Long unused gas station along a state highway. The pumps are long gone but the island and lamps still stands, its just hidden by grass so its easier to trip over.

A wall with graffiti and politcal slogans at night in San Sebastian, Spain
This photograph is from Donostia San Sebastián, Spain — made during a nighttime walk through a lively district of popular bars, pintxos places, and more. (We are now great fans of the pintxos scene.) Having said that, this particular spot obviously wasn’t the most lively, being in a small square mostly lacking such businesses, but having plenty of interesting forms, lighting, colors and textures.
Back home I often avoid including graffiti in my urban photographs, but here it was hard to avoid and it seemed like an aspect of the place. I think that it was the light, colors, and forms that initially caught my attention, and it wasn’t until we got home and I began to work on these photographs that I looked up a translation of the Basque language slogan on the left door: “Accept what is there or join the fight.”
G Dan Mitchell is a California photographer and visual opportunist. His book, “California’s Fall Color: A Photographer’s Guide to Autumn in the Sierra” is available from Heyday Books, Amazon, and directly from G Dan Mitchell.
The last few weeks has seen a flurry of Olympians moving on, N728LTN went back to Scotland to be a non pcv, S308CCD moved to Crewe as a static plaything, R168VPU is next to go this week. One Olympian which has only moved down the road is G338CSG remaining in the same ownership. Originally at Disley, it moved to New Mills a few weeks back and is much better positioned for a photograph now as the Bohemian cafe. This bus suffered a low bridge incident whilst with another owner and was repaired using a ALX400 roof at the front.
These will be the last photos I post for maybe a couple of weeks, as I am taking a much-needed break!
Three days ago, I was so torn as to whether or not to accept an invite from my friend, Pam, to take a drive SE of the city. I really, really wanted to go, even more so as I have barely been out for ages. However, I am running out of time to get certain things done, and also I was concerned that if I slightly moved in a 'wrong' way, my knees would give way or my rotator cuffs and lower back would become even more painful. Not what I need, especially right now. In the end, I decided that, yes, I would go after all, and I am so glad that I made that decision.
We started off at Frank Lake, a place that is very familiar to both of us. We knew that Western Grebes and Eared Grebes were being seen and we both hoped they would be there that morning. This pair of Eared Grebes gave a little performance of part of their mating dance. Taken with the Nikon B700 - in fact, I gave up using the FZ200 for pretty well all my photos at Frank Lake and just kept my fingers crossed that the new B700 would give me at least a few photos that were good enough to keep. I am still having the problem of image shift on some of the shots - photo jumps upward, downward or to one side, cutting off parts of birds and resulting in ridiculous compositions. At Frank Lake, I could rest both elbows on a very sturdy window ledge, making it impossible for normal, self-created camera shake to happen. Image shift still happened with some of the photos, but not this one.
Though I have quite a few photos of Eared Grebes on my Flickr photostream, I think I only have one previous photo of a Western Grebe. I don't see them very often and when I do, they are so far away. They were far away when we were there, but we were able to watch as they did a bit of their mating dance, including when each bird gathered a beak full of wet, rotting plant material and they went face to face in an amorous gesture. These birds also swam off separately, giving us a few chances for further shots. Still at the blind, we were so lucky when this pair of Eared Grebes came close enough to capture a shot or two of their mating dance. Not the best shots at this location, but I was happy to get anything.
By the way, the blind is surrounded by lake and flood water! Parts of the boardwalk were under 5" or 6" of water, through which we had to wade. If you do go, make sure you concentrate, or you might find yourself swimming in the lake! Elsewhere in the whole SE area, there was a lot of water in some of the fields, creating what I suspect will turn out to be only temporary sloughs.
A few of the other birds we saw two days ago at various places included a few dozen Tundra Swans; plenty of Northern Shovelers; several Western Meadowlarks; a Great Horned Owl and her little white, fuzzy owlet, sitting on a distant nest; and a Ferruginous Hawk female lying down in her nest. Of course, the usual suspects included Canada Geese, Mallards, and so on.
When it came time to leave Frank Lake, I had assumed we would then start on the drive back to the city. Instead, Pam surprised me by saying that we would go further south - and further south we definitely went! Made such a great day. Thanks so much, Pam, for this treat - greatly appreciated.
In late February, Ms. Essay accepted an invitation to lunch made by the St. Louis Gender Foundation’s (StLGF) newsletter editor, Belinda, to share a meal and discuss, among other things, the finalization for distribution of the March issue of our Gazette newsletter.
For that moderately cold but sunny Thursday, Ms. Essay chose to wear her heavyweight black and speckled gray half-sleeve sheath dress with color-matching two-tone pointed toe pumps.
The last time Ms. Essay recalls wearing this dress was back in October 2020 during the COVID pandemic when she decided to get out of the house and take a walk inside an old local semi-deserted shopping mall. Five (5) photos related to that mall walk were uploaded to Flickr and can be found in her album titled, “2020”.
This February 2023 pose shows a frontal view of that two-tone heavyweight half-sleeve dress.

