Tips to avoid a hangover

 

Follow these tips to keep hangovers at bay:

 

Don't drink on an empty stomach. Before you go out, have a meal that includes carbohydrates (such as pasta or rice) or fats. The food will help slow down the body's absorption of alcohol.

 

Don't drink dark-coloured drinks if you've found that you're sensitive to them. They contain natural chemicals called congeners (impurities), which irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain and can make a hangover worse.

 

Drink water or non-fizzy soft drinks in between each alcoholic drink. Carbonated (fizzy) drinks speed up the absorption of alcohol into your system.

 

Drink a pint or so of water before you go to sleep. Keep a glass of water by the bed to sip if you wake up during the night.

The morning after

 

If you wake up the next morning feeling terrible, you probably didn't follow this advice. Although there are no real cures for hangovers, there are ways to ease the symptoms.

 

Treatment involves rehydrating the body so it can deal with the painful symptoms, though the best time to rehydrate is before going to sleep.

 

Over-the-counter painkillers can help with headaches and muscle cramps. Paracetamol-based remedies are usually preferable, as aspirin may further irritate the stomach and increase nausea and sickness.

 

Sugary foods may help you feel less trembly. In some cases, an antacid may be needed to settle your stomach first.

 

Bouillon soup, a thin vegetable-based broth, is a good source of vitamins and minerals, which can top up depleted resources. Its main advantage is it's easy for a fragile stomach to digest.

 

You can replace lost fluids by drinking bland liquids that are easy on the digestive system, such as water, soda water and isotonic drinks (available in most shops).

 

"Hair of the dog" – drinking more alcohol – does not help. Drinking in the morning is a risky habit, and you may simply be delaying the appearance of symptoms until the alcohol wears off again.

 

If you've had a heavy drinking episode, hangover or not, doctors advise that you wait at least 48 hours before drinking any more alcohol to give your body tissues time to recover.

 

Sometimes, of course, a hangover makes that advice easier to follow.

Once upon a time this was Britain's most popular passenger aircraft, even going so far as to make it big in America and behind the Iron Curtain. Today, the plucky BAC 1-11 has long since passed into history, but its legacy as one of the UK aviation industry's last hurrahs lives on.

 

The BAC 1-11's roots stretch back to the 1950's following the disastrous crashes of the pioneering de Havilland Comet. Britain's aviation industry had been rocked to its core by the incidents and needed to get back on its feet quick before the United States and other European manufacturers dominated the market. At the time, the Comet and following Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8, though extremely popular, only focused on long-haul routes, with a large gap in the market for a short-haul jet airliner to replace the turboprops.

 

As such, in July 1956, British European Airways (BEA) outlined plans for a new short-haul jet airliner that was open for tender among Britain's aviation manufacturers. Hunting Aircraft started design studies on a jet-powered replacement for the successful Vickers Viscount, developing the 30-seat Hunting 107. Around the same time, Vickers started a similar development of a 140-seat derivative of its VC10 project, the VC11. Many other aviation firms had also produced their own designs.

 

In 1960 Hunting, under British government pressure, merged with Vickers-Armstrongs, Bristol, and English Electric to form the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC). The newly formed BAC decided that the Hunting project had merit, but that there would be little market for a 30-seat jet airliner. The design was reworked into the BAC 107, a 59-seat airliner powered by two 7,000lbf Bristol Siddeley BS75 turbofan engines. BAC also continued development of the larger, 140-seat VC-11 development of the Vickers VC10 which it had inherited. Other competing internal projects, such as the Bristol Type 200, were quickly abandoned following the absorption of Hunting into BAC.

 

Market research showed that the 59-seat BAC 107 was still too small, and the design was again reworked in 1961, with passenger capacity growing to 80 seats, and the BS75's being discarded in favour of Rolls-Royce Speys. The revised design was redesignated the BAC 111 (later becoming known as the 1-11), with BAC abandoning the VC11 project to concentrate on the more promising 1-11. Unlike other contemporary British airliners such as the Hawker Siddeley Trident, the 1-11 was not designed to specifically meet the needs of the state-owned British European Airways or British Overseas Airways Corporation, but on the needs of airlines around the world, and BAC expected that they could receive orders for as many as 400 aircraft. Test flying was conducted by Squadron Leader Dave Glaser.

