I was able to attend Project Nunway LA this past weekend, the models, designers and venue were amazing, it was all for Charity and it was amazing!!!
I was lucky enough to hang out all day and get some great behind the scenes shots, then I was able to enjoy watching the show!
It has begun... and everything is BLURY!!
Typically here, with regular Lasik, I would already be able to proclaim, "it worked!" But not with my operation. I got PRK done (PhotoRefractive Keratectomy), which takes much longer to recover from. I'm no good at waiting for anything, so I'm climbing the walls while waiting for my eyes to heal.
Of course you're asking why the hell would I choose the one that takes time? I totally agree. There were several factors for this decision... ASIDE from the doctor recommending this particular one.
This procedure is bladeless. It's ALL LASER. This is huge to me. The outer layer of the cornea is disolved, the laser reshapes your lens and the outer layer sloooooooowly grows back. This is what takes time and demands patience. With the OTHER procedures they actually use a blade to slice a thin corneal flap and roll it up like a rug, do the reshaping with the laser, and roll the carpet flap back over the affected surface. This is just gross.
The doctor said even some seven years later you can take a sharp tool and peel back this flap. With PRK, there is no flap. In fact, when it heals, an eye doctor won't even be able to tell that I had surgery done. This "non-flappage" appeals to me.
My cornea is slightly thinner than normal (a 500 vs. a 550) so there is less cornea to cut, so they also recomend the PRK for this reason.
Probably the biggest selling point to me is the super uber futuristic top-of-the-line cutting-edge technology. Any guy would drool over this stuff. I trust technology, and if PRK uses the best tech, then I want PRK.
The experience itself was actually quite transcendent. All the flashing lights and trying to focus on the little red blinking light while the laser is doing... "something" and your senses are trying to take it all in. Honestly I would describe it very much like being taken up into a spaceship, or like going into heaven when you die. I'm not being over dramatic, I promise. It was very cool. I'd like to do it again JUST for the intense beauty and thrill. The only yuck factor was the little vacuum tube that was hovering to one side that was slurping up the eyeball flavored smoke rising from my evaporating cornea. I thought the dentist was the only place I would smell my own burning flesh, that and being burned at the stake for heressy.. Add this place to that short list.
So here I am, waiting to heal. My eyes fluxuate almost constantly. This kind of blury, that kind of blury, waking up and seeing everything perfectly and then slowly my eyes go blurred again. It's a tease. Trying to see my computer screen is almost too difficult to work (I think that's why they told me I wouldn't want to go back to work for a while). But who REALLY listens to the doctor? Kidding. I follow my regiment faithfully, which brings me back to this picture. Eye drops, eye drops, eye drops! this is my world. This and as much sleep as possible, and who am I to complain about that?! I charish my sleep.
I'd recomend these people, but I can't see anymore so I won't!... Kidding!
Here is website of the people that did it for me, and a little more about PRK. They have good information on all the other procedures, so I would recomend reading about them if you are thinking about getting it done.

Some background:
Rockwell International’s A-8 light attack aircraft’s origins can be traced back to the U.S. Air Force the Attack Experimental (A-X) program that was launched in 1966. Criticism that the U.S. Air Force did not take close air support seriously prompted a few service members to seek a specialized attack aircraft. In the Vietnam War, large numbers of ground-attack aircraft were shot down by small arms, surface-to-air missiles, and low-level anti-aircraft gunfire, prompting the development of an aircraft better able to survive such weapons. Fast jets such as the North American F-100 Super Sabre, Republic F-105 Thunderchief, and McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II proved for the most part to be ineffective for close air support. The Douglas A-1 Skyraider – designed in the final WWII stages as a torpedo bomber – was the USAF's primary close air support aircraft, and completely outdated.
This situation had been expectable, though. Earlier on, in 1959, Cold War strategists had been focusing on supersonic and ever-complex aircraft, ICMBs, missile-carrying submarines and long-range bombers. Some in the Pentagon still saw a need for low-speed, close-in ground attack aircraft that could serve in "bush war"-style conflicts such as those blossoming in Southeast Asia. Private ventures like Chance Vought’s V-433 proposal for a low cost, versatile light attack aircraft to serve the needs of the US Navy and Marine Corps, potentially a successor for the highly robust and versatile Douglas AD/A-1 Skyraider, were considered but eventually rejected, leading to a severe CAS capability gap during the Vietnam conflict.
Things were to change on 6 March 1967, when the Air Force released a request for information to 21 defense contractors for the A-X. The objective was to create a design study for a low-cost attack aircraft. Discussions with A-1 Skyraider pilots operating in Vietnam and analysis of the effectiveness of current aircraft used in the role indicated the ideal aircraft should have long loiter time, low-speed maneuverability, massive cannon firepower, and extreme survivability: an aircraft that had the best elements of the Ilyushin Il-2, Henschel Hs 129 and Skyraider. While turboprop engines were requested in the initial request, by May 1969, requirements had changed to specify use of turbofan engines.
Among the initial responses was a rather radical proposal from North American Rockwell, the Model 456, a compact turboprop attack aircraft, slightly smaller than the Douglas A-1. The Model 456 was primarily designed by the company’s Los Angeles-based North American Aviation branch, after its merger with Rockwell International in September 1967. The concept was for an aircraft optimized for close support and versatility to perform the Navy attack mission. A major selling point would be a unit cost with Government Furnished Equipment to be under $400,000 each if the order was for 500 aircraft. To keep costs low and save development time, the Model 456 incorporated many design features and even wholesale hardware elements from the company’s former projects. For instance, the straight wings and swept tail elements were taken from the US Navy’s North American T-2 Buckeye trainer, while the fuselage reminded of the AF-1/FJ-4B Fury fighter bomber but featured more tapered tail section with a set of air brakes. The aircraft was designed for carrier operations and had attachment points for a launch cable under the wing roots as well as a retractable arrester hook, even though the wings – thanks to the aircraft’s compact dimensions – were not foldable.
The Model 456 was powered by a T64-GE-8 turboprop with an output of 2,850 hp (2,130 kW) at 1,160 propeller rpm. The engine was placed behind the cockpit and breathed through a lip intake and an air duct between the cockpit floor and the front landing wheel well. Its single exhaust port was on the starboard flank, and the directed jet efflux countered propeller torque. The four-blade propeller was driven through a shaft that ran above the air duct and below the cockpit floor, connected with the T64 through a reduction gearbox above the engine’s centreline, together with an airscrew brake and bolt-on control unit.
The pilot sat under a wide bubble canopy in an armored cockpit tub that protected against heavy machine gun fire, directly behind the large propeller. Thanks to the high and forward position the pilot had a very good all-round field of view. The tricycle landing gear was basically taken wholesale from former North American products: the front landing gear was based on the AF-1/FJ-4B Fury’s arrangement, which retracted backwards and rotated 90° to lie flat under the engine’s air intake duct, while the wide main landing gear, which fully retracted inwards into the low-set wings, was based on T-2 Buckeye’s production parts.
The aircraft was touted to be all-weather-capable with instrument flight equipment and a ground controlled all-weather bombing system. It was also mentioned that provisions would be provided for pylon-mounted electronic equipment to support full all-weather attack missions. Maximum speed at 25,000ft was projected to be .74 Mach. The aircraft was relatively compact, 35' 10" long with a wingspan of 37'.
Due to its donor parts and to keep the airframe as light and simple as possible the Model 456 did not feature internal weapons like guns, but was to have six external pylons for the carriage of a wide range of weapons (including gun pods), ECM pods, or radar or guidance pods (e.g. for the AGM-12 Bullpup). In addition to conventional bombs, Sidewinder AAMs could be carried, too, primarily for self-defence but also to attack enemy helicopters or slow low-flying aircraft. Normal bomb load was specified with 3,500lbs, which could be augmented on short-range missions with a reduced internal fuel load to 5.000 lbs. Beyond CAS missions, other important tasks for the Model 456 would be helicopter escort to support the Marine Corps and supporting a vertical envelopment for approximately 3 hours with a normal external weapons load.
In May 1970, the USAF issued a modified, and much more detailed request for proposals (RFP) around the A-X. The threat of Soviet armored forces and all-weather attack operations had become more serious. Now included in the requirements was that the aircraft would be designed specifically for the new and massive GAU-8 30 mm gatling cannon. Due the changed requirements, the Model 456 fell out of the program.
However, in parallel, following the United States Navy's (USN) VAL (“Heavier-than-air, Attack, Light”) requirement, which had yielded the LTV A-7, North American Rockwell’s Model 456 found interest by the USMC. Initially adopted by USN, the A-7 proved attractive to other services and air forces, soon being adopted by the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Air National Guard (ANG) to replace their aging Douglas_A-1_Skyraider"Skyraider and North American F-100 Super Sabre fleets. The A-7 was, however, not a complete replacement for the A-1, and the USMC did not adopt the type and rather stuck with the lighter A-4 Skyhawk, which had, with the A-4M Skyhawk II, in the meantime evolved into an attack/fighter bomber aircraft that had been upgraded and tailored to the USMC’s needs. There was, however, still the need for a simple, slower and foremost cheap attack/CAS aircraft, a requirement shared with the USAF which was also looking for a timely and cost-effective A-1 replacement. Both USMC and USAF requirements overlapped in many aspects, and North American Rockwell’s Model 456 was ordered as the A-8 ‘Destrier’ in late 1971.
