This photograph was made on a sunrise using a telephoto lens. The clouds were very interesting that day. Rays of the rising sun emphasised clouds and jet streams.

Whenever I watch a nature documentary, I'm fascinated by how the animals, plants, and geology of a certain area have inspired ancient culture. You see suggestions in the traditional clothing and architecture, hinting back to what occurred by chance. I've seen indigenous artwork that's reminiscent of this ice formation, so it makes me curious if it could have a connection. Sights like these make me see a different perspective on abstraction. I've never been much for the modern notion of randomness on canvas – I prefer the abstract in geological patterns, crystalline formations, deeply rooted feelings found underfoot. The story in being there always moves me most. The sensation of bare skin on solid ice, slick and cold, totally tied to my surroundings. Blurring the line between simply being out in nature, and being part of it.

This series of images was taken on visits to the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California over an eight year period.

I usually find this type of modern architecture sterile, but here the architect Richard Meier created spaces that are not only pleasant to be in but include interesting lines, windows, angles, curves, and textures in almost every view. Looking abstractly at these details reveals patterns that capture my eye as a photographer, and as many visual artists know, once you notice something like this, it's hard to let go of it. I continue to visit the Getty and add to this collection.

The sun was twinkling on the water in the inner harbour reflecting the buildings and the boats making quite vibrant, beautiful abstracts. The tiny leaves just added to my art work.