Hello to my favorite group on Flickr! i am sorry i have been a lousy visitor to your photos but things...good things for a change...are happening in my life right now. I need to focus a bit here and see them through, because they are things i have dreamed of for a very long time. I recently have begun to REALLY try hard to make those come true. I seem to be in the right place and at the right time, stars are aligning...reinforcing my idea that i truly was a misplaced southern soul when i was in Jersey. i promise to get back into this, as soon as the dust settles here.
My artistic endeavors are beginning to pay off, and i could not be more excited (or scared!!). i love the thought that people are intrigued and accepting of my art here, and i am getting used to that....now comes the hard part. Stepping out of the teensy tiny comfort zone of being in front of people. I am making slow progress...and it gets a tiny bit easier as i go...but it really does give me pause when i have too much time to anticipate it! I will always be much more comfortable alone, with just with one or two friends or my cats, or books for company. I just need to get to the point that i can self talk myself thru the hopefully limited outings i need to do in front of people!
Thanks in advance for your patience while i make this journey ...i promise i will get back here with the friends and family i have made here...where i am comfortable! (((HUGS)))

A few hours ago I just got the worst news of my life, something I have torn the soul. One of my best friends committed suicide.
Still can not believe it and I think it was all a nightmare. Right now I feel a mixture of shame and anger, I am furious at having been their choice. I guess when you outweigh the problems, if you do not see the easy way out. But I keep wondering if I did my best and if I could help in some way, I miss you very much and I keep remembering all the times we spent together, both for good and for bad.
I'm tired to cry, to mourn and to hit the table, now I just have to accept it and resign, even though I have the certainty that this does not end here.
It was a lovely girl full of energy, you could talk to her about anything, he was a tremendously intelligent.
She was not prepared to live in this society, neither in this world as we know it.
I could not stand such injustice and believed in a borderless world, used to say that money was one of the great evils of this world and all these situations would have to be destroyed and replaced by ones that really make this world a place " free "in every way, where love stood out above all in his head was still making his ideal world as a means of escape, he questioned everything I could tell .... But that was not enough and really wanted that world he kept in his head based on ideas and thoughts come true.
From rebellious spirit and endowed with great character, could not take no for an answer, one that does not come from the depths of this infinite universe.
How I miss you dear friend, I hope that when we meet again either in this world, in this physical plane and get my life back, as a new member in my family, as the neighbor across or as you agreed in your Book of life.
With these words I do not want to tie you to me, on the contrary wish to continue your journey and follow evolving. Sure you still have much to learn and to teach those who need it.
With these words I just want to show my love and affection. This is not a goodbye or anything, we could leave it in a "goodbye".
Sorry
Forgive
Thanks
I love you

"I just wanted to tell you how grateful I am that you've accepted me despite my blunders. It is good to once again be among friends. You, Quill, are my friend. This dumb tree is also my friend. And this green whore is also... "
When watching Guardians of The Galaxy, Drax became one of my favorite characters , in the whole Marvel Universe! So I wanted to do his outfit before they all got their new suits.
I have to be honest this figure isn't anything exciting, and I used sharpie,I used silver and a black sharpie pen and that was really all I used. I tried to make this as accurate as possible, I honestly don't know why others make the top of his pants grey when it really doesn't look like that, I based it off this picture: vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/marvelmovies/images/2/27/Dra... . I put as much as I could onto the small legs I was working with and it came out fine if I do say so. The knifes TLG gave were a little bland so I put in some small detail and made the knifes silver and that is really all I have to say about that. Overall I actually really like how this came out.
BTW I want to make more Super Hero minifigures and so this is the start, I plan to make Gamora, Ant-Man, Yellow Jacket, Daredevil, and maybe Gaslight Batman. But I will also be making other stuff I want to make as well.
What do you think!?