 

The aircraft was officially launched on May 9th, 1961, when British United Airways (BUA) placed the first order for ten 1-11 200's. Completely out of the blue however came the Americans, with Braniff International Airways ordering six, followed by Mohawk Airlines with four. Other orders followed from Kuwait Airways for three, and Central African Airways for two. Braniff subsequently doubled their order to 12, while Aer Lingus ordered four. Western Airlines ordered ten aircraft but later cancelled. As can be expected though, the idea of American carriers buying non-American products left a sour taste in the U.S. Government, who attempted to ban the nation's airlines from buying the BAC 1-11. The U.S. Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), claimed that subsidies would be needed to operate a jet on the routes operated by American airline Bonanza (who had ordered three 1-11's, an action which was claimed by some at the time to be protectionism. The CAB also stopped Frontier Airlines and Ozark Air Lines from ordering 1-11's, although allowing Ozark to order the similar Douglas DC-9 and Frontier to order Boeing 727-100's. The CAB had also unsuccessfully tried to block Mohawk's orders. The biggest slap in the face to CAB was when American Airlines, the U.S. national carrier, purchased thirty BAC 1-11 400's, something that probably drove the CAB insane!

 

The prototype (G-ASHG) rolled out of the Hurn assembly hall on the 28th July 1963, and carried out its first flight on the 20th August the same year. The first flight had taken place almost a year before the Douglas DC-9, a rival American jetliner; BAC considered the BAC to hold a technological edge. The 1-11's lead was of significant importance commercially, since, as shown by the Bonanza Air Lines case, US authorities could refuse to approve sales of foreign aircraft to domestic airlines where an American alternative existed.

 

The first 1-11 was handed over to BUA on January 22nd, 1965, and after weeks of training and route familiarization, made its first revenue earning flight from London Gatwick to Genoa on April 9th. Braniff took delivery of its first aircraft on 11th March, while Mohawk received its first on 15th May. Deliveries continued, and by the end of 1965 airlines had received 34 aircraft. Such was the popularity that a second production line had to be setup at the Vickers factory in Weybridge.

 

The original 1-11 was followed by the 1-11 500 in 1967, the largest variant of the type with 119 seats and stretched by 8ft 4in. The wing span was increased by 5 ft, and the latest Mk. 512 version of the Spey was used. The new version sold reasonably well across the world, particularly to European charter airlines. In 1971 it received an incremental upgrade to reduce drag and reduce runway requirements.

 

However, by far the most interesting version of the BAC 1-11 was the license built Romanian derivative known as the ROMBAC 1-11. Requested by Romanian president Nicolae Ceauşescu himself, the 1-11 was to be built under license by Romania for use as government aircraft and for national carrier TAROM. The 1-11 had previously been very popular with the Romanian national carrier, being used on a variety of the airline's domestic and international routes. The tender was put out in 1979, and construction of the first aircraft was completed in 1982, the same year production of the original British 1-11 was concluded. Eventually, 9 ROMBAC 1-11's were built when production was finished in 1989, with the 10th and 11th examples being abandoned before construction was complete. Though it was intended that more were to be built, the ROMBAC 1-11's failure for mass-production was due largely to Romania's frail economy and restrictions for nations outside the Iron Curtain to assist.

 

The BAC 1-11 remained popular in both Europe and the United States well into the 1980's and even the 1990's, with airlines such as Ryanair and British Airways continuing to use them. Eventually, the Stage III noise abatement regulations, which came into effect from March 2003, meant that the 1-11 was out of favour with this new legislation, and almost overnight the aircraft disappeared from European skies. This wasn't the end though as African and Asian operators made extensive use of the former European examples. As of 2016, only two aircraft were still in service used by Northrop Grumman as airborne test beds for the F-35 programme.

 

However, like many other aircraft, the BAC 1-11 has had its fair share of tragic accidents. In total, the aircraft suffered 12 incidents, including 11 hull losses and the deaths of 389 people both aboard and on the ground. However, none of these incidents was related to a design flaw in the aircraft itself, being attributed to bad weather or poor maintenance.

 

The first fatal crash happened on the 6th August, 1966, when Braniff Airways Flight 250 was torn apart by a thunderstorm near Falls City, Nebraska, killing all 38 passengers and crew.

 

Another notable crash was Paninternational Flight 112 on September 6th, 1971, which suffered multiple engine failure after departure from Hamburg due to incorrect preparation of the aircraft. The 1-11 attempted to land on the A7 Autobahn but crashed into an overpass, killing 22 of the 121 people aboard.

 

Perhaps the most famous incident involving a 1-11 was that of British Airways Flight 5390 on June 10th, 1990. After improper maintenance the previous night, the portside cockpit window blew out during flight, sucking the flight's captain, Captain Tim Lancaster, partially out of the cockpit. His feet however became caught on the yoke which stopped him from being taken away to his death, but instead left him pinned on the roof of the 1-11's cockpit, whilst also forcing the aircraft into a nosedive. The several passengers and flight attendants held his legs until the co-pilot made a successful emergency landing at Southampton. Captain Lancaster suffered frostbite, bruising and shock, and fractures to his right arm, left thumb and right wrist, but eventually made a full recovery.