The first YA-8, now under the new company name Rockwell International, after a further merger of North American Rockwell with Rockwell Manufacturing, made its maiden flight in Los Angeles on 30th of May 1973. Three prototype machines were built, and the following test program revealed some deficiencies, including directional instability around the longitudinal axis, which was countered with a bigger fin surface, achieved through a fin fillet. Other modifications that were introduced for serial production were additional wing tip tanks and more external hardpoints under the fuselage and the wings, so that more light weapons like gun or missiles pods or single bombs could be carried. The overall ordnance load was not increased, though. Additionally, internal guns were re-introduced, even though their integration into the airframe was not easy. To retain the original wings the weapons could not be integrated into the wings – there was no internal space for them, and the full span slats as well as the wide stance landing gear prevented their internal installation. One considered option to mount fixed guns was a pair of gondolas with a Mk. 12 20mm cannon each under the wings, but these would have blocked valuable hardpoints outside of the propeller disc, e.g. for guided and unguided missiles or more cannon pods). Eventually, shallow gondolas for guns and their ammunition supply were integrated under the wing roots, inside of the landing gear wells and using internal wing space at the wing roots. This kept the guns’ mass close to the aircraft’s center of gravity but required a solution to fire through the propeller disc, as on early WWII aircraft. An anachronistic arrangement, but it was adopted for the A-8 and as an innovative measure the firing sequence was not controlled through a classic mechanical gearbox but through an electronic signal that only allowed gunfire through spaces between the propeller blades.
A-8 production started in June 1974 and encompassed two versions: the A-8A for the USAF and the A-8B for the USMC, which only differed in service-typical equipment packages. 250 A-8As were ordered for the USAF and ANG units, primarily as replacement for F-84 and F-86H fighter bombers, plus 150 A-8Bs for the USMC which replaced early A-4 and OV-10 variants. The most distinctive feature of the A-8B was a massive, forked arrestor hook under the rear fuselage, which would allow carrier operations or the use of land-bound arrestor cable installations at improvised frontline airfields. The A-8A also featured an arrestor hook, but it was of simpler and lighter design, only intended for emergency uses.
Both service versions had a total of seven hardpoints (three under the fuselage, two under each wing outside of the landing gear) and also received wingtip tanks to extend fuel capacity and loiter time, while the maximum weapon ordnance was reduced to 2.800 lb (3.500 lb in overload configuration).
The Destrier was offered for export, too, Due to its small size, it could be operated from older, smaller World War II-era aircraft carriers still used by smaller navies during the 1970s. These older ships were often unable to accommodate newer Navy fighters such as the F-4 Phantom II and F-8 Crusader, which were faster and more capable, but significantly larger and heavier. However, a propeller-driven aircraft appeared outdated at that time, and despite the A-8s merits as an attack aircraft it found no takers - instead, many foreign air forces adopted the A-4 Skyhawk, which was similar in size but appeared "more modern".
The Marine Corps would not take the U.S. Navy's replacement, the LTV A-7 Corsair II, instead keeping Destriers and Skyhawks in service with both Regular Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve attack squadrons (VMA), and ordering the new A-4M model - what over time relegated the A-8 to secondary line duties. The last USMC Destrier was delivered in 1979, and they were used until the mid-1980s before they were replaced in frontline units, together with the Skyhawks, by the equally small, but more versatile STOVL AV-8B Harrier II.
The A-8B saw limited action in the Gulf War of 1990–91. Twenty-four aircraft of VMA-311 "Tomcats" based at on-shore bases, initially flew training and support sorties, as well as practicing with coalition forces. The A-8Bs were to be held in reserve during the initial phase of the preparatory air assault of Operation Desert Storm. The A-8B was first used in the war on the morning of 17 January 1991, when a call for air support from an OV-10 Bronco forward air controller against Iraqi artillery that was shelling Khafji and an adjacent oil refinery, brought the A-8B into combat. The following day, USMC A-8Bs attacked Iraqi positions in southern Kuwait. Throughout the war, A-8Bs performed armed reconnaissance, CAS and FAC missions, and worked in concert with coalition forces to identify or destroy targets. VMA-311 was also the last USMC unit to operate the A-8B and retired its last four aircraft on 22 June 1994.
USAF service of the A-8A was less dramatic. The Air Force Destriers were quickly handed over to National Guard units during the early Eighties, where the machines replaced, toghether with USAF A-7D Corsair IIs, F-86H, A-37 and F-84F fighter bombers. When 1st generation General Dynamics F-16A Fighting Falcons began to be phased out from frontline USAF units and handed down to the Air National Guards in the late Eighties the A-8As were gradually retired. The last were taken out of service in 1993 by the units at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base, Ohio.

The model and its assembly:
The inspiration came )long ago) when I found some design proposals for USN/USMC attack aircraft from the Sixties, e.g. the Vought V-406A and V-433 designs/propsals. Additionally I had always thought about a strike version of the T-2 Buckeye, even though the latter turned out to be very unpractical. However, there remained the fact that the T-2 "recycled" the wings from the vintage FJ Fury jet fighter, and maybe North American or its successor, Rockwell International, had used that concept again for a light attack aircraft submission, as a A-1 successor for the USAF and cheaper alternative for the A-7, esp. for the USMC? This led to the T-2 and the FJ-4B as body donors (yes, Kit, it's the Emhar kit), and the concept of changing everything to a compact turboprop single-seater for CAS duties.
Work started with the T-2 wings, which were taken OOB but had their flaps cut out and lowered - easy to realize on the Matchbox parts, and it makes the static model later look a bit more interesting and lively.
Another thing that required lots of attention at this early stage was the Fury's cockpit tub (yes, its fuselage is used, but see below). Emhar's OOB offering is... doubtful, so I decided to implant a completely different/new cockpit tub and dashboard, including scratched side walls. This new tub also had the benefit that I was able to put lots of lead beads under it as support and to keep the nose down. At this stage I also started to modify the nose for a (massive) propeller implant, with a chin intake (using OOB parts, just opeing the duct) and a simulated deeper duct inside with blackened foamed styrene to block sight/light.
As already mentioned, the FJ-4B fuselage was used, but the tail called for a fundamental decision. Originally I just planned to use the whole hull, add the prop and close the jet exhaust at the tail, relocating the turboprop exhaust to the right flank (à la V-433 to counter torque). But I found that... boring, and I wanted a more original side profile. So, the idea was born to transplant the T-2 tail wholesale, too! That, however, called for more and massive surgery, because fuselage width and depth of the two airframes hardly match in size and shape. An initial measure to bring the parts together somehow was to cut away wedges from the FJ-4's fuselage halves to narrow them down by ~3mm, but the intersection with the T-2 tail still called for about 1mm PSR. Messy!
At that point I also started to work on the prop and its attachment to the nose. The prop came from a Quickboost set with resin props for a P-3 Orion - all blades separate and attached only with tiny/thin/fragile pins to the spinner, which thankfully comes with appropriate holes for them. To hold the prop and create an adapter I used a section from a Tornado drop tank to bridge the area in front of the windshield, added a styrene tube inside and a metal axis to the prop, so that it could spin freely.
Once the wing surfaces were attached the overall PSR orgy started... The area around the tail hook required more attention than expected, because of the raising ventral line of the T-2 tail vs. the "flat" FJ-4B bottom. Thanks to the Emhar kit's separate tail hook compartment I was able to bridge that area and create something plausible (with more PSR!).
Next problem: the canopy. It is not only utterly thick (1.5mm I guess), it also hardly matches the fuselage. So, more PSR, in an attempt to sculpt the cockpit area that it matches the clear parts, at least better than OOB... Once the overall shape was settled a hole for the new exhaust was drilled, a plastic straw would became the new jet pipe.
After even more PSR it became time for the smaller bits and piece, e .g. the landing gear (taken wholesale from the T-2 and the FJ-4B - looks a bit stalky but we will need the groudn clearance!), hardpoints, and cannon gondolas under the wing roots. These were a conceptional fight - I wanted guns (to suppress enemy fire during an attack), but the wings outside the propeller disc did not offer a suitable place to mount them. Underwing gondolas were ruled out because they's block space for other external ordnance. Most interestingy, designs like the V-433 were supposed to carry a synchronized M61 Vulcan gun in the belly to fire through the propeller - I found that to be too complex and just settled for a pair of 20mm Mk. 12 guns, also synchroniezd, though. Anachronistic, but the best available place and space.
