Something a little different for me. There was not much colour going on in this image, so i decided to convert to B&W.

I soooo want one of these. What fun!

I was wandering around Show Low Lake a couple days ago, looking for Bald Eagles. I was told there was an eagle nest there. Came back instead with these shots of hummingbirds. Oh well. I was close. I've heard the hummingbird came in as a close second when they were picking our national bird.

When I saw this in my camera, I just flipped out..not really...but it sure was neat to see! Eventhough this photo is not that sharp, its is for sure, good enough to understand what is going on! These birds will not share the food!

Chickadees are entertaining no matter the situation, but it was especially fun watching this guy position, & then re-position, as he fed voraciously on my log feeder. In our backyard in St. Peters, Mo.

Is it just me or has this week just flying by us? I feel as though I said goodbye to my family's home visit and now I find myself at Thursday already. Well, when I really stop to think about it ... how in the world did it get to be the 2nd half of April?

Though it feels as though its summer already (Saturday's high is expected to reach 88 degrees), I have to remember that it still is spring and may even seem like winter in some parts of the US. When I think of spring, one of my favorite things is knowing that I can almost always count on spotting the most agile and acrobatic of all birds ... the swallow-tailed kite.

In Florida, our state bird is the Northern Mockingbird. Yes, you heard me right ... the Northern Mockingbird. I mean ... really? Why could it have not been a bird known only to our state like the Florida Scrub Jay? Or even though its generally a winter/spring visitor, perhaps the iconic and beautiful swallow-tailed kite?

To witness the flight of the STK, is to witness perfection, grace, skillful acrobatics overhead. No other bird flies quite like it. Being in the kite family, it's easy to see why. When I think of kites, you know the ones we played with as children (not the bird), it's that same acrobatic display going on. Flying by at a fast pace, descending at an abrupt and even quicker pace, and cathing thermals which seem to make it disappear in thin air. One of my favorite days every year is my first sighting of the year of the beautiful STK. They seem so free ... so happy ... so skilled, especially when they fly by and in mid-flight are dining on their latest catch. Amazing!

I hope to get out for some local photography over the next week and when I do, I hope to be thrilled by a sighting of the swallow-tailed kite. :-)

Thanks for stopping by to view and especially for sharing your thoughts and comments.

This American Bald Eagle was perched in a tree and he was facing me when I happened upon him. He decided to take flight in the opposite direction that he was facing. I snapped this picture a moment after he jumped off the tree branch and so he is in the middle of righting himself for flight. His head and wings are in the correct position but his talons and tail are still turned up.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great evening!