 

However, the worst 1-11 crash happened much more recently than some, and was largely attributed to being the reason why no more continue to fly in commercial service. On May 4th, 2002, EAS Airlines Flight 4226 crashed in a suburb of Kano, Nigeria shortly after takeoff, killing 71 of the 77 people on board and 78 more on the ground. Following an investigation by the Nigerian Minister of Aviation, the cause of the crash was ruled to be pilot error. The findings of the investigation stated the engines failed following their intake of a large amount of dust. This occurred as a result of the pilot overshooting the runway and continuing the take-off through a grassy area at the end of the runway.

 

Today, 10 BAC 1-11's are on display around the world in varying conditions. 6 are in the UK, 3 are in Argentina and one is in the United States.

 

Today, the BAC 1-11 is remembered fondly by most as a truly revolutionary yet simple little plane that kept the British aviation industry alive into the 1980's. A compact build, some good performance and a loving style made this the most popular British export until the BAe-146 came along in 1984. I personally adore the BAC 1-11 in all its incarnations, a truly beautiful little plane and a testament to British engineering.

This experiment demonstrates the shift in color from yellow-green to blue-green in aqueous solutions of pyranine when made acidic.

 

The fluid from a yellow hi-liter pen was removed and mixed with water (shown in the center test tube). The left test tube contains that solution with 1 drop of muriatic acid added. The test tube on the right contains the solution with 5 drops of a sodium hydroxide solution.

 

The pH of the left test tube was ~1 and the right test tube ~14. It was hard to measure the pH of the solutions since it dyed the pH indicator paper yellow.

 

Upon adding the drop of acid to the pyranine solution, it changed from yellow green to clear. This was because the pyranine had been protonated (provided a hydrogen ion) which reduced the absorption of light at 450nm.

A first color film with my Zorki 1 type D (year 1955) and its normal lens Industar-22 1:3.5 f=5cm in Lyon, France, January 18 and 19, 2023

 

The Zorki was loaded with a 36-exposure Fujifilm Superia X-Tra 400 exposed for 400 ISO.

 

For this film the Industar-22 lens was equipped with a 36mm push-on "1A" (likely the so-called "Skylight") filter and unknown brand (not FOCA) and a generic metal cylindric shade hood.

 

Expositions were determined using a Minolta Autometer III with a 10° finder for selective measurements privileging the shadow areas. The possible slight absorption of the 1A filter was not corrected.

After exposure, the film was processed by a local lab service using the C-41 process.

 

The film was then digitalized using a Sony A7 body adapted to a Minolta Auto Bellows III and a Minolta Slide Duplicator using a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5 at a reproduction ratio of 1:1. The reproduced RAW files obtained were processed in LR prior the the final JPEG editions.

 

All views of the film are presented in the dedicated album either in the printed framed versions and unframed full-size jpeg.

 

About the camera and the lens:

 

This camera is a practically mint sample of Zorki 1 arrived to me in Lyon, France, January 10, 2023.

 

The camera looked exiting from the KMZ factory in USSR almost 70 years later spent in a time capsule ... with almost no traces of use. According to a custom receipt of July 28, 1955, signed in Vienna, Austria, the camera body and lens are the original matched ones. As for the original FED, FED-Zorki and Zorki's ("ФЭД", "ФЭД-Зоркий", „Зоркий“), the Zorki 1 was a straight legal copy of the Oskar Barnack Leica II after the cancelation of German camera patents following the end of WWII.

 

This Zorki 1 is a type D model PM1115 (year 1955 according sovietcams.com/index7584.html). Type D Zorki's were produced from 1953 to 1955 in about 250.000 units with serial numbers ranging from #470.000 to (in 1955) #55 45.000. The original lens of this Zorki units is an collapsible lens Industar-22 1:3.5 f=5cm.

 

In the rear pocket of the ever-ready leather bag was deposited the custom receipt and a film label of Agfa negative-color CN17 likely from the 60's.

The bottom spectrum shows lines in black and diffuse bands in grey as they would appear in the spectroscope.

 

In the top spectrum, the telluric features are coded in blue (for water vapour absorption), red (for diatomic oxygen) and brown (for tetra-oxygen).

 

A few of the strong Solar Fraunhofer lines are shown in black and marked with their designations (C – h) in black letters.

 

Greek(alpha) marks the combination of ordinary diatomic oxygen absorption and a broader contribution from the collisionally induced transition in the transitory association of two oxygen molecules called tetra-oxygen. Greek(delta) marks the strongest visible tetra-oxygen absorption at ~576nm.

 

'r' marks the water absorption that was known in the late nineteenth century as The Rainband since there were attempts to use it as a predictor of rain.