With the ability to stand on lits of feet it was time to check the prop, its size and clearance. That turned out to look better than expected, I just clipped the prop tips (to a square shape) later because the original P-3 prop appeared slightly oversized. Additionally, the canopy was cut into two pieces and the windshield was attached, too.
At this stage I also settled upon external ordnance beyond the guns. I went for iron bombs, LOTS of them, exploiting the potential payload capability of the A-8. The result: a total of eighteen Mk. 81 "Firecracker" 250 lb bombs, on two MERs under the fuselage, plus two twin launchers and a pair of single bombsunder the outer wings. However, these parts/bombs came from a Hobby Boss A-7 kit, and all these eighteen(!) bombs had to be assembled from two halves plus the fuzes - a building nightmare! Due to the Hobby Boss sprues I had to outfit four of the bombs with elongated soft ground fuzes, these went under the streamlined twin ejector racks (left over from an Italeri F-18 kit. An impressive load, but the aircraft would have been able to haul it around - highly effective for its intended CAS role!
Painting and markings:
As per usual, I rather stick to conservative livery choices for fictional aircraft, and since I placed the A-8 in Seventies/Eighties time frame in USMC service I went for a paint scheme adopted from AV-8As/early AV-8Bs with FS 34064, 36099 and 36440 - a very dark olive drab tone, a bluish grey (much like RAF Ocean Grey from WWII) and Light Gull Grey underneath. The landing gear and its wells became glossy white, the cockpit tub medium grey (FS 36231), inspired by contemporary A-4Ms. The propeller spinner and the blades' cuffed sections became black while the outer blades medium grey, inspired by the finish of their donor aircraft, the P-3 Orion. The exhaust area was apinmted with iron metallic (Revell 91) and then treated with graphite for a better metallic shine and burnt look. The iron bombs were painted in Olive Drab (Tamiya) and received details like the yellow twin rings by brush. Again, a tedious affair, with eighteen items to handle...
Decals and marking primarily came from a Sky Models 1:72 sheet for Harriers and AV-8Bs, even though it's a mix of markings from various aircraft so that the markings better match the A-8's airframe. Stencils and other bits came from thze scrap box (including an Academy OV-10D sheet), and the red warning lines around the engine compartment as well as the black wing leading edges and the silver joints on flaps and fin rudder were created with generic decal stripe material from TL Modellbau.
Finally, everything was sealed with acrylic varnish from a rattle can - not totally matt, so that light reflexes emphasize the aircraft's lines.

Tactical shooting requires agile and adaptive thinkers able to handle the challenges of full spectrum operations in an era of persistent conflict. To meet this requirement, TAPS delivers a comprehensive, systematic, progressive Train-the-Trainer shooting program focused on fundamental mastery and built for Law Enforcement officers, military personal, and qualified civilians. Designed for leaders and trainers, the TAPS course also applies to the patrol-level officer, basic level Soldiers, and civilian self & home defense minded shooters. The approach to instruction is through coaching and mentorship and both demonstrates and transfers a training method that is safe, effective, combat relevant, and encourages a continuous thought process that demands accountability. Training is conducted on the range and focuses on advanced refinement of the basic fundamentals of marksmanship as applied to the primary and secondary weapons systems. Utilizing a building block learning model, TAPS combines the pressures and dynamics of competitive shooting and tactical application. While course of instruction is on the firing range, the TAPS training approach also translates into training venues outside the range.
Course Outline:
The 2-day course offering provides the following training and instruction:
- Lecture on proper weapons handling and safety
- Refresh the fundamentals and grouping exercises
- Conduct a diagnostic course of fire
- Conduct a discussion on the importance of performing a focal shift during training and avoiding mundane drills that do not encourage a thought process
- Other topics covered and practiced are; grouping exercises with both primary and secondary weapon systems, target discrimination, use of barricades, movement, close quarter battle techniques, immediate action drills, ballistics 101, transitions, magazine changes
- Escalation of training and intensity will vary depending on number of students and their skill level though the core of the course will always remain the same
- This course is marksmanship intensive.

These shots were taken during a mid night photo session through New York City one night last Fall. Luckily, I was able to roam around unnoticed and have my way with this iconic New York City landmark. These shots are all post processed HDR photos. However, not having a tripod on hand, I was forced to get creative in order to create stability. Here I rested my camera onto the Grand Piano located at the main entrance of the hotel.
Hotel Info:
The Waldorf=Astoria is a luxury hotel in New York. It has been housed in two historic landmark buildings in New York City. The first, designed by architect Henry J. Hardenbergh, was on the Fifth Avenue site of the Empire State Building. The present building at 301 Park Avenue in Manhattan is a 47-storey, 190.5 m (625 ft) Art Deco landmark, designed by architects Schultze and Weaver and dating from 1931.
Waldorf=Astoria was the first hotel to serve room service, making a huge impact for the future of the hotel industry. Luxury was the brand they sought after.
The hotel is now branded as the Waldorf=Astoria, with a double hyphen, but originally a single hyphen was employed between "Waldorf" and "Astoria," as recalled by a popular expression and song, "Meet Me at the Hyphen".
The modern hotel has three American and classic European restaurants, and a beauty parlor located off the main lobby. Several boutiques surround the lobby. A "hotel within a hotel" in its upper section is known as The Waldorf Towers operated by Conrad Hotels & Resorts.
The Towers of the Waldorf=Astoria marries impeccable service and opulent amenities with residential-style luxury hotel accommodations as legendary as the guests who have stayed within..
The hotel has its own railway platform as part of Grand Central Terminal, used by Franklin D. Roosevelt, James Farley, Adlai Stevenson, and Douglas MacArthur, among others. An elevator large enough for Franklin D. Roosevelt's automobile provides access to the platform.[4]
Its name is ultimately derived from Walldorf in Germany and the prominent German-American Astor family, that originated there.
Was able to make it down to the Spring Blue Gold Game and Notre Dame Stadium this year. Had a great time with some family members and got to see my favorite team play. Looking forward to the 2013 season, GO IRISH!
Age: 35
Skills: jackal is able to make any weapon out of energy.
Allies: Ultron, Red mist.
Enemies: pool family tree
Jackal is a super villain who worked with Ultron. But now he works alone. Jackal\'s past is a bit mysterious but he got his powers when he was exposed to large amounts of an unknown chemical. The chemical gave him the power to create weapons out of any matter he chooses. Because the chemical altered his DNA chain he has to wear a mask to be supplied with more of the mysterious chemical. As he grows older, his powers grow stronger. Eventually when he was 20 he applied for mercenary work. His first job was to assassinate a pentagon leader. After that missions successfulness, many of the top Gangs and terrorist organizations wanted his talents. After many years of merc work the secret organization "Red Mist" hired him to take down the American government. He accepted the task but he failed thanks to the Avengers. His failure caused him to be stripped of his reputation. Somehow though. He gained more reputation. He owned a house in a isolated area off the coast of Hawaii. He also owns a vacation home in Oklahoma. When he was in his vacation home he was pranked repeatedly by Tactipool and Brainpool. Tactipool accidently burned his vacation home down. Which made him and Jackal enemies.
Hi guys! This is another one of my entries for TTPES contest. I might change he backstory but for now here\'s Jackal.
Thanks,
Pretorian guard
Finally able to do a quick shoot with the canon! lol I wasn't able to take many pictures, but I hope you enjoy the ones I took!

Thomas Rogers, A.B on the Mildura warship, was engaged this afternoon in shipping ammunition on the Mararoa for Sydney. When the work was finished, instead of going ashore by the gangway, he leaped from the top deck with the intention of jumping from the rail to the wharf, 11 feet below, by laying hold of the rail and putting his foot on the stool. He slipped his hold in jumping, and struck the side of the wharf. Then the body rebounded on to the wooden fender below, and he was killed instantaneously.[1]

It is not connected to the death of Thomas but is close to when he died so interesting for uniform styling and equipment.

Quick, what two buildings in New York, are taller than the Empire State Building? That's easy -One World Trade, and.......432 Park Avenue?
Still under construction, this 1398 foot tall Super Residential building, will be the third tallest in the USA.
I'm somewhat disturbed by this fact.

I am pleased to be able to share this historic view with those having an interest in the buses of Aberdeen Corporation Transport. This is one of a handful of pictures passed to me in the 1960s. The photographer/copyright holder is unknown. Should the photographer/copyright holder contact me I’ll credit the image or withdrawn it accordingly.
