Olive-backed Sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis), Cairns Botanical Gardens, Queensland, Australia
Ebird checklist:
Tiny and active sunbird of forest edges, parks, and gardens; the most common urban sunbird throughout most of its range. Both sexes have a plain olive back, a yellow belly, and white tail edges that are flared out in flight. The male flashes an iridescent blue throat while the female has a yellow throat and eyebrow. Female Brown-throated Sunbird also has a yellow belly, but it is larger with a thicker bill and lacks the Olive-backed’s white tail patches. Only sunbird species in Australia.

Messier 8 and Messier 20 objects, also known as the Lagoon and Trifid nebulae (left and right in the picture respectively) are located in constellation Sagittarius. Both are estimated to be between 4,000 - 6,000 light-years away from us and are classified as emission nebulae. Inside them takes place an active star formation feeded by those huge HII clouds.

Blue-grey gnatcatcher shot in the bushes low to the ground flitting between the branches. My first image of this bird.
The blue-gray gnatcatcher or blue-grey gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) is a very small songbird, 10–13 cm (3.9–5.1 in) in length and weighing only 5–7 g (0.18–0.25 oz). Adult males are blue-gray on the upperparts with white underparts, have a slender dark bill, and a long black tail edged in white. Females are less blue, while juveniles are greenish-gray. Both sexes have a white eye ring.
The blue-gray gnatcatcher's breeding habitat includes open deciduous woods and shrublands in southern Ontario, the eastern and southwestern United States, and Mexico. Though gnatcatcher species are common and increasing in number while expanding to the northeast, it is the only one to breed in Eastern North America. Both parents build a cone-like nest on a horizontal tree branch, and share feeding the young. The incubation period is 13 days for both sexes, and two broods may be raised in a season.
These birds migrate to the southern United States, Mexico, northern Central America-(Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras), Cuba, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Cayman Islands.
They forage actively in trees or shrubs, mainly eating insects, insect eggs and spiders. They may hover over foliage while snatching prey (gleaning), or fly to catch insects in flight (hawking).
The tail is often held upright while defending territory or searching for food.
Mount ASO is an active volcano in the center of Kyushu. Its ancient caldera ranks among the world's largest, with a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over 100 kilometers. During times of heightened volcanic activity, the crater can be off-limits, the ropeway not operating, and the road and walking trail to the crater closed.

Cosmic Webb, meet cosmic web.
Rather than being scattered randomly, galaxies actually gather in clusters and threads stretching across the universe, punctuated by vast voids. This is known as the cosmic web. Now the Webb Telescope has discovered an early strand of this web — 10 galaxies that existed 830 million years after the big bang.
Here, you can see the 10 galaxies marked by 8 white circles in a diagonal, thread-like line. (Two of the circles contain more than one galaxy). Together, these interconnected galaxies form a structure that extends 3 million light years!
The group is also anchored by a luminous quasar — a galaxy with an active, supermassive black hole at its core. (The quasar appears in the middle of the cluster of 3 circles on the right side.) Scientists believe this collection of galaxies may eventually become a galaxy cluster.

Image description: A black field speckled with a variety of galaxies of numerous shapes and sizes. The galaxies are white, yellow, blue and red. Red is the predominant galaxy color in the field, indicating very distant galaxies. Eight small white circles mark the position of 10 galaxies (two circles contain more than one galaxy). The 10 galaxies are arranged in a diagonal, thread-like line from the bottom left to the top right. Most of the white circles are separated. However, there is a pair of circles grouped together on the bottom left, as well as a cluster of three circles on the right side of the image. A quasar called J0305-3150 appears in the middle of that right cluster. Within the quasar’s circle, there are strong red diffraction spikes radiating out from a white core. Galaxies in the other circles are seen only as red specks.

Common Brown Click Beetle, Athous haemorrhoidalis.
Length 10 – 15mm.
Common throughout Britain and widespread across Europe and Asia. Found in grassland, meadows, hedgerows and woodland on various types of vegetation, it is predominantly a lowland species, being entirely absent above 600 m elevation, and becoming steadily scarcer from sea level up to 500 m.
A very distinctive species which is easily recognized in the field. Shiny, the head and pronotum are black, the wing cases contrastingly dark brown. The whole body is covered with greyish-brown hairs. The head is densely punctured and has prominent eyes. The antennae have 11segments, the first broad and curved, the second distinctly shorter than the third which is slightly shorter than the fourth. The legs are a pale brown, (paler than the wing cases), often with darker tibiae, (the fourth segment of the leg). Like other click beetles, the joint between thorax and abdomen forms a flexible hinge and there is a central knob at the back of the thorax. The males are smaller than females.
Like all click beetles, it can flick itself into the air when laid on its back, an action which makes a click sound. The adults ‘click’ readily when handled and are strong fliers.
They are active early in the year, from March or April, when they can be seen basking on low foliage in hedgerows. They soon become abundant and feed on pollen, nectar and emerging foliage. Eggs are laid in late spring in open, well-vegetated soils where the larvae will develop, feeding on plant roots and also other insects. They are known to predate larvae of the Winter moth, Operophtera brumata, and consume dead insects and their larvae.
On agricultural land they can be a serious pests to a range of crops including potatoes, tomatoes and all kinds of cereals.
Strong currents rip through this narrow passage making pleasure boating very challenging. Also the Ferries use this pass so watch out!

With no location on the Isle of Mull being much more than five miles from the sea, and Ben More, its loftiest peak, being
more or less central, it is seen from all angles.
Here, looking north-west, is the view from near Craig at the western end of Glen More.
Ben More is the only “Munro” in a central belt of Mull that contains over 20 peaks that are the stumps of a massive volcano, active 60 million years ago.
Here the peak appears asymmetrical, and yet, five miles west of this spot it appears a perfect pyramidal peak, as fine as any.
The green tussocky grasses, sedges, cotton grass, heathers, mosses and bog plants of the foothills, dykes and valleys
set off the bluey-grey slopes of silica-rich basalt that makes up most of the rocky slopes above 2,500 feet.
The summit at 966 metres (3,169 feet) may not be as high as the mercurial mountains of Skye, but its vistas south are so uninterrupted that parts of Donegal, in Ireland, can be seen 131 miles away on a clear day.
I last climbed Ben More 37 years ago and can vouch for its incredible views.
In fact, it’s about time I climbed it again and added some more shots to the collection.

This particular night was so active, incredibly this is just a 30s shot. The bolts were coming down everywhere. The winds just in front of this system were very strong, at one stage I had to hop into my car, and hope to god my camera rig was sheltered enough not to get knocked over.
Now it's winter, I'm just waiting for next spring-summer so I can get back out into the wheatbelt and beyond.