 

These three features along with the water band that encompasses the H-alpha line 'Fraunhofer C' are the most visually prominent telluric features.

 

I find it interesting that two of these features are associated with an absorption process that was not identified until 1949 ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collision-induced_absorption_and_em... ).

 

The 19th century scientists had appreciated that these two bands behaved differently from the water absorptions and became stronger more rapidly as the Sun approached the horizon. However, they had no idea what caused them.

 

The yellow gap between r and delta appears as a very prominent structure in the visible spectrum of the daytime sky, particularly at dusk and dawn.. The yellow almost looks as if it is an emission band superimposed on the Solar spectrum!

 

The coloured background spectrum in these illustrations is derived from my own photograph, taken with a full-spectrum digital camera, of a dispersed quartz-halogen lamp using a slit and a 60° glass prism.

One of the easiest methods for dyeing flowers is to use the absorption method. Fill a large plastic vases with water along with food coloring. Freshly cut stems rest in the colored water, and, after a few hours of drinking, the flowers display different colors.

Medabil Sistemas Construtivos S.A. – (São Paulo, Brazil)

 

Located in the fastest growing business region of São Paulo, Brazil, the WTorre Morumbi is the largest corporate building in Brazil. With a modern and innovative design, it has two towers of 38 floors each, with a central span of 35 meters in length interconnected through five suspended walkways. The structure of the WTorre Morumbi building consists of two structural systems, the first being responsible for the horizontal stability and the second used to ensure the absorption of gravitational load.

 

Medabil Sistemas Construtivos was contracted to develop the structural design of the WTorre Morumbi. Using RAM software, the entire project was developed and using a BIM methodology and then shared by IFC files. The team exported the RAM model for the structural calculation of the building and imported it into SDS/2. A 65 percent reduction in design time on the basic and detailed design and a 50 percent reduction in project costs increased project ROI.

This is the architectural famous Hellerup School (Skole) in Denmark. It is wholly open plan, with massive of acoustic absorption, and children enjoy a more "fluid" approach to teaching, than perhaps would suit traditionalists.

Le 11 mars, je suis sorti de chez moi, à Yokohama, un peu avant 15 heures. Je me suis rendu à Tokyo, pour passer trois ou quatre jours dans un hôtel, ce que je fais chaque semaine pour écrire, rassembler des informations et m’occuper de mes affaires. Le séisme a frappé au moment où j’entrais dans ma chambre. Redoutant de me retrouver pris sous les décombres, je me suis saisi d’un bidon d’eau, d’une boîte de biscuits et d’une bouteille de cognac, et j’ai plongé sous le robuste bureau. En y repensant, je ne crois pas que j’aurais eu le temps de savourer une dernière gorgée de cognac si les trente étages de l’hôtel s’étaient effondrés autour de moi. Mais le simple fait d’avoir adopté ces modestes contremesures m’a permis d’éviter la panique.

 

Peu après, un message d’alerte résonnait dans les haut-parleurs : “Cet hôtel est conçu conformément à des normes antisismiques rigoureuses. Le bâtiment ne risque absolument pas de s’écrouler. Veuillez ne pas tenter de quitter le bâtiment.” Cette annonce a été répétée à plusieurs reprises. Au début, je me suis demandé si c’était vrai. La direction ne cherchait-elle pas seulement à rassurer les gens ? Et c’est là que, sans vraiment y réfléchir, j’ai adopté l’attitude qui, fondamentalement, reste la mienne face à ce genre de situation. Pour l’heure, du moins, j'ai décidé de croire ce que diraient les gens et les institutions disposant de meilleures informations et de davantage de connaissances que moi. J'ai voulu croire que l’immeuble ne s’effondrerait pas. Et il ne s’est pas effondré.

 

On dit souvent des Japonais qu’ils obéissent fidèlement aux règles du “groupe”, qu’ils savent mettre en place des systèmes d’entraide face à l’adversité. On peinerait à le démentir aujourd’hui. Les courageuses opérations de sauvetage se poursuivent jour et nuit, et aucun pillage n’a été signalé. Mais loin du regard du groupe, nous avons tendance à nous comporter en égoïstes — presque par rébellion. Et nous en subissons aussi les conséquences aujourd’hui : des produits de première nécessité comme le riz, l’eau et le pain ont disparu des supermarchés et des épiceries. Les stations d’essence sont à sec. Pris de panique, les gens achètent et stockent. Le sentiment de loyauté envers le groupe est mis à l’épreuve.