The first Alexander double deck buses and the last AEC Regent Vs, which arrived in in Aberdeen in 1959, were 271 – 275 (MRS 271 – 275). According to a trade press report, the batch was specially delivered in time for the Royal Highland Show (RHS) held in the city that year. Alexander was the fourth manufacturer in less than four years to provide bodies on AEC Regent Vs. Spreading orders across four coachbuilders in such a short period was most likely due to the urgent need for buses to replace the last trams (they were withdrawn on 3 May 1958), and reports that Metro-Cammell was very busy at the time and not able to deliver to ACT’s timescale. Another factor which may have brought Alexander into the frame was representations made to the Council by a trade union representing craftsman coachbuilders about bodywork orders going south of the border. The vehicle supplied by the “foreign” builders were Crossley 205 – 209 (HRG 205 – 209), Park Royal 250 – 254 (KRS 250 – 254), and Metro-Cammell 255 – 269 (KRS 255 – 264/LRG 265 – 269). The Crossley bodied buses had Gardner 6LW engines, while all of the others, including the Alexander, ones were AEC powered.
Compared to bodies on earlier deliveries the Alexander ones stood out as being very different. The bulbous front and rear domes, vertical lower panels (they didn’t curve inwards within the wheelbase) and smart black mesh grills all ensured that these buses were impressive. The vertical lower panels gave the impression of a wider vehicle sitting closer to the road.
My first trip on one of the batch was from Union Street to Hazlehead, the location of the RHS, but I don’t remember if I visited the show. Trying out the new bus was probably the only reason for that journey. The sparkling paintwork and the smell of new upholstery and inside paint were memorable, but I have no recollection of the fleet number.
It’s my recollection that by the date these buses arrived the long front wings on all other tin fronted AECs and Daimlers had already been cut back – apparently to improve air flow to the front brakes and also to reduce the risk of accident damage. Photographs showing all five of the batch when new and before entry into service show 274 & 275 with chopped wings and 271 – 273 with full length ones. It is assumed that the modifications were done at King Street. Surprisingly the long wings survived for some years, even through overhauls and indeed engine changes in 1963 when Gardner 6LW units replaced the AEC engines. To accommodate the longer Gardner engines modifications were necessary to the front grill and the foothold/registration plate panel below. The result was that these parts protruded by a couple of inches or so from the tin front cowl. Photographs indicate that by late 1971 the wings on 271 – 273 had been cut back, so after twelve years they now looked like 274 & 275.
Aberdeen bought its first bodies from Alexander in 1958 when two single deck, and much rebuilt, Walker bodied 1947 Daimler CVD6s were given new bodies to make them more attractive for “Tour of City and Suburbs” and other duties. More Alexander products arrived in 1960 when ten 1951 Daimler CVG6/Northern Coachbuilders 160 – 169 (DRS 360 -369) were re-bodied. Apart from their exposed radiator and separate corner sections to the front destination/route number display panel, these buses looked the same as 271 – 275. After buying twelve Metro-Cammell bodied Daimler CVG6s in 1960, Aberdeen returned to Alexander who supplied a further sixty-five bodies on Daimlers from 1961 until 1965.
Transferring to Grampian Regional Transport on local government reorganisation in May 1975, all of 271 – 275 were sold to T D Alexander (Greyhound Luxury Coaches), Arbroath upon withdrawal the following year.
All of 271 – 275 entered service with colourful sign-written adverts – Bernard’s ale (near side) Invicta A front briefs (off side), The Co-op (upper rear) and Exide batteries (lower rear). Others may be able to confirm that a few of the older buses that were employed to provide additional capacity to the RHS had paper poster side adverts for Scottish Agricultural Industries (SAI).

Able Bodied Womans Work Yard, Southwell Workhouse, Southwell, Nottinghamshire.
Over the next few days, I'll be uploading pictures from inside and out of the workhouse to look at the various rooms and conditions the residents had to live under.
The details below are repeated on each photo, so if you've read it once (firstly, thank-you!) you don't need to read it again.
---------------------------
I could write a book about workhouses. I could also get on my soapbox (on reading about workhouses) about how the attitudes to the poor by the rich have not changed one iota since those days - modern quotes from the rich and their lack of empathy towards the poor and their lack of willingness of the rich to contribute (and to actively avoid contributing by legal tax loopholes) are almost identical to the attitudes of old. In places like Southwell, employment tended to be seasonal farm work, and they were laid off during the winter with not much hope of other employment. They were made to feel shamed and lazy and that it was their own fault that they were out of work. Just like now. Again I shall avoid the soapbox.
The Southwell workhouse was built in 1824 by Southwell Minsters Reverend John Becher as a residence for the poor. This workhouse was the first and used as a model for the nationwide system of hundreds of workhouses.
I'll not get into the details of the Poor Laws and the New Poor Laws here, but it's worth reading up on. The Workhouses came as a result of saving money because of the soaring cost of the equivalent of 'benefits' system (the poor laws). Note to self - keep of the soapbox (people that know me know that I am a socialist (proper socialist, NOT the Tory media image of socialist) because I actually care for and do something about people that are less well off than me). Sorry, took a step onto the box, but it does make my blood boil.
The Workhouse was a last resort for paupers. John Becher was a social reformer that set out his ideas in a pamphlet called 'The Anti-Pauper System'. The ideas were to reduce the tax burden, and to teach the poor to only ask for help as a last resort. The help provide was accommodation where discipline was exacting, accommodation basic and supervision constant.
On entry, people were segregated into several categories, never to meet while they were in residence (ie. families wouldn't see each other) as below :
Able bodied men
Able bodied women
Old and infirm men
Old and infirm women
Children under 7
Boys 7-12
Girls 7-15
Work for men was typically breaking rocks for use in roads, breaking old bones for fertiliser, picking oakum (old tarred rope) and for women, cooking, laundry, cleaning and picking oakum.
A typical timetable for 6 days a week was :
06:00 Rising Bell
06:30 Roll Call, Prayers then Breakfast (Bread and Gruel)
07:00 Work
12:00 Dinner (Boiled Meat and Potatoes or Soup. Saturdays Suet Pudding)
13:00 Work
18:00 Supper (Bread and Gruel)
20:00 Prayers then Bed
Christmas Day was Roast Beef and Plum Pudding. And the day off work.
I could go on, and on. It is worth reading about the workhouse system. Hopefully some of these pictures (uploaded over the next few days) will give some idea of what it was like. Visiting the workhouse was very poignant and sobering, but reading about it has made me realise that not a lot has changed in attitudes and divisions the in class system.
We made our annual trip to London in November. We travel down by coach from Slaithwaite and stay at The Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch. It’s actually a weekend ladies shopping trip that is run as a fundraiser for Slaithwaite Brass Band – I’m the only bloke that goes every year! We decided ( the two of us) to stay down in London until Thursday this time as we wanted to see weekday London and be able to explore a bit further afield on foot. We covered up to 16 miles a day, which is tough going on crowded pavements with hundreds of busy roads to cross. I photographed anything that looked interesting but I bent a contact in the CF card slot, fortunately I had quite a few SD cards with me and the 5D has dual slots so I was able to carry on using it. It’s currently at Lehmann’s getting fixed.
With it being close to Christmas the decorations are up everywhere so there was plenty of colour at night. In Hyde Park the Winter Wonderland was in full swing, we’ve never bothered going to it before but I went twice at night this time. It is massive this year, I couldn’t get over how big it is and the quality of some of the attractions. The cost and effort involved must be phenomenal – it was quite expensive though. It was very difficult to photograph, with extremes of light (LED’s) and darkness and fast moving rides into the bargain. I think I have some decent usable stuff but at the time of writing I am only part way through the editing process so I don’t know for sure.
We set off at around 8.15 am every day and stayed out for at least 12 hours. The weather was poor for a day and a half with drizzle and very dull grey conditions, fortunately we had some pleasant weather (and light) along the way as well. Being based at the end of Oxford Street – Europe’s busiest shopping street – meant that I did quite a bit of night shooting on there. Although I carried a tripod everywhere I only used it once and that was during the day! Because there is always a moving element in almost every shot it seemed pointless using a tripod. I would have got some shots free of movement – or I could have gone for ultra-long exposures to eliminate people and traffic but it would have been problematic I felt. In the end I wound the ISO up and hand held – fingers crossed.
We walked out to Camden Market and Locks but it had been raining and we were a bit early as many were only just setting up for the day. We tried to follow routes that we hadn’t used before and visit new places. We paid a fortune to get in St Pauls but you can’t use cameras. This something that I fail to see the point of, ban flash if you want but if you are going to encourage tourism why ban cameras when there is nothing in particular happening in there. It’s a rule that seems to be applied arbitrarily in cities around the world. Fortunately we could take photos from the outside of the dome, which was real reason for visiting, and we had some great light. Expensive compared with a couple of euros in some famous cathedrals. I’ve wanted to walk to Canary Wharf for a number of years and this year we did. We crisscrossed the Thames a few times and tried to follow the Thames path at other times. We covered around ten miles but it was an interesting day. It was also very quiet for the last four or five miles. We got there about 12.00 and managed to get a sandwich in a café in the shopping centre at the foot of the high rise office blocks before tens of thousands of office workers descended from above. It was mayhem, packed, with snaking queues for anywhere that sold food. We crossed to the other side of The Isle of Dogs and looked across to the O2 Arena and the cable car, unfortunately there isn’t a way across for pedestrians and it was around 3.00 pm. With darkness falling at around 4.30 we decide it was too late to bother. We made our way back to the Thames Clipper pier to check the sailing times. They sail every twenty minutes so we had a couple of glasses of wine and a rest before catching the Clipper. Sailing on the Thames was a first in 15 trips to London. The Clipper is fast and smooth, the lights had come on in the city and there was a fantastic moon rise. It was nigh on impossible to get good shots at the speed we were traveling though and there were times that I wished I could be suspended motionless above the boat. Again, hopefully I will have some usable shots.
