The 2nd in a small series taking a 'straight shot' of a Cabbagetown Fence and digitally manipulating the image with colour treatments and effects. The effects are done is such as way as to maintain the incredible detailing of the old wood and the crumbling, poorly-done paint job.
Again, this image got me thinking about the work of Barnett Newman and his epic-sized horizontal paintings with their vertical "zips". Here the colour scheme seems to suggest a vague connection with his painting, "Cathedra". While not trying to overtly create a Newman, I am letting his influence flow through and inform my work. Good old Barney would not have liked all this detail and colour play !!!!!

Oil on Canvas. 2022. "The river Styx". 18in by 21.5inch.
I felt the need to do something a little looser after my last painting.
I went in search of ice yesterday and found some delicious specimens, but as I was leaving the canyon, the reflections of the sun-lit red rock walls reflected in a small pool caught my eye. If I moved to the opposite side of the pool to rid the image of my shadow, I lost the reflection, so I included the shadow with the intention of cropping or erasing it out.
This morning, I started playing around with the twisting and stretching of my shadow into unrecognizable shapes and sizes - something I have spent an inordinate amount of time at psychologically in the past - until this little gem stepped out of my manipulations and into its own becoming.
These beauties greet me every morning when I step out my back door. They are volunteers and move around the flower beds at their whim.
My nu friend Mary is an award-winning local Artist who also happens to be da most beautiful 70 yrs old women I ever met.

A very old wooden cupboard door being stripped of ancient layers of paint and varnish, transforming it into a gallery-quality artwork.
Homage to Marcel Duchamp.

This man has trekked over mountains, through deserts, through jungles, and across great expanses of country. Sometimes running, sometimes with his dog, sometimes with me or others, mostly alone. Even when the wind is howling with snow blowing sideways, he's out with the elements.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

Several years ago, I went on a poetry writing retreat/river trip. One of the writing prompts was: face your enemy, i.e. write about what antagonizes, haunts, or irritates. Recently, I have been applying that tactic to specular highlights, the bugaboo of photographers who dare to photograph in the light of day. Instead of cursing those sparkling nuisances, I've decided to play with them.

I'm drawn to Mark Rothko color field paintings. For this shot I used a square glass vase in which I put a bottle of mouthwash(blue/green) and a small orange spray bottle. I placed a violet-colored piece of acrylic in front of half the vase. In post I used a slight color vignette and drop-shadow frame.
From MOMA - Mark Rothko sought to make paintings that would bring people to tears. “I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions—tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on,” he declared. “And the fact that a lot of people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate those basic human emotions….If you…are moved only by their color relationships, then you miss the point.”

Initially I did not notice the two faces, “Beauty and The Beast”, which I have now labeled.
Influenced by the bold authoritative AB-EX work of Franz Klein I moved in closer and closer.