 

Pour l’instant, toutefois, c’est la crise des réacteurs nucléaires à Fukushima qui suscite nos plus grandes inquiétudes. Les informations affluent, confuses et contradictoires. Certains disent que la situation est pire qu’à Three Mile Island, mais pas aussi grave qu’à Tchernobyl. D’autres affirment que des vents chargés d’iode radioactif se dirigent vers Tokyo, que tout le monde devrait rester chez soi et manger des algues en grande quantité, car elles sont riches en iode inoffensif, ce qui permet d’empêcher l’absorption d’éléments radioactifs. Un ami américain m’a conseillé de me réfugier dans l’Ouest du Japon. Des gens partent de Tokyo, mais la plupart restent. “Il faut que je travaille, disent les uns. J’ai mes amis, ici, et mes animaux.” Les autres raisonnent : “Même si ça devient une catastrophe de type Tchernobyl, Fukushima est à 250 kilomètres de Tokyo.”

 

Mes parents vivent à Kyushu, dans l’ouest, mais je n’ai pas l’intention de les rejoindre. Je veux rester ici, aux côtés de ma famille, de mes amis, et de toutes les victimes du désastre. D’une certaine façon, je veux leur donner du courage, comme eux m’en donnent. Pour le moment, je veux m’en tenir à l’attitude que j’ai adoptée dans ma chambre d’hôtel. Je vais croire les déclarations de gens et d’institutions mieux informés, surtout les scientifiques, les médecins et les ingénieurs dont je lis les explications sur Internet. Il y a dix ans, j’ai écrit un roman [kibo no kuni no ekusodasu, exode vers le pays de l'espoir, inédit en français] dans lequel un collégien, s'adressant au Parlement, lançait : “Ce pays a tout. Ici, on peut trouver tout ce qu’on veut. La seule chose qui manque, c’est l’espoir.” Aujourd’hui, on pourrait dire le contraire : les centres d’évacuation sont confrontés à de graves pénuries de nourriture, d’eau et de médicaments. On manque aussi de vivres et d’électricité dans la région de Tokyo. Notre mode de vie est menacé. Le gouvernement et les services publics n’ont pas réagi comme il convenait.

 

Mais en dépit de tout ce que nous avons perdu, nous, les Japonais, avons retrouvé une chose, l’espoir. Le grand tremblement de terre et le tsunami nous ont privé de bien des vies et de bien des ressources. Mais nous, qui étions si ivres de notre propre prospérité, avons replanté le ferment de l’espoir. Voilà pourquoi j'ai choisi de croire.

I wanted to share with you these beautiful words written by the successful writer Murakami Ryu

  

I  SET out from my home in the port city of Yokohama early in the afternoon last Friday, and shortly before 3 p.m. I checked into my hotel in the Shinjuku neighborhood of Tokyo. I usually spend three or four days a week there to write, gather material and take care of other business.

 

The earthquake hit just as I entered my room. Thinking I might end up trapped beneath rubble, I grabbed a container of water, a carton of cookies and a bottle of brandy and dived beneath the sturdily built writing desk. Now that I think about it, I don’t suppose there would have been time to savor a last taste of brandy if the 30-story hotel had fallen down around me. But taking even this much of a countermeasure kept sheer panic at bay.

 

Before long an emergency announcement came over the P.A. system: “This hotel is constructed to be absolutely earthquake-proof. There is no danger of the building collapsing. Please do not attempt to leave the hotel.” This was repeated several times. At first I wondered if it was true. Wasn’t the management merely trying to keep people calm?

 

And it was then that, without really thinking about it, I adopted my fundamental stance toward this disaster: For the present, at least, I would trust the words of people and organizations with better information and more knowledge of the situation than I. I decided to believe the building wouldn’t fall. And it didn’t.

 

The Japanese are often said to abide faithfully by the rules of the “group” and to be adept at forming cooperative systems in the face of great adversity. That would be hard to deny today. Valiant rescue and relief efforts continue nonstop, and no looting has been reported.

 

Away from the eyes of the group, however, we also have a tendency to behave egoistically — almost as if in rebellion. And we are experiencing that too: Necessities like rice and water and bread have disappeared from supermarkets and convenience stores. Gas stations are out of fuel. There is panic buying and hoarding. Loyalty to the group is being tested.

 

At present, though, our greatest concern is the crisis at the nuclear reactors in Fukushima. There is a mass of confused and conflicting information. Some say the situation is worse than Three Mile Island, but not as bad as Chernobyl; others say that winds carrying radioactive iodine are headed for Tokyo, and that everyone should remain indoors and eat lots of kelp, which contains plenty of safe iodine, which helps prevent the absorbtion of the radioactive element. An American friend advised me to flee to western Japan.

 

Some people are leaving Tokyo, but most remain. “I have to work,” some say. “I have my friends here, and my pets.” Others reason, “Even if it becomes a Chernobyl-class catastrophe, Fukushima is 170 miles from Tokyo.”