We felt that the shopping streets were a little quieter, following the Paris massacre it was to be expected, I might be wrong as we were out and about at later times than previous trips. I think I have heard that footfall is down though. It was good to get into some of the quieter backstreets and conversely to be stuck in the city business district – The Square Mile- at home time. A mass exodus of people running and speed walking to bus stops and the rail and tube stations. It was difficult to move against or across the flow of bodies rushing home.
Whilst the Northern(manufacturing) economy is collapsing, London is a giant development site, it must be the tower crane capital of Europe at the moment. It was difficult to take a shot of any landmark free of cranes, it was easier to make the cranes a feature of the photo. It’s easy to see where the wealth is concentrated – not that there was ever any doubt about it. The morons with too much money are still driving their Lambo’s and Ferraris etc. like clowns in streets that are packed with cars , cyclists and pedestrians, accelerating viciously and noisily for 50 yards. They are just sad attention seekers. From Battersea to Canary Wharf we walked the Thames Embankment, the difference between high and low tide on the river is massive, but the water was the colour of mud – brown! Not very attractive in colour. We caught a Virgin Train from Kings Cross for £14.00 each – a bargain!. We had quite a bit of time to kill around midday at Kings Cross so I checked with security that I was OK to wander around taking photos, without fear of getting jumped by armed security, and set off to photograph the station and St Pancras International Station across the road. I haven’t even looked at the results as I type this but I’ll find out if they are any good shortly. Talking of security, following Paris, there was certainly plenty of private security at most attractions, I don’t know if it was terrorism related though, I can’t say I noticed an increased police presence on the streets. It took us three hours and five minutes from Kings Cross to being back home, not bad for a journey of 200 miles. I can’t imagine that spending countless billions on HS2 or HS3 is going to make a meaningful (cost effective) difference to our journey. Improving what we have, a little faster, would be good. There are some bumpy bits along the route for a mainline and Wakefield to Huddersfield is the equivalent of a cart track – and takes over 30 minutes – it’s only a stone’s throw.

A text, in english, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Burrowing Owl (Speotyto cunicularia) (ex-Athene cunicularia) is a small, long-legged owl found throughout open landscapes of North and South America. Burrowing owls can be found in grasslands, rangelands, agricultural areas, deserts, or any other dry, open area with low vegetation (Lewis 2005). They nest and roost in burrows, such as those abandoned by prairie dogs. Unlike most owls, burrowing owls are often active during the day. However, most hunting is done at dusk or at night.
Burrowing owls are able to live for at least 9 years in the wild and over 10 years in captivity.[citation needed] They are often killed by vehicles when crossing roads, and have many natural enemies, including badgers, coyotes, and snakes. They are also killed by both feral and domestic cats and dogs.
Burrowing owls have bright yellow eyes. The bill can be yellow or greenish depending on the subspecies. The legs are incompletely feathered, and the toes are grayish in color. They lack ear tufts and have a flattened facial disc. The owls have prominent white eyebrows and a white "chin" patch which they expand and display during certain behaviors.
Adult owls have brown upperparts with white spotting. The breast and belly are white with variable brown spotting or barring. Juvenile owls are similar in appearance, but they lack most of the white spotting above and brown barring below. Also, the young owls have a buff bar across the upper wing and their breast may be buffy rather than white.
Males and females are similar in size and appearance. However, adult males sometimes appear lighter in color because they spend more time outside the burrow during daylight, and their feathers become sun-bleached. The average adult is slightly larger than an American Robin, at 25 cm (10 inches) length, 53 cm (21 inches) wingspan, and 170g (6 oz) weight (Lewis 2005).
The typical "who who" call of a burrowing owl is associated with territory defense and breeding, often given by adult males to attract a female to a promising burrow. They also make other sounds, which are described as chucks, chattering, and screams. These sounds are usually accompanied by an up and down bobbing of the head. When alarmed, young birds will give a hissing call - a case of acoustic Batesian mimicry - that sounds like a rattlesnake (Haug et al. 1993).
Before European colonization, burrowing owls probably inhabited every suitable area of the New World, but they have experienced some restrictions in distribution since. They range from the southern portions of the western Canadian provinces through southern Mexico and western Central America. They are also found in Florida and many Caribbean islands. In South America, they are patchy in the northwest and through the Andes, but widely distributed from southern Brazil to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.
Burrowing owls are year-round residents in most of their range. Birds that breed in Canada and northern USA usually migrate south to Mexico and southern USA during winter months.
The burrowing owl is endangered in Canada[1], threatened in Mexico, and a species of special concern in Florida and most of the western USA. It is common and widespread in open regions of many Neotropical countries, where they sometimes even inhabit fields and parks in cities. In regions bordering the Amazon Rainforest they are spreading with deforestation. It is therefore listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
The major reasons for declining populations in North America are control programs for prairie dogs and loss of habitat, although burrowing owls readily inhabit some anthropogenic landscapes, such as airport grasslands or golf courses (Korfanta et al. 2005).
Burrowing owls are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. They are also included in CITES Appendix II.
Genetic analysis of the two North American subspecies indicates that inbreeding is not a problem within those populations (Korfanta et al. 2005).
The nesting season begins in late March or April in North America. Burrowing owls are usually monogamous, but occasionally a male will have two mates (Lewis 2005). Pairs of owls will sometimes nest in loose colonies. Their typical breeding habitat is open grassland or prairie, but they can occasionally adapt to other open areas like airports, golf courses, and agricultural fields. Burrowing owls are slightly tolerant of human presence, often nesting near roads, farms, homes, and regularly maintained irrigation canals.
The owls nest in an underground burrow, hence the name Burrowing Owl. They use burrows created by other burrowing animals such as prairie dogs, ground squirrels, or badgers (Holt et al. 1999). If burrows are unavailable and the soil is not hard or rocky, the owls may excavate their own. Burrowing owls will also nest in shallow, underground, man-made structures that have easy access to the surface.
The female will lay as many as 8-12 eggs over a two week period. She will then incubate the eggs for three to four weeks while the male brings her food. After the eggs hatch both parents will feed the chicks. Four weeks after hatching, the chicks are able to make short flights and begin leaving the nest burrow. The parents will still help feed the chicks for 1 to 3 months. While most of the eggs will hatch, only four to five chicks usually survive to leave the nest.
During the nesting season, burrowing owls will line the burrow with mammal dung, usually from cattle. The dung helps to control the microclimate inside the burrow and to attract insects, which the owls may eat (Levey et al. 2004).
Site fidelity rates appear to vary among populations. In some locations, owls will frequently reuse a nest several years in a row. Owls in migratory northern populations are less likely to return to the same burrow every year. Also, as with many other birds, the female owls are more likely to disperse to a different site than are male owls (Lutz & Plumpton 1999).
The highly variable diet includes small mammals, small birds, snakes, lizards, frogs, insects, and scorpions. But the owls mainly eat large insects and small rodents. Although burrowing owls often live in close proximity to ground squirrels, they rarely prey upon them. Unlike other owls, they also eat fruits and seeds, especially the fruit of tasajillo (Cylindropuntia leptocaulis) and other prickly pear and cholla cacti. When hunting they wait on a perch until they spot prey. Then they swoop down on prey or fly up to catch insects in flight. Sometimes they chase prey on foot across the ground.
The burrowing owl is sometimes separated in the monotypic genus Speotyto. This is based on an overall different morphology and karyotype. On the other hand, osteology and DNA sequence data suggests that the Burrowing Owl is just a terrestrial version of the Athene little owls, and it is today placed in that genus by most authorities.
A considerable number of subspecies have been described, but they differ little in appearance and the taxonomy of several needs to be validated (Holt et al. 1999). Most subspecies are found in the Andes and the Antilles. Only A. c. hypugaea and A. c. floridana are found in North America. Although distinct from each other, the relationship of the Floridan subspecies to (and its distinctness from) the Caribbean birds is not quite clear (Korfanta et al. 2005).

Ficha Técnica
Nome comum: coruja-buraqueira, coruja-martelo, coruja-do-campo, caburé-de-cupim, caburé-do-campo, coruja-barata, coruja-buraqueira, coruja-do-campo, coruja-mineira, corujinha-buraqueira, corujinha-do-buraco, corujinha-do-campo, guedé, urucuera, urucuréia e urucuriá.
