One of a series of images making compositional abstractions from various "straight shots" of fire. The colour in the flames were not added by any effects program but are the result of some magical little tablets that you throw into a fire to change the natural colours.
As far as processing goes, all I did was use a mirror function and a bit of warping to slightly off-balance the exact symmetry of the mirrored image. Some bumping up of the colour saturation and that was it. I felt the shapes, colours and textures were interesting enough not to interfere with their natural beauty very much at all.
The series is dedicated to E. Paul Thomson, a life-long friend who passed away Oct 10, 2013. Campfires were a deeply impactful and endearing experience in our lives. They were the deep core events of our close-knit social circle, all of us having lived round them as children, teens and young adults. Many of our fires are the stuff of legend now and Paul was always at the heart of these fires.
For each of the fire images of this series I am linking up music that was dear to us as we sat around such fires and imagined, raconteured, laughed and philosophized. One of our favourite campfire rituals was a group performance / improv of Pink Floyd's "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict". Our improved interpretations of the infamous Roger Waters piece would frequently venture into some very crazy territory and would quite often sound like several species of LARGE "furry animals gathered together". In the end though it was up to me to stand as the "animals" reached a fury and I would fan the flames of the bonfire, sending sparks up into the night, and launch into the pseudo Gealic rant that closes the piece. Everyone would join in for the last line... "and the wind cried Mary".
Music Link: Pink Floyd, "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict". From their album, "Ummagumma" ( 1969 ). An incredible piece of "musique concret", tape manipulation by Roger Waters. This is the original.

“There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward you can remove all traces of reality.”

One of the weaknesses of much abstract painting is the attempt to substitute the inventions of the intellect for a pristine imaginative conception. The inner life of a human being is a vast and varied realm and does not concern itself alone with stimulating arrangements of color, form and design. The term 'life' as used in art is something not to be held in contempt, for it applies all of its existence, and the province of art is to react to it and not to shun it. Painting will have to deal more fully and less obliquely with life and nature's phenomena before it can again be great.