 

My parents are in western Japan, in Kyushu, but I don’t plan to flee there. I want to remain here, side by side with my family and friends and all the victims of the disaster. I want to somehow lend them courage, just as they are lending courage to me.

 

And, for now, I want to continue the stance I took in my hotel room: I will trust the words of better-informed people and organizations, especially scientists, doctors and engineers whom I read online. Their opinions and judgments do not receive wide news coverage. But the information is objective and accurate, and I trust it more than anything else I hear.

 

Ten years ago I wrote a novel in which a middle-school student, delivering a speech before Parliament, says: “This country has everything. You can find whatever you want here. The only thing you can’t find is hope.”

 

One might say the opposite today: evacuation centers are facing serious shortages of food, water and medicine; there are shortages of goods and power in the Tokyo area as well. Our way of life is threatened, and the government and utility companies have not responded adequately.

 

But for all we’ve lost, hope is in fact one thing we Japanese have regained. The great earthquake and tsunami have robbed us of many lives and resources. But we who were so intoxicated with our own prosperity have once again planted the seed of hope. So I choose to believe.

I've been easily absorbed into books and such lately, hence the title :)

 

I was actually lying in the puddle here, even though it doesn't really look like it :) This was so much fun to take :) Got a bit cold though :) I am really stoked with how this came out :)

5 year old Emma arrived in the Atelier with "a broken arm". She had administered first aid on herself using paper to create an arm cast. Then she set to work with her ink experimentation, using the dropper to carefully compose her colours. She chose "purple - as it's a magical colour" and "green for emeralds" . Somehow, "the broken arm" enabled her to focus even more as she cautiously applied the ink to the fabric.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to have free tickets to the Braque expo at the Grand Palais. I didn't know this artist before and was very happy to discover his work which has a very wide variety of styles. If you have the opportunity, go discover!

 

Having just done the series of 6 photos where there was indifference also, it was interesting to see yesterday that everyone was absorbed! I've decided to do this series in black and white to focus on the people rather than the art. However, I'd definitely recommend this artist to you :)

 

Hier j’ai eu la chance de pouvoir aller gratuitement à l’expo Braque au Grand Palais. Je connus pas cet artiste et fut heureuse de découvrir son travail qui a changé en plusieurs styles très différents tout au longue de sa vie. Si vous avez l’occasion, découvrez-le ! (Demain c’est le dernier jour au Grand Palais.)

 

Puisque j’ai fait très récemment cette petite série « immersion et indifférence » j’étais très sensible aux autres visiteurs … et cette fois-ci tout le monde était immergé ! J’ai décidé de montrer ces photos en noir et blanc car j’ai voulu mettre en valeur les personnes et non pas l’art. Mais je vous recommande vivement cet artiste :)

Ever wonder why Wheaties® is THE (so-called) "Breakfast of Champions," rather than protein?

 

Here's part of what the website says: "Wheaties & The New Wheaties FUEL- For over 75 years the Breakfast of Champions has been giving you the taste you want and the nutrition you need."

 

The ironic thing about it is, that it wasn't until relatively recently that we had the ability to spray on vitamins & minerals - which was done in an effort to stave off, ameliorate or eliminate many deficiency-related, food-type illnesses. Pellagra - from a deficiency of niacin (vitamin B3) - comes to mind. Here's the interesting thing about it, however.

 

Deficiency in the essential amino acid lysine - essential amino acids are those which our body cannot make, and therefore must be obtained through dietary intake - can lead to a niacin deficiency.

 

Lysine is a necessary building block for all protein in the body, and plays a major role in calcium absorption; building muscle protein; recovery from surgery or sports injuries; and the body's production of hormones, enzymes, and antibodies.

 

Lysine is found abundantly in high-protein foods such as eggs, meat (including beef, lamb, pork, and poultry), some fish (such as cod & sardines), cheese, and soy.

 

Proteins have amino acids in abundance. And you'll rarely - if ever - find a protein apart from a fat. Beef? Fat. Pork? Fat. Eggs? Fat. Cheese? Fat. Peanuts? Fat. Chicken? Fat. Salmon? Fat. Sardines? Fat. Herring? Fat. Soy? Fat.

 

Protein and Fat are "kissing cousins," if you prefer. And there's a reason for that. It's because they genuinely need each other.

 

And here's a parting thought... "your moment of zen," as it were.

 

Much is made about "low fat" diets and foods, including the demonization of whole milk, which contains only about 4% fat. For example, the Wheaties website says this about milk, "Jumpstart Your Metabolism and your day with a bowl of Wheaties, non-fat or 1% milk and a handful of berries." It's a very subtle, very indirect message.