Nome científico: Speotyto cunicularia
Reino: Animal
Filo: Vertebrado
Classe: Aves
Ordem: Strigiformes

Criminals travelling across the border between Greater Manchester and Cheshire were greeted with more than a surprise on Thursday 26 June 2014, as officers from Greater
Manchester Police and Cheshire Police and took part in Operation Crossbow.
The overall aim of the joint operation was to disrupt illegal activity between the two counties and deny criminals the use of the roads.
By using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras officers were able to monitor virtually every vehicle that crossed between the two counties, stopping all vehicles that were on the roads illegally or were linked to criminal activity.
Cheshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Mark Roberts said: "We know that criminals don′t simply stop when they reach the border, and we also know that there is as strong link between illegal vehicles and other types of serious crime.
"Uninsured drivers are more likely to commit other offences and many of their vehicles are unroadworthy and pose as real danger to other road users.
"Using technology, such as ANPR cameras, we are able to use the intelligence available to us to identify offenders and bring them to justice."
Greater Manchester Police Inspector Matt Bailey-Smith said: "We will not allow the safety of our roads to be compromised by criminals and operations like today will help us achieve our overall aim of keeping criminals off our roads.
"However, offenders across Cheshire and Greater Manchester can be assured that this is not a one-off operation. Our officers patrol the roads 365 days a year and will continue to target criminals."
Operation Crossbow involved more than 200 officers from Cheshire Police and GMP, as well as staff from partner agencies such as the UK Border Agency, Department of Work and Pensions, Her Majesties Revenue and Customs and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.
ANPR cameras are able to monitor more than 3000 number plates every hour and alert officers if a vehicle is linked to known criminals. The cameras also inform officers whether or not the vehicle is taxed & insured.
Both Greater Manchester Police and Cheshire Police and are keen to remind members of the public that they too can help make our roads safer by reporting illegal use of vehicles to the police on 101. Alternatively information can be reported anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

As Able As Kane formed in summer 1987 and were originally a duo - Ding and Paul R .
They were heavily influenced by Jim Thirwell's Foetus and bands like Killing Joke & Revolting Cocks and had
become excited by discovering European acts such as Front 242, The Young Gods and Laibach.
They had precious little equipment and early recordings were heavily reliant upon a collection of junk metal they'd acquired, accompanied by Paul's voice and a drum machine. Ding wouldreluctantly play bass and guitar on some of the pieces.
When Ding started on a sound engineering coursethey met third member, Brendan McGuirk. When he joined the band, he brought a sampler and a couple of decent keyboards into the mix andthe studio school where they were learning gave them access to sequencers and multi-track tape. After writing and recording several tracks at overnight sessions the band started to play live shows and gain a bit of a local fanbase. Several decent reviews later they were lucky to land a recording contract with a young Manchester based record label, Scam Records. It was Scam Records' suggestion that the band shortened their name to AAAK
For Scam, As Able As Kane recorded a 6 track mini-lp entitled "Buildingscape Beat", which is a term they had started to use to describe their music. Buildingscape Beat was recorded towards the end of 1988 and on its release, managed to catch the attention of John Peel and raised the band's profile sufficiently that they were offered another recording deal with the cult Belgian label, KK Records.
The result of this 2nd deal was a 15 track cd/vinyl release called "Big Fist", which saw the band, now minus Brendan, receive a U.S release as well as Europe. The U.K didn't bother too much about AAAK and most of their fan base was overseas. During the final stages of recording of a 3rd album, the band had their Manchester studio and all of their equipment robbed and without suitable insurance were forced to call it a day.
In the summer of 2009 Ding was approached by German E.B.M label, Electric Tremor with the idea of re-issuing AAAK's LPs and possibly a live show or 2 to promote iit. Paul R was consequently tracked down. It had been about 15 years since the duo had seen each other - and the idea of just re-releasing the early material rapidly turned into re-recording he best tracks off the two releases instead. These new recordings were coupled with a collection of unreleased tracks from 1987-1991 re-mastered from cassettes and DAT tapes to form the 2CD release, "The Collection" [2010].
The band played several gigs to promote The Collection and in so doing, found themselves reformed. New material started to be written and over the course of 2011 tracks appeared on compilations, re-mixes were done for other artists and a single/E.P- "Out Here" was recorded and released on Electric Tremor in January 2012
April 2012 saw the release of the bands first LP of new material since 1992. Entitled"Totalitarian Tip-Toe" the ten track album presented the 21st Century with a return of their buildingscape beat style.
The new album features new members Neil R [The Words] on guitars and Tamsin A [Mr Heart] on backing vocals. There are also several tracks featuring live drums provided by Howard J [Lost Harbour].
In August 2012 the band embarked on their highest profile appearances to date, five shows supporting Red Hot Chili Peppers in eastern Europe. For these shows they expanded their live set-up to a 5-piece With Greame S-S [The Words] providing live drums. The surprising billings saw the band receiving great responses from crowds as large as 77,000.
Spurred on by the success they have started to record a new 12 track album for release in spring 2013. This will mark the 25th anniversary of the release of their first record and will be entitled "Buildingscape Beat XXV"

MP 44.... I was eyeing this piece for over a year because at 35,000 Yen plus a hefty shipping fee, it would have ended up being close to $500 CAD after shipping.
But as luck would have it, a few weeks ago I was able to secure this one at a local EB Games, which was about MSRP, but I was able to benefit from a trade in promotion. It wasn't as a pristine box, but hey it's Optimus Prime, and my MP 36 needed a playmate.
So here we have it... the highlights from this figure. Highlights because if I were going to go into full detail, this would probably be an hour long to read.
The set is packed with what you'd expect from an Optimus Prime set, along with a few extra surprises. You get Prime and his trailer, along with a die cast Matrix, Energon supply hose, Roller, and the Repair Bay drone thing that apparently is called an Anti-Aircraft gun this time around.
You also get the Whitwicky's Spike and Sparkplug, along with Carly, three additional heads (cartoon round faced, battle damaged, Starscream with air intakes), his blaster, a damaged waist effect piece,, Energon Axe, two Energon blast effects that double as thruster effects, and the jet pack itself. There's also an adapter so you can use the base that comes with MP Dinobot with this figure, which is yet another expensive one.
Overall, it felt like Takara Tomy decided to pull a Hybrid Convoy and throw the kitchen sink at the set this time, third time and all.
The small figures can be positioned to ride in Prime's cab, on Roller,, within the cockpit of the Repair Drone, as well as several magnet friendly surfaces within the Trailer. Decent articulation on them for the tiny size though they're not going to be winning any likeness awards.
Going kind of in reverse, I'll quickly go over the non robot stuff because quite frankly while it's neat, it's not really my thing when it comes to Prime,
Naturally, the Trailer can be hitched to Prime in Cab mode, and Roller along with the Remote Drone can combine with it in several variations, including the classic Repair Bay. Also like the MP 10 and the Hybrid Convoy trailers, there are legs under the trailer that deploy to give it more stability.
New to the formula is that Roller and the Remote Drone can be linked together, forming a mini Tractor Trailer, and the Remote Drone can be taken off it's arm and combined on top of Roller. Furthermore, this particular iteration of the Trailer comes with a removable under carriage so that you can store all his accessories without cluttering the interior of the Trailer itself.
His Ion Blaster can be folded up and attached to the various components in different ways.
So lets talk about the actual Prime figure itself.
With this relatively recent shift to producing more toon accurate bot modes, it would be an understatement to say that the transformations are becoming more and more complex, mostly because most bot modes don't have wheels hanging out, or other vehicle bits, really. As a result, you pretty much get some really elaborate shell movements along with what is best described as an "inside-out" transformation.
This was the case with the impressive MP 34 Megatron, and it's definitely the case here.
The instructions have the transformation officially pegged at 75 steps, which is why it took me an hour to get it done... well mostly.
Those who have handled MPs will understand it's not just the steps, but rather, how thing some of these parts can be, coupled with the Lord knows how many hinges and joints are in these things. All these factors put together, coupled with how well pretty much everything fits together, is a true testament to the design team, QC, material selection, and price tag. Build quality is generally not an issue with this figure, though I did have some difficultly swapping out heads and the pieces that make up Prime's pelvis are kind of rough. Since we're on Build Quality, joints don't have any issues either or parts finishes.
Paint wise, with the exception of unfortunate areas of paint rub, you're going to get an overall set with great paint applications, with colours chosen by someone who isn't colour blind... or maybe they know how to use the Dropper tool on Photoshop.
The chrome work is a bit uneven in that the surfaces can appear to be slightly warped, especially the silver parts on Prime's feet.
But hey... they're shiny!
When you've finished with transformation, you get a figure that's probably 90% of the way to being truly cartoon accurate. There's the larger than normal backpack, which leads to some back heaviness. Furthermore, proportion wise I feel that Megatron got it closer, as to me Prime's shoulders are bit too small. What makes it even more impressive is that Megatron had to create volume out of thin parts.