The universally accepted NATO phonetic alphabet has G for Golf. Some variations exist but there it is! So George, rest well in your slumbers at the Scarborough (Queensland) Marina but I am not budging on this!
Personally, I find the phonetic alphabet wonderful when talking to those contact centres in far off lands, helps get you out of all sorts of language problems.
There are many sites on the internet but I found this one to be nice and straight forward.
Who we are as people, as individuals, has nothing to do with the way we look. However, how many times have we deduced and passed judgment based upon just that? We see someone walk past us and think to ourselves either that they look like a nice person and therefore we have nothing to fear. Or we think that they look a bit different, a bit odd and therefore we have a lot to fear. The truth is this…we cannot look at someone and determine their personality. We cannot purely look upon them and come to the conclusion that they are kind or not.
The truth is this; it does not matter what colours we wear. It does not matter what fashion style we choose to follow. It does not matter if we choose to ink our skin or not. It does not matter if we have piercings or not. It does not matter if we are light or dark skinned. It does not matter if we have long hair or short, or no hair at all. It does not matter if our eyes are blue, or brown or any other colour. It does not matter for beneath the superficial surface, beneath all that we allow the world to see, it is that what makes us the people we are. It is the way of our hearts, it is our thoughts, and it is our feeling and emotions. To strip back the layers and to see beneath our outer shells, to see the thing which above all others we can call ourselves. To see that, is to know who we are.

The morning of February 14 dawned cold and quiet. Early in the afternoon a furious roar broke the stillness, and the earth began to shake. Andrew H. Foote's Union gunboat fleet, consisting of the ironclads St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Carondolet, and the timberclads Conestoga and Tyler, had arrived from Fort Henry via the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers and were exchanging "iron valentines" with the eleven big guns in the Southern water batteries. During this one and one-half hour duel the Confederates wounded Foote and inflicted such extensive damage upon the gunboats that they were forced to retreat. The hills and hollows echoed with cheers from the southern soldiers.
The Confederate generals-John Floyd, Gideon Pillow, Simon Buckner and Bushrod Johnson-also rejoiced; but sober reflection revealed another danger. Grant was receiving reinforcements daily and had extended his right flank almost to Lick Creek to complete the encirclement of the Southerners. If the Confederates did not move quickly, they would be starved into submission. Accordingly, they massed their troops against the Union right, hoping to clear a route to Nashville and safety. Both Confederate and Union soldiers fought furiously on the morning of February 15; the Union Army grudgingly retreated by the afternoon. Just as it seemed the way was clear, the Southern troops were ordered to return to their entrenchments-a result of confusion and indecision among the Confederate commanders. Grant immediately launched a vigorous counterattack, retaking most of the lost ground and gaining new positions as well. The way of escape was closed once more.
Floyd and Pillow turned over command of Fort Donelson to Buckner and slipped away to Nashville with about 2,000 men. Others followed cavalryman Lt. Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest across swollen Lick Creek. That morning, February 16, Buckner asked Grant for terms. Grant's answer was short and direct: "No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted." Buckner surrendered.
Soon after the surrender, civilians and relief agencies rushed to assist the Union Army. The U.S. Sanitary Commission was one of the first to provide food, medical supplies, and hospital ships to transport the wounded. Many civilians came in search of loved ones or to offer support. Although not officially recognized as nurses, women such as Mary Bickerdyke and Mary Newcomb, cared for and comforted sick and wounded soldiers.
With the capture of Fort Donelson and its sister fort, Henry, the North had not only won its first great victory, it had also gained a new hero--"Unconditional Surrender" Grant, who was promoted to major general. Subsequent victories at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga would lead to his appointment as lieutenant general and commander of all Union Armies. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox would send Grant to the White House.
After the fall of Fort Donelson, the South was forced to give up southern Kentucky and much of Middle and West Tennessee. The Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, and railroads in the area, became vital Federal supply lines. Nashville was developed into a huge supply depot for the Union army in the west. The heartland of the Confederacy was opened, and the Federals would press on until the "Union" became a fact once more.
"Fort Donelson will hereafter be marked in Capitals on the maps of our United Country..."
~Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant was becoming quite famous as he wrote these words following the surrender of Confederate Fort Donelson on Sunday, February 16, 1862. The Union victory at Fort Donelson elated the North, and stunned the South. Within days of the surrender, Clarksville and Nashville would fall into Union hands. Grant and his troops had created a pathway to victory for the Union.

I had a hard time accepting using a strong Rodinal dilution for a fast film. But pressed for time and remembering the excellent results I got from pushing Bergger Pancro 400 using Rodinal I went for it anyways. And the results, well they speak for themselves. Sure there's a tad more visible grain, but it adds to that beautiful edge sharpness and the contrast is on point adding to the overall sharpness. Certainly is a winning combination.
