Pociunai airfield, Lithuania

A revisit in March 2020 to this site. The site has now been cleared of trees and vegetation, returning it close to the state it would have been when operational. Due to the large amounts of asbestos, the buildings are being slowly dismantled, with the corrugated asbestos sheet being carefully removed from the roofs. The purpose of this visit was to capture the scale of the site, and record construction methods and materials as best as I could.

Locally known as the USAAF hospital, Ullenwood near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire was the site of the 110th General Hospital of the US Army Medical Corps in late 1944. Little other information is available.

A description of the camp exists - "The hospital buildings were of a uniform plan and setup and constructed of hollow tile, roofed with asbestos cement sheets. Adequate space was available for all wards, clinics, and laboratories. The quarters reserved for Officers, Nurses, and the Detachment were all of plaster board covered with tar paper and had asbestos cement roofs."

What remains today is a jumble of contemporary WW2 buildings, largely prefabricated concrete struts with asbestos roofs and clockwork walls that have been used for decades as household storage and small business units. The most interesting and medical related structure to remain is the covered corridor in the centre of the site that would have linked hospital wards.

Temple Newsam House, on the eastern edge of Leeds, from the parterre fountain. The house, part of a 1,500-acre estate and landscaped park, was built between 1500 and 1520 for Thomas Lord Darcy. Sir Arthur Ingram bought the estate for £12,000 in 1622. It has been owned by Leeds City Council since 1922.

cool riad in marrakech!

We had a wonderful experience at this riad! The staff were very friendly and helpful, both pointing us to places and activities in the city and with service around the riad. The food was probably the best we had while in Morocco, although the other places to eat that were recommended to us by the staff were also very good. The atmosphere is really relaxed, and we were made to feel at home. Also worth noting that the location is very good (about five minutes walk from the main square). Will be recommending to family and friends.

Unusually for my digital work, this is SOOC, though I do think it could do with a crop, maybe?

At 20 Thames Tons this is one the larger boats in the Hillyard range yet she keeps the same design format of a centre cockpit, aft cabin, large saloon and further sleeping accommodation forward. Built in 1965 at Littlehampton.

This was the fourth Hillyard for the original owner and he specified some significant improvements on the standard build including teak for the bright work instead of mahogany, perhaps the only post war Hillyard to have this, improved interior joinery and a taller rig for better performance.

Given a major refit in present ownership including new rigging and sails, new engine, complete cosmetic refit and all new equipment. She is now an extremely smart and well found yacht, complete with everything required on a cruising yacht and ready to sail away.

She has a superb sheltered cockpit, not as deep as most Hillyards but far more comfortable making her very safe at sea and a deck saloon with all round visibility and comfortable seating. The ketch rig is easily handled by a small crew and the addition of modern winches and roller furling head sails make life very easy at sea. There are so many features on this boat which make her the ideal cruising yacht which shows that David Hillyard was a very clever yacht designer who was forging ahead in the industry and laying down markers that would last for many years.

A nuclear bunker at the heart of Tbilisi.

After the collapse of the USSR the place was stripped in the 1990s. For some time it was occupied by a number of homeless people and also by illegal drugs manufacturers. A number of barrels that contains desomorphine (or known as 'krokodil') can still be found in the bunker. The bunker was designed to accommodate up to a few thousand people.

Today the bunker lies abandoned under the busiest streets in Tbilisi, with parts of it still being used as a simple storage basement for the city's street cleaners.

El Calafate is a town in Patagonia, Argentina. It is situated in the southern border of Lake Argentino, in the southwest part of the Santa Cruz Province, about 320 km Northwest of Río Gallegos. The name of the city is derived from a little bush with yellow flowers and dark blue berries that is very common in Patagonia: the calafate (Berberis buxifolia).

El Calafate is an important tourist destination as the hub to visit different parts of the Los Glaciares National Park, including the Perito Moreno Glacier and the Cerro Chaltén and Cerro Torre [Wikipedia.org]