 

Vitamins A, D, E and K - the fat soluble vitamins - must have fat in order for our bodies to properly metabolize & utilize them. And the other 9 vitamins (including the B-complex vitamins) which are water soluble, not only must have fat in order for our body to utilize them, but are excreted in urine.

 

And yes, our bodies can make some vitamins, but not all vitamins, and that typically occurs in the large intestine, where bacteria synthesize many water soluble vitamins.

 

For example:

 

• Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is involved in DNA synthesis and energy, fat and protein metabolism. Food sources of cobalamin include seafood, beef, chicken mild and cheese.

 

• Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is necessary for our bodies to properly utilize glucose, and in protein metabolism.

 

• Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is necessary for energy production.

 

• Pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5) is essential for our bodies to synthesize and metabolize proteins, carbohydrates and fatty acids.

 

• Pyroxidine (Vitamin B6) - found in chicken, fish and meat - has a predominant role in protein and steroid hormone action.

 

• Folic acid (Vitamin B9) is important for DNA synthesis, growth and development, and prevents birth defects (neural tube defects, a basic failure in the formation of the spinal cord, which is our body's neural superhighway) in the unborn.

 

NONE of those water soluble vitamins could be either properly utilized, or synthesized if fat were not present.

 

And the kicker is that the de-fatting process removes the fat-soluble vitamins from milk, which in turn must be "fortified" with vitamins.

I reached for my copy of Ray Stenning's excellent A National Bus Company Album (Viewfinder, Wiveliscombe, 1979), which includes a useful "flow chart" illustrating the various absorptions of small operators by their larger neighbours that took place under NBC auspices. Rhondda Transport was merged with Western Welsh in 1971, I discovered. Of course, I soon started leafing through the book and had soon most agreeably "wasted" three-quarters of an hour. But hang on ...what was that? On page 104 was a photograph of a vehicle that appeared to be identical to the one in my own photo. It was even operating "the hour and a half long 332 route from Maerdy via Porth and Pontypridd".

The caption vouchsafed further information. In deference to local loyalties, Western Welsh reintroduced the Rhondda fleetname on buses operating from Porth (roll that r and say "Pworrrth"), which had been the old company's base. Disappointingly then, the fleetname we see is a deliberate reinstatement rather than a natural survival. I doubt whether it lasted much longer anyway. Western Welsh soon merged with Red & White, forming a new company in which both identities were lost. The bus was a 1965 AEC Renown 3B3RA with Northern Counties body. The photograph was taken at Cardiff on Wednesday 23rd March 1977.

I managed to capture this spectrum of the partially clear sky above the Sun direction about 12min after it set on 8 December in Bath UK. I used my old Beck Wavelength Prism Spectroscope on a stand and held a phone camera up to the eyepiece.

 

The photograph is straddled by my two drawings of a prism spectrum which show the telluric features marked: red/brown for oxygen and blue for water bands on the top.

 

I post it here since it shows rather clearly the structure in the yellow part of the spectrum with the clear, visually prominent, unabsorbed yellow band between 580 and 590nm.

 

At this time, the air was clear and dry and so the water bands are relatively weak. The tetra-oxygen features at 577 and 630nm are strong however, especially the one in the yellow/green which dominates the the visual appearance of the spectrum. Having said that the water absorption bands are relatively weak, it seems as if the band around 500nm could be visible as a slight but noticeable shading in the prism spectrum. It is in the right place and is marked on the Ångström maps.

 

Although the photograph does not show the far red bands because of the detector filtration, I can see beyond the Fraunhofer A-band to about 800nm when looking at the setting sun with a small diffraction-grating spectroscope. [Don't look directly at the sun, even with a spectroscope, when it is bright and higher in the sky — unless you know what you are doing!]

 

However, my ageing eyes no longer allow me to see clearly the Fraunhofer H & K lines between 395 and 400nm.

This is a composite image created from one of the iris images. I made a copy of it, flipped it horizontally then merged the two together using a multiply blend and adjusted the hues.

South Padre supposedly has THE best sand for sand castle building. "Professional sand sculptors" rate it the highest based on many factors-- moisture absorption, grit, fineness of grain.

Kantara Castle (Greek: Κάστρο της Καντάρας Turkish: Kantara Kalesi) is a castle in Cyprus, under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus. The exact date of its construction remains unknown, the most plausible theory being the Byzantine period. It combines Byzantine and Frankish architectural elements, became derelict in 1525 and was dismantled in 1560. It gave its name to the nearby Kantara monastery.