Functional Matrix chamber is also a nice touch.
Size wise, MP44 is probably 1/8" taller than MP10, so the sizes are very comparable.
From an articulation perspective, it's definitely no Three A sixth scale figure, but for a figure that can transform it's go pretty much all the right moves. You get ankle tilts and ankle rollers, double jointed knees, thigh twist, hips, waist, ab crunch by pulling the torso off the waist, shoulders with limited lateral movement, biceps swivels, single jointed elbows, rotating wrist with slight bending capabilities, and ball socket at the base of the head.
The hips have a neat design to them - you can't pull them down to get more range of motion, but the waist flap does rotate with the upper leg, so it will naturally move out of the way. Prime also has flaps all around the waist to facilitate maximum range of motion there.
The aforementioned shoulders unfortunately somewhat limit the forward posing capabilities of the arms, the wrists are really not that useful, and the actual waist movement is quite limited without popping the the torso up,
Small ankle spurs also limit the types of dynamic poses the figure can pull of because of the heavy backpack.
Hands are kind of neat, Like with other MP figures with fists (such as Arcee), the index figure is separate from the other three, which are moulded together. Joints are present where these digits meal the palm of the hand, and the fingers have functional joints at the first point outward from the palm. This overall allows you to get a competent looking gun holding hand, along with a decent looking closed fist.
Overall, you'll still have great time playing within the limits, but it's just somewhat of a letdown given how great Megatron turned out.
A few more notes before closing out here. The Prime heads all have functional points on them, and they're pretty thin too, so be mindful of that while handling them. There's also a battery pack, which I've yet to power up, but I believe it's a combination of lights and sounds.
I've been fortunate enough to possess all three MP Optimus Primes, though this is my first Takara version. MP 01 will always remain a classic, despite being a comparatively crude figure... I mean, the thing is about a foot tall transformed and has so much die cast in it you can use it as a weapon of mass destruction.
In the battle of MP 10 versus MP 44, it's really a tough call. It comes down to preference because they both represent high quality versions of the character, just that MP 10 is the toy aesthetic whereas MP 44 is all about that show accuracy. MP 44 undoubtedly pairs with MP 36 much better than MP 10.
I'd say if you got one of those MP 36+ figures, which mimics Megatron's classic toy appearance, you're probably alright sticking with MP 10 from a looks perspective, especially if all you're really into is the bot mode and aren't too fussed about having all those points of articulation.
It's a combination of taste, and price, though there are some insane resellers who are trying to sell MP10 for basically the same price as a MP 44.
Hopefully Toys R Us will do their usual thing, and bring some version of MP 44 to its stores, most likely pulling a Rodimus Prime and ditching the trailer. Still, it would be a good compromise to get the main figure and hopefully keep the glorious paint (it's Toys R Us... you never know).
Now if they'd only make that MP Wheelie that I've always wanted...
The Kaman K-MAX (Company designation K-1200) is an American helicopter with intermeshing rotors (synchropter) built by Kaman Aircraft. It is optimized for external cargo load operations, and is able to lift a payload of over 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg), which is more than the helicopter's empty weight. An optionally remote controlled unmanned aerial vehicle version is being developed and is being evaluated in extended practical service in the war in Afghanistan..
.
In June 2015, Kaman announced restarting the K-MAX production due to 10 commercial orders.[2] First deliveries are planned early 2017.
Unmanned remote control version[edit]
Kaman has been developing the Unmanned K-MAX since 1998. In March 2007, Kaman and Lockheed Martin (Team K-MAX) signed a Strategic Relationship Agreement (SRA) to pursue U.S. DoD opportunities.[21][22] An unmanned mostly autonomously flying, optionally remote controlled and optionally piloted vehicle (OPV) version, the K-MAX Unmanned Multi-Mission Helicopter, was developed for hazardous missions. It can be used in combat to deliver supplies to the battlefield, as well as civilian situations involving chemical, biological, or radiological hazards. A prototype of this was shown in 2008 for potential military heavy-lift resupply use,[23] and again in 2010.[24]
In December 2010 the Naval Air Systems Command awarded a $46 million contract to Kaman for two aircraft,[25] and in 2011 they completed a five-day Quick Reaction Assessment.[26]
In December 2011 an unmanned K-MAX was reported to be at work in Afghanistan.[27] On 17 December 2011, the U. S. Marine Corps conducted the first unmanned aerial system cargo delivery in a combat zone using an unmanned version of the Kaman K-MAX. The unmanned K-MAX moved about 3,500 pounds of food and supplies to troops at Combat Outpost Payne.[28] As of February 2013, the K-MAX had delivered 2 million pounds of cargo in 600 unmanned missions over more than 700 flight hours.[29]
Unmanned K-MAX
A third unmanned K-MAX, based in the U.S., was tested in 2012 to deliver cargo to a small homing beacon with three-meter precision.[30]
On July 31, 2012, Lockheed announced a second service extension for the K-MAX in Afghanistan for the Marines. This extended operations to the end of March 2013, with the option to extend to the end of September 2013.[31] On 18 March 2013, the Marine Corps extended its use of the unmanned K-MAX helicopters indefinitely. The Corps does not currently have plans to buy more, but the two aircraft in use would remain "until otherwise directed". At the time of the announcement, they had flown over 1,000 missions and hauled over three million pounds of supplies. Assessments for their use after deployment are being studied. While proving useful, their "niche" in future Marine Corps aviation is not yet clear.[32]
The unmanned K-MAX has won awards from Popular Science and Aviation Week & Space Technology,[33] and was nominated for the 2012 Collier Trophy.[34]
On June 5, 2013, one of the unmanned K-MAX helicopters crashed in Afghanistan while resupplying Marines. No injuries occurred and the crash was investigated. Pilot error was ruled out, as the aircraft was flying autonomously to a predetermined point. The crash happened during the final stages of cargo delivery.[35] Operational flights of the remaining unmanned K-MAX were suspended following the crash. On August 14, 2013, the Navy said the K-MAX could resume flying by the following week, with the final decision resting with operational commanders. The week before, the K-MAX flew 16 hours. Swing load was seen as the prime cause of the crash. The Marine Corps is considering turning the K-MAX into a program of record, with possible uses including ship-to-shore deliveries.[36] The investigation determined that the crash was not caused by mechanical problems,[37] but by unexpected tailwinds. As the helicopter was making a routine food delivery, it experienced tailwinds instead of headwinds, causing it to begin oscillating. Operators employed a weathervane effect to try and regain control, but its 2,000 lb load began to swing, which exacerbated the effect and caused it to contact the ground. The crash report determined that it could have been prevented if pilots intervened earlier and mission planned received updated weather reports; diverging conditions and insufficient programming meant it could not recover on its own and required human intervention.[38]
At the 2013 Paris Air Show, Kaman promoted the unmanned K-MAX to foreign buyers. Several countries have reportedly expressed interest in the system.[39]
The K-MAX supporting Marines in Afghanistan was planned to remain in use there until at least August 2014. The Marine Corps is looking into acquiring the unmanned K-MAX as a program of record, and the U.S. Army is also looking into it to determine cost-effectiveness. If it is accepted into service, the adapted commercial rotorcraft would re-enter production and Kaman would reopen the facility to build it. Lockheed and Kaman estimate re-establishing the line would take nine months, with the first aircraft delivered three months later. In theater, the unmanned K-MAX performed most missions at night and successfully lifted loads of up to 4,500 lb (2,000 kg). Hook-ups of equipment were performed in concert with individuals on the ground, but Lockheed is looking into performing this action automatically. It is building a device to be mounted atop the package that the helicopter can hook up to by itself, and this feature was demonstrated in 2013.[40] Other features are being examined, including the ability to be automatically re-routed in flight, and to fly in formation with other aircraft.[41]
The House Armed Services Committee has shown its support for the unmanned K-MAX. It has urged the Army to look into the cargo UAV concept, as 30,000 lb (13,600 kg) of cargo were successfully delivered in one day over the course of six missions (average 5,000 lb (2,270 kg) transported cargo per mission). Lockheed and Kaman have discussed the purchasing of 16 helicopters with the Navy and Marine Corps for a baseline start to the program.[37]
The unmanned K-MAX is competing with the Boeing H-6U Little Bird for the Marine Corps unmanned lift/ISR capability.[42] In April 2014, Marines at Quantico announced they successfully landed an unmanned K-MAX, as well as a Little Bird, autonomously using an iPad-like mini-tablet. The helicopters were equipped with Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System (AACUS) technology, which combines advanced algorithms with LIDAR and electro-optical/infrared sensors to enable a user to select a point to land the helicopter at an unprepared landing site.[43] The Office of Naval Research selected Aurora Flight Sciences and the Unmanned Little Bird to complete development of the prototype AACUS system, but Lockheed is continuing to promote the K-MAX and develop autonomous cargo delivery systems.[44]
Both unmanned K-MAX helicopters in use by the Marine Corps returned to the United States in May 2014, when the Corps determined that they were no longer needed to support missions in Afghanistan. After deploying in December 2011, originally planned for six months, it stayed for almost three years and lifted 2,250 tons of cargo. The aircraft were sent to Lockheed's Oswego facility in New York, while the service contemplated the possibility of turning the unmanned K-MAX from a proof-of-concept project into a program of record. Formal requirements for unmanned aerial cargo delivery are being written to address expected future threats, including electronic attack, cyber warfare, and effective hostile fire; these were avoided in Afghanistan quickly and cheaply by flying at night at high altitudes against an enemy with no signal degradation capabilities.[45][46] Officials are assessing the K-MAX model that crashed and plan to repair it in 2015. Until then, the helicopters, ground control stations, and additional equipment will be stored at Lockheed's facility in Oswego. Renewed flight demonstrations were planned for 2015 to show their continued utility for Marine Corps missions, including small-unit responses and amphibious operations in the Pacific theater.[47]
Lockheed Martin demonstrated a firefighting version in November 2014,[19] and again in October 2015, when it delivered over 24,000 pounds (11,000 kg) water in one hour.[48][49] A casualty evacuation exercise was performed in March 2015 in coordination with an unmanned ground vehicle and mission planning system.[50] A medic launched the UGV to evaluate the casualty, then used a tablet to call in and automatically land the K-MAX. The medic strapped a mannequin to a seat aboard the helicopter, which then flew to a safe area.[51] The two unmanned K-MAXs, designated the CQ-24A, were to be moved to a Marine Corps base in Arizona by the end of September 2015 to develop tactics and operations concepts to inform an official program of record for a cargo UAV. Lockheed continues to favor the K-MAX as their platform offering and an aircraft could enter service by 2022.[52]
My mother's elder brother Gordon died in 1948. We'd always heard vague stories of his death at sea; I was somehow under the impression that he was training as a Royal Navy pilot when his plane crashed. Mom's younger brother Alan recently did some research into Gordon's passing, however, and found that his story was at once less glamorous and more touching than we imagined - here are highlights of what Alan's research dug up:
Gordon was in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, 1942-46; he served on a destroyer, HMS Jervis (Alan called it the Jarvis, but there were no RN destroyers named that), and was demmobed (demobilized) in 1946. He then went into the building trade in Norwich. However, in 1947 he lost his job in layoffs due to bad weather, so he re-joined the Navy (he was engaged to a girl named Joyce H., so apparently he needed the money). This time Gordon was stationed on a carrier, HMS Triumph. Uncle Alan was curious to find out more about Gordon's service and how he died.
