Notes: The Conway in the Stereoscope is a landmark 1860 Victorian travel book featuring North Wales. It combines descriptive text by lawyer James Bridge Davidson with 20 original albumen stereograph photographs by pioneering photographer Roger Fenton. The work allowed mid-19th-century armchair tourists to view the River Conway and its surrounding scenery in three-dimensional depth.Fenton’s images highlight the dramatic landscapes, historic landmarks, and towns (such as Betws-y-Coed and Conway) along the river. By mounting two slightly offset photos next to each other, the book provided an immersive 3D experience when viewed through a specialized stereoscope. It stands as both a beautiful relic of Victorian "armchair tourism" and a masterclass in early stereoscopic photography.
Roger Fenton (20 March 1819 - 8 August 1869) was a pioneering British photographer and one of the first war photographers. Fenton, trained as a lawyer, visited the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in London in 1851 and was impressed by the photography on display there. He then visited Paris to learn the waxed paper calotype process, most likely from Gustave Le Gray, its inventor. By 1852 he had photographs exhibited in England, and travelled to Kiev, Moscow and St. Petersburg making calotypes there, and photographed views and architecture around Britain. He published a call for the setting up of a photographic society.
In 1855 Fenton went to the Crimean War on assignment for the publisher Thomas Agnew to photograph the troops, with a photographic assistant Marcus Sparling and a servant and a large van of equipment. Despite high temperatures, breaking several ribs, and suffering from cholera, he managed to make over 350 usable large format negatives. An exhibition of 312 prints was soon on show in London. Sales were not as good as expected, possibly because the war had ended.
Fenton also produced a number of Stereoscopes of architecture, landscapes and still life subjects. He then produced a series of photographs of cathedrals. For reasons that are not clear, he gave up taking photographs in 1861 and returned to the law; it has been suggested that this was because of his dislike for the increasing commercialization of photography

On Apr. 9, 2025, Fort George G. Meade Directorate of Emergency Services (DES) conducted an active shooter training. This training for Military Police Offices and Law Enforcement Agents demonstrated multiple scenarios that may occur in an active shooting scenario. DES conducts these trainings once per quarter to be ready against any threat.
