Abstraction in psychology Carl Jung's definition of abstraction broadened its scope beyond the thinking process to include exactly four mutually exclusive, opposing complementary psychological functions: sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking.

Together they form a structural totality of the differentiating abstraction process. Abstraction operates in one of these opposing functions when it excludes the simultaneous influence of the other functions and other irrelevancies, such as emotion. Abstraction requires selective use of this structural split of abilities in the psyche. The opposite of abstraction is concretism.

There is an abstract thinking, just as there is abstract feeling, sensation and intuition. Abstract thinking singles out the rational, logical qualities ... Abstract feeling does the same with ... its feeling-values. ... I put abstract feelings on the same level as abstract thoughts. ... Abstract sensation would be aesthetic as opposed to sensuous sensation and abstract intuition would be symbolic as opposed to fantastic intuition. (Jung, [1921] (1971):par. 678).

Lichens. abstractions. Endless pattern. Different but the same.

This is on a basalt rock about 2m by 1m and about 80cm high, sitting among Chinochloa tussock grassland and Phormium flax on the top ridge line between Flagstaff and Swampy. Very humid, very often foggy, covered in clouds. These lichens (or thier ancestors) have (presumably) been 'fighting' for real estate on this rock since the last ice age.

It can also be part of Macro Mondays' theme of the week : hair.

That was a big day. I was invited to wedding in Bellshill, near to Glasgow as a photographer. I did my best, I can see there is still a lot to improve, but anyway, I started working for my professional portfolio! Here is one of my shots, I was playing with a piece of material which supposed to be a fake fire.

A quick trip to Paintworks, Bristol to see the excellent members exhibition at the RPS headquarters. Also had a chance to grab a few abstract minimalist shots in between the showers.

Started reading Bloke by Bruce Pascoe yesterday. Seems it's quickly taken effect.

Fishing nets on the quayside look like a fiery monster filled with energy and movement.

I spent the day looking for abstract forms in the architecture. This was probably the best I found.
