Active Weekly May 31st - June 7th: Illusion

Illusion is defined as something which deceives by making a false or misleading impression of reality. I want you to take this however you'd like. I love seeing a variety of photos. This could be an optical illusion or just something that may not be what it seems. You could even make a short story in your description to go along with your picture to explain what makes it an illusion (For example: having a picture of an innocent looking child and then explain that they are in fact a highly dangerous assassin). Get creative and have some fun!

WIT: I had to try this one. Its called a Penrose triangle. I was inspired by a version of this built with dice. I didn't have enough dice so I used some wooden blocks. This is a combination of two images merged together in PSE. The photoshop work took a few more steps than in should have because I wasn't exact enough in my set up of the blocks. i was close, but not close enough. Cropped and a curve adjustment layer added to boost contrast.

Look closely to spot this well-camouflaged female Northern Flicker at her nest in Montpelier, Idaho. Flickers are woodpeckers that nest in cavities they excavate in trees. I was very lucky to spot this hole, and learned that it was an active nest after waiting a few minutes for the bird to arrive.

I originally posted this DJI Mavic 2 Pro Drone image panorama to my photostream on July 2nd 2021 even though I knew there was some badly aligned trees in the original panoramic image.

I decided to have another crack at it and this time downloaded all 26 images that made up the panorama. I submitted all the images to Microsoft Image Composite Editor (MSICE) and after a little playing around was able to correct most of the poor alignments which existed in the previous image.

This image, straight out of MSICE before editing with Luminar AI, was pretty big being 26160 X 7971.

I then submitted the image to Luminar AI but the image could not be saved without significantly downsizing the long edge to just 1500 while retaining the side edge at 7971. This is a major flaw in Luminar AI IMHO and one that many have sought to have corrected. So far Luminar has rejected all approaches to make this change.

Despite the faults in the original image it was somehow quite popular having recorded 417 views, 17 favs and 5 comments as at 12th July 2021 when I replaced it with this Version 2 image..

The area depicted in the image is a replanted area following the drought of 2019. This area was at that time completely covered by many tall Archontophoenix cunninghamiana - Bangalow Palms.

They all died in the 2019 drought and a program of removal and replanting was carried out beginning with the breaking of the long drought on February 8th 2020.

With all the Bangalow Palms gone the area was planted out over several months from February-March of 2020 with hardy dry and subtropical large rainforest trees.

Part of the area, which became known as Cove 19, was used as a place to burn the massive assemblage of Bangalow Palm fronds which had become a terrifying fire risk during the drought of 2019.

Most of the planting was done during the first Covid 19 lockdowns in Australia from March 2020 which arose out of the bungled Ruby Princess Cruise ship passenger evacuation which set off a major contact tracing exercise to locate where all the opportunistically released passengers had gone to after disembarkation.

With regular nightly campfires it wasn't long before our neighbours began to join us, socially distanced of course, around these campfires.

With Donald Trump actively encouraging QAnon and other conspiracy theories during this period many such theories gained a foothold not just in the USA but also in Australia, some even perpetuated by our own then conservative government ministers.

As we sat around the campfire in early 2020 many of these conspiracy theories became the subject of discussions so it was an easy choice when we renamed the forest area here "The Forest of Conspiracy". The circular walking track which defines the area became known as "Fake News Loop".

The use of a drone to capture this shot was something I had previously contemplated however I did not have the skills to do so given the risks posed by the dense vegetation in the area.

This panorama image, (Version 2) was actually taken by my son using a DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone. He has kindly allowed me to post it to my Flickr photostream.

NASA image captured April 3-5, 2011

Cascades of spiraling magnetic loops observed in extreme ultraviolet light by SDO danced and twisted above an active region on the Sun (Apr. 3-5, 2011). These loops are charged particles spinning along the magnetic field lines, and thus visually revealing them. The bright active region was fairly strong and the activity persistent, though not explosive. At one point darker plasma can be seen being pulled back and forth across the region's center.

This particular night was so active, incredibly this is just a 30s shot. The bolts were coming down everywhere. The winds just in front of this system were very strong, at one stage I had to hop into my car, and hope to god my camera rig was sheltered enough not to get knocked over.

Now it's winter, I'm just waiting for next spring-summer so I can get back out into the wheatbelt and beyond.

