Gordon Bennet, 1965) and The Bounty Killer (Spencer Gordon Bennet, 1965) starring Dan Duryea. Cameron traveled to Europe in 1964 to play the lead in Spaghetti Westerns such as Le pistole non discutono/Bullets Don't Argue (Mario Caiano, 1964) with Horst Frank, and Il piombo e la carne/Bullet in the Flesh (Marino Girolami, 1965). In Germany, he made Winnetou und sein Freund Old Firehand/Winnetou and Old Firehand (Alfred Vohrer, 1966), starring Pierre Brice. He later appeared in such films as The Last Movie (Dennis Hopper, 1971), Evel Knievel (Marvin J. Chomsky, 1971) with George Hamilton, and the horror film Psychic Killer (Ray Danton, 1975).
Rod Cameron starred in three syndicated television series: City Detective (1953–1955), State Trooper (1956–1959), and the Coronado 9 (1960–1961). In City Detective, Cameron appeared as the tough New York City police Lieutenant Bart Grant. In State Trooper, a 1950s-style Western-themed crime drama, Cameron starred as Lieutenant Rod Blake of the Nevada State Police. In Coronado 9, set in the San Diego area, Cameron appeared as Dan Adams, a private detective. State Trooper, in particular, was known for its surprise endings and guest stars despite not being affiliated with a network. Hal Erickson, in his book, 'Syndicated Television: The First Forty Years, 1947-1987', cited Cameron's business sense in confining his work in TV series to syndication: "A canny businessman, Cameron knew that his City Detective residuals wouldn't have been as fat had a major television network been claiming a percentage of the action, and as a result the actor vowed to remain in syndication for the rest of his TV career. By 1960, Cameron was drawing over $200,000 per annum in residuals [from his three syndicated programs]..." Cameron himself guest-starred in many TV Westerns, including six appearances on Laramie (1959), with John Smith and Robert Fuller, Bonanza (1959), and The Virginian (1962). Cameron also guest-starred in such dramatic series as Crossroads and Perry Mason, with Raymond Burr. Cameron continued to work in motion pictures and television into the 1970s. He appeared in the very first Alias Smith and Jones (1971) episode that co-starred Roger Davis alongside series star Ben Murphy. Davis replaced Pete Duel after the actor committed suicide by gun on New Year's Eve 1971. He appeared in season 2 of James Garner's detective series, The Rockford Files. Cameron's private life was colourful. In 1954, he divorced his second wife, Angela Alves-Lico (1950-1954) and later married her mother, Dorothy Eveleigh (1960-1983), who was a few years older than him. Hence, his former director, William Witney, publicly acclaimed Cameron the bravest man that he had ever seen. In his later years, Cameron lived on Lake Lanier in northern Georgia. An extended battle with cancer finally claimed the 73-year-old actor in 1983 at a Gainesville, Georgia, hospital. He was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The purpose of the evening was to spread a message of love and hope while raising funds for the Denver Actors Fund, which has made $90,000 available to local theatre artists facing situational medical need. USAID’s Agency Youth Coordinator, Michael McCabe, visited the set of YOLO (You Only Live Once), a popular Ghanaian television series that uses 'edutainment' to provide health information to Ghana’s youth. USAID and its partners work with the YOLO team to integrate health-related social behavior change communication messages about topics including safe motherhood; nutrition; malaria prevention, care and treatment; water, sanitation and hygiene; and HIV/AIDS into season three of the series.
Improved health behavior in Ghana prevents the spread of diseases, including pandemic illnesses.
Expected Result: Improved health in Ghana.