 

Kantara is situated to the east of the Buffavento Castle with the St. Hilarion Castle standing even farther to the west forming a protective axis in the Kyrenia mountain range of Cyprus. As both of the other castles are visible from Buffavento, it was used to pass signals between them. The castles were built in conjunction during the Byzantine period but the date of their commission remains unknown. Among the theories put forward to explain their origin the popular are: In 965 (after the expulsion of the Arabs from the island), in 1091 by the rebel Rhapsomates, during the rule of Eumathios Philokales (1091–1094), in the late 11th century after the Cilician coast was overrun by the Seljuk Empire or in 1096 as a countermeasure for the upheaval caused by the First Crusade.[1] The name of the castle derives from the Cypriot Maronite Arabic word kandak which means stone bridge.

 

Serving as a watchtower for pirate raids, an administrative centre and a place of incarceration the castle saw next to no fighting. In 1191, it was taken by Richard the Lionheart during his campaign against the island's ruler Isaac Komnenos of Cyprus. Richard subsequently sold the island to the Knights Templar whose rule abruptly ended after a major revolt in Nicosia. Cyprus was thus resold to Guy of Lusignan, the former king of Jerusalem who became the first king of Cyprus in 1192. A period of peace ended with the death of Hugh I of Cyprus in 1218. A struggle over who should act as the kingdom's regent ensued, pitting the House of Ibelin with the local supporters of Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. Frederick's arrival in Limassol in 1228 escalated the conflict into an open war. In 1229, the castle came under siege by the Ibelins, who bombarded it with trebuchets, reportedly destroying several buildings. The castle's garrison surrendered a year later when its commander Gauvain de Cheneche was killed by a crossbow bolt. Afterwards, the Lusignans continued their reign interrupted only by occasional palace coups. In 1373, Cyprus was invaded by the Republic of Genoa imprisoning the local nobility. According to Philip of Novara's chronicle prince John of Antioch managed to escape from Famagusta after disguising himself as the valet of his cook. John subsequently fled to Kantara, from which he organised a successful counter offensive that expelled the Genoese after the latter failed to capture Kantara.

 

Recognizing the importance of the three Kyrenian castles James I of Cyprus and Peter II of Cyprus vastly expanded their fortifications. During their reign Kantara was transformed into a garrison castle, barracks and an enormous cistern were erected. Another cistern located at the basement of the castle was converted into a prison and later made into rooms for the captain of garrison. In 1489, the Republic of Venice acquired the island, 1519 Italian engineers branded the castle as obsolete. At which time the Kyrenian mountain castles fell into disuse, the last garrison departing in 1525. The castle was finally dismantled in 1560. Kantara's buildings remain in a relatively good condition until they were subjected to looting in the early 20th century. In 1905, the castle was classified as historic heritage due to the efforts of the French archaeologist Camille Enlart. In 1914, British colonial authorities under George Jeffery undertook restoration work at the castle, in an effort to attract sightseers. In 1939, the foundation of the horseshoe tower was refurbished in order to prevent it from collapsing.

 

Kantara is situated on an elevation of 550–600 metres (1,800–1,970 ft) above sea level. The castle is surrounded by ridges of barren granite and sandstone bedrock which were used as the main building materials for the castle's construction. The materials were subjected to coarse masonry; most of the buildings are coated with thick layers of plaster to cover the poor quality of the materials. Doors, windows and quoins were transported from elsewhere. The lack of local water sources necessitated the collection of rainwater through the use flat roofs which were connected to the cisterns through a drainage system. Among the six cisterns used the largest stood outside the walls. Buildings contained bread ovens and perhaps even a mill.

 

The steep crags limit the available pathways to a narrow valley on its eastern side, which is guarded by twin towers named Nicolas and Faucherre respectively. The first gate is followed by a barrel vaulted barbican, a steep chicane then leads to the portcullis protected main gate. The barbican shows great similarities with contemporary Cilician Armenian designs, having a gallery of arrowslits and two towers of its own. To the north of the main gate stands a horseshoe shaped tower providing additional support to the defenders of the barbican. The apsidal vault at the front of the tower facilitates better shock absorption. Despite its similarities to Roman and Byzantine military architecture it was in fact constructed sometime between 1208 and 1228.

 

The surrounding 120 by 70 metres (390 ft × 230 ft) wall contained ten garrison rooms which were constructed in the late 14th century, the barracks were connected with a latrine. A concealed postern, guarded by two towers lies on the south–western corner of the castle. To the south of the main gate, was built a rectangular, barrel vaulted keep, used a prison, later converted into a cistern. The centre of its northern wall is graced by a refined late 14th century Frankish window built from what once was an embrasure. The shape of the embrasures throughout the castle points out that they were mainly used by crossbowmen. At the top of the castle stand the ruins of "The Queen's Chamber", an alleged fortified chapel destroyed in a Turkish naval bombardment in 1525 and looted in the 19th century.