Baia das Pedras, Southern Pantanal | Brazil

The Pantanal is home to four different armadillo species, ranging in size from the extremely elusive and very rarely seen giant armadillo which spends virtually all its life underground through to the small three-banded variety. Between these two species are the six-banded, which can be seen during the day, and the nine-banded which will generally only be seen at night by torchlight. Also called the Yellow Armadillo, the Six-banded Armadillo favours open ground where it lives in burrows. It will excavates everywhere if the ground is right, leaving some areas like minefields littered with mounds and holes. It’s solitary and although active by day is extremely difficult to see. If you are lucky enough to spot one they are usually lying in the entrance of their burrow and at the slightest sign of danger they will bolt back in. However, if you’re very patient, you may see one travelling between burrows or hunting for food. And, if you’re very lucky, you may just see one standing up in order to get a better view of its surroundings.

Taken at Arenal Observatory Lodge in Costa Rica - a very intriguing place - basically a lodge near the base of a volcano. A very active volcano. The coolest thing would be to see it erupt at night when it would send car-sized boulders of hot lava into the air which would then break up into little bike-sized boulders as it came tumbling down the rocks. Funny place - the big attraction is the volcano, not the wildlife. I was working with the front desk one morning (trying to fax home) when a lady from the states comes to the desk and says, "Excuse me, could you tell me what time the volcano will erupt?".

Just got my flash back from the Canon wizard repair shop. Awesome. If you haven't heard it from me already - Canon service absolutely rocks. Fixed my flash for a very reasonable fee, and put on a new cover to boot (my old one had lots of little plastic burn/melt holes from the better beamer working backwards and frying any ants crawling on my flash!).

Italien / Piemont - Nationalpark Val Grande

On the way from the Capella Fina to the Rifugio Pian Cavallone.

Auf dem Weg von der Capella Fina zum Rifugio Pian Cavallone.

Val Grande National Park (Italian: Parco Nazionale della Val Grande) is a protected area located in Piedmont, in the north of Italy, at the border with Switzerland. It is most notable for landscapes of the High Alps.

Geography

The park is located in Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and is shared between ten municipalities: Aurano, Beura-Cardezza, Caprezzo, Cossogno, Valle Cannobina, Intragna, Malesco, Miazzina, Premosello-Chiovenda, San Bernardino Verbano, Santa Maria Maggiore, Trontano, and Vogogna.

The park lies entirely in the drainage basin of the Po River. It is located between the valley of Vigezzo in the north, the Cannobina valley in the northwest, the valley of Ossola in the southwest, and Lake Maggiore in the southeast. The park is not populated and is often described as "the largest wilderness in the Alps"

Val Grande and Val Pogallo, two principal valleys inside the park, with the former running southeast and the latter running south, feed the two major rivers in the park. These valleys join into Torrente San Bernardino, a tributary of Lake Maggiore. The majority of the area of the park is forested.

History

Shepherds populated Val Grande since at least the 13th century, and the timber production was active since the 15th century. However, at the end of World War II all population left the area, following the actions of German troops against the Italian resistance in the area in June 1944. The idea to create a national park in Val Grande dates back to 1953. In 1967, the area was designated a Strict Nature Reserve and became the first conservation area with this status in the Italian Alps. In 1974, the Association Italia Nostra developed a detailed plan to establish a national park, and, in the 1980s, the preparation started. The park was established on March 2, 1992. On June 24, 1998 the area of the park was extended.

Tourism

As of 2012, the park had three visitor centers (located in Santa Maria Maggiore, Cossogno, and Premosello-Chiovenda), two museums, and a number of nature itineraries, which should be followed accompanied by a guide.

(Wikipedia)

Here’s my latest gal to move into the Sindy house; – My 1976 Active Ballerina Sindy, another favourite doll from childhood, with that interesting ‘double-cup’ waist and ball-jointed wrists that were on the earlier versions (and yes, I am super careful with dressing and posing her because of those joints!) I love her super pale, almost platinum blonde hair colour and her very sweet face, and even though the seller said otherwise, her ankles still bend perfectly. It’s become an unintentional ritual of mine that if I don’t get a Sindy in her original outfit, her first shot will be wearing that favourite logo T-shirt and some Mix & Match slacks! LOL

She is sitting on the 1977 Scenesetter kitchen stools that I also just got. This set was described in the Pedigree trade catalogue as a “Sindy pocket money play situation”. You probably can’t see it in the photo, but these were detailed with a Sindy “S” logo on the cross-bar supporting the legs. Funtime Sindy in her 1976 ‘Cook In’ outfit and June (redressed in a funkier chocolate brown and sunshine yellow outfit created from items from the 1979 Mix & Match range, with a long chunky knitted wool scarf in her hair that the seller also threw in with the lot) are welcoming the new gal to their house.