With brilliant character actors of the level of Talish, Alauddin, Zeenat Begum, Kumar and Bibbo, Pakistan were fast coming up as a cinematic entity in the 1950s. After 1970s, the situation deteriorated, because most of these artistes had either died or become too old to act. One of those stalwarts, who made their mark very early after the Partition, was Ali Mir Kumar, a man now distinctly known to the enthusiasts of the films for his vital performance in film Tauba. Kumar belonged to UP India, with his family amongst the most respected Lucknow families of the Syed’s. His real name was Syed Ali Hasan Zaidi, but was lovingly called Mir Mujjan in the family. He started his career in films from New Theatres, Calcutta. His first two movies were Subah Ka Tara and Zinda Lash, in 1932. In these films, he was playing what is called a side role, while the hero in both of them was Saigal, with Rattan Bai. In his third film, Pooran Bhagat, which also had Saigal, Ali Mir became popularly known as Kumar. A personable man, Kumar soon made his presence felt, and was soon being considered as a stylish artiste. He was considered the most well dressed and polished person in the Indian industry. His other films in India were Yahudi Kee Larki, Watan, Suhag, Shehr Ka Jadoo, Maa Ka Pyar, Mughal-e-Azam, Nek Parveen and many others. His acting and dialogue delivery had an individual class, which is evident in many films, including Kamal Amrohi’s Mahal, where as the father of the accused, he implores the barrister to advocate his case well. Similarly, in Tauba, when he realizes that he has wasted his life in drinking, the face registers such sadness that is only brought on by the greatest artistes of their times. As Haji Sahab in Nek Parveen, and as Madhubala’s father in film Tarana, Kumar also impressed. Kumar married a very well known actress of her days, Pramella, and both of them established their own film making house, called Silver House, making films like Naseeb, Jhankar, Barey Nawab Sahab and Devar. His daughter from Pramella was Naqi Jahan, who was a most stunning beauty, and later participated in a Miss India contest.
In 1963, Kumar migrated to Pakistan, and started to work in Pakistani films without any delay. His son, S. A. Hafiz, who made Tauba, later became one of the best and well known directors of the country. Kamal and Zeba played the lead in Tauba, which became a grand success. Kumar performed so brilliantly that the young generation of those times also discovered his potential. In the film, Kumar is shown to be a person belonging to a good family, whose obsession with wine lands him into trouble, and he throws away, a lot of his fortune in pursuance of the drink. But, at the climax, losing all he has, he travels to Data Darbar and falls down at the steps. He wants to repent for his sins, and the Qawwali that follows Na milta agar yeh tauba ka sahara to hum kahan jatay, sung so famously by Saleem Raza, Munir Hussain, Irene Panreen and others, was the highlight of the film. There was a famous legend built around that Qawwali that Kumar was also a drunkard in real life, and having acted in the climax scene, he got so affected that he actually swore off sharab! It is noted by film critics that Qawwali was first used in Pakistan, as a potent climactic element, in Tauba. A. Hameed, who was one of the most versatile music directors of Pakistan, gave super hit songs in the film, including this fine Qawwali in 1964.
Kumar worked in quite a few Pakistani films, including Head Constable, Azad, Shabnam, Naela, Saiqa, Sajda (his own film), Hum Dono, Nadya Ke Paar, Ik Musaflr Ik Hasina, Baalam etc. Kumar died in 1982, while his son, S. A Hafiz had gone and settled in America, and died there. Two fine cameramen of the industry, Azhar Zaidi and Muzaffar Zaidi were Kumar’s nephews, while PTV’s famous makeup artiste, Lily Raza is his niece.

The service, which has been an annual tradition since 1946, is held in memory of Joseph 'Clown Joey' Grimaldi (1778-1837), the most celebrated English clown who was born and performed in London.
The unique church service is held on the first Sunday of each February and a wreath is laid in Grimaldi's honour.

Actor and stage director Joan Remmelts (1905 - 1987) was an ironic and smart star on the Dutch stage. With small, nervous movements and expressions he could show deep emotions. He also appeared successfully in several films and TV series.
Jan van Ees (1896 - 1966) was a popular Dutch actor and author of several stage plays. He was one of the title characters of De Jantjes/The Tars (1934) and starred in four more Dutch films of the 1930s.
Johan Kaart jr. (1897 - 1976) was a star in the Dutch entertainment world. He starred in seven films between 1934 and 1937, and after the war, he played in several other Dutch films. He also worked often on radio and TV, but his main stage was the theatre.
Handsome Willy Costello (1910 - 1953) was a typical example of single luck. Before De Jantjes he had played bit roles in French sound films. After his big turn as the lead actor in De Jantjes he tried his luck in Hollywood, but again he had to play uncredited parts in mediocre films or bigger parts in B-films.
Dutch variety artist and comedian Henriëtte - Heintje - Davids (1888 - 1975) was a popular star in many films of the 1930s. She was the sister of legendary Dutch actor/singer Louis Davids, and she kept performing on stage and on TV till the late 1960s, often announcing that thÃs was her farewell performance.
Another popular star in many Dutch films of the 1930’s was singer and actor Sylvain Poons (1895-1986). He sang two duets which became evergreens: Omdat ik zoveel van je hou (Because I Love You So Much) with Heintje Davids, and the sad fisher ballad De Zuiderzeeballade (Ballad of the Zuiderzee) which he sang in 1958 with the then 14 year old Oetze Verschoor.