A magazine called the " Navy News" published an email Alan sent them seeking information about Gordon, and from that he had several phone calls and contacts of Naval personnel who served on the carrier at the same time as Gordon. Unfortunately, no one could remember him. However, he had a phone call late one evening some two weeks after the initial calls from a good friend of Gordon’s named Joe Hosie, who described the details of the accident.
Gordon’s job on the carrier was that of an aircraft handler, seeing planes on and off the deck (Able Seaman). It appears that the ground crew were given an opportunity to have a flight in one of the fighter/bomber aircraft, when things were quiet on deck; their names were put into a hat for a drawing. Gordon’s name came out of the hat, and the flight took place on Sunday 26th July 1948. At noon the plane took off, but it developed engine trouble some time into the flight. The pilot, LT. Commander L. Morris, tried to return to the carrier, but he ended up having to ditch some 15 miles away. The carrier launched a Sea Otter search-and-rescue plane, which landed on the sea and picked up the pilot, who was alive... Unfortunately, Gordon was not. The rescue plane itself could not take off due to the rough sea and had to be hoisted onto a battle ship that had arrived on the scene before the carrier did.
Gordon was buried at sea the same day as the accident, with full military honours.
Joe, who sent Alan the photo and a covering letter, told him that Gordon was always happy, as were all the crew on the ship - in his words, “it was a happy ship."
Uncle Gordon looks so tan and handsome in this picture. I can imagine how excited he was on that summer day to have won a ride on one of the planes he spent his days herding around the deck (was it the first time he'd flown, I wonder?), totally unaware of the irony of feeling lucky as he climbed aboard and rose into the air.
Anyway, I hope Gordon would be glad to know that his family still remembers him.
We made a short notice booking to Copenhagen, Jayne had the first week in September booked off and we wanted to try and do a city break. Five nights hardly seemed enough but the short flight was ok. We flew over home heading east on a beautiful morning. I love flying over an area that I know and being able to see it from above. We had been warned that Copenhagen was expensive-it was! I hadn’t done any research before we set off but on the flight over, I read that taxis were expensive, so it was best to use the Metro from the airport, it isn’t far in to the city and the Metro was fairly easy to use. However! We should have caught the train, I read this whist we were sat on the Metro it has to be said! The nearest Metro stop, which I was frantically trying to work out, using my phone, travelling in and out of tunnels, turned out to be a 1.5 mile walk from our hotel, the rail station was .5. Never mind we were there to walk-subject to my lately diagnosed arthritic ankle, we just didn’t want to be towing suitcases over cobbled pavements at the same time.
We were staying in the Tivoli Hotel which was described as central, it is near Central Station but you wouldn’t describe it as central to the city. Our room wasn’t ready but we could upgrade for a modest amount plus we realised it would be a good idea to include breakfast in the upgrade deal. A good move as it turned out. Our room overlooked the train lines-all twelve of them!! We could already hear train brakes squealing along with the thump thump of steel wheels rolling over points and joints. It’s true to say that Central Station is a 24/7 operation. The overnight noise didn’t bother Jayne but I could hear it all night.
We dumped our stuff and I loaded up with the backpack and camera and we were straight out there. Copenhagen is a relatively small city but there is a lot to see. We were soon finding out that it has an extensive network of canals and bridges and these are a major feature of life in the city. Pan flat, the cyclist rules, There appeared to be twice as many bikes as residents, with countless thousands propped up everywhere you went. Where ever you looked there was silent conveyor of sit up and beg cycles being ridden in all directions. You soon got used to looking over your shoulder before making a move. The vast majority of bikes are left unlocked and almost no one wears a helmet ( I’m a no helmet man, much to the annoyance of the helmet zealots). Copenhagen is reputedly the happiest place in the world and it certainly came across as friendly and relaxed. It is, though, one of the most expensive cities in the world and two burgers and two small glasses of wine at Nyhavn cost us £50. Comically, there were four people, local to us, shouting out Jayne’s name, they had seen us going past and we had a laugh about the prices, They were sat drinking beer at £8.50 a pint. Despite the expense, the place was packed with people parting with their money. Wages are very high locally, as are the taxes. The high wages and high costs must feed each other in an upward spiral I would have thought.
Unfortunately the cost of entering buildings to go up towers etc. for a higher view of the city was also very expensive (to us). The tower at Christiansborg Palace is free but restricted by the lift system and you don’t get to the top, it does also open later than the others so you have a chance of seeing sunset over the city. Unfortunately the lifts were out of order on one of our best weather days. We did get to go up the day after but it was dull and I wasn’t overly impressed. The spiral tower across in Christiana, The Church of Our Saviour, was far more impressive. We climbed the tower here just after it opened on a stunning morning and the views are fantastic. There will be incredible bottlenecks when it’s busy though on the corkscrew stairs that get progressively narrower towards the top. Some people hog it to take endless selfies at the top and it is extremely tight up there, you can’t move up until they come down.
As usual, we tried to get to some out of the way places, with only five days and mixed weather though we had enough mainstream destinations to see. We had a day of heavy rain so we went back to the rail station which was a good indoor (and free!) destination, and made umbrellas and the rain the focal point of that days photos. The entire Danish navy seemed to be at anchor, we just missed an open day on one ship. Some I could photograph, others were guarded and had restrictions, I got the evil eye from a couple of guards as the spotted the big Canon in my hand. I can’t imagine that they could police the Japanese and stop them from getting their photos and selfies though. I always act very openly with the camera and if people look at me suspiciously I smile and give them the thumbs up. In a rail station I usually ask the police. In Central Station the police were in their station and I never saw one move out, it is covered by extensive CCTV but there were some very unpleasant people, drinking and watching for people being careless with their belongings. We were lucky to be in the station on Sunday as a tourist steam train arrived, it sat at the platform belching smoke and steam for fifteen minutes, it was also coming back in an hour so we had an expensive coffee and waited to see it again. There was big military event outside the Christiansborg Palace on Monday, with a parade through the city that came past just as we were in a good spot to view it. The area was full of soldiers wearing their medals. We haven’t discovered the reason, although someone suggested a passing out parade for new recruits. Maybe the ships were in port for this as well.
Tivoli Gardens is another big draw and we went in, again it was fairly expensive, it had been a stunning day and the biggest problem was contrast, with deep shadows and a bright blue sky. We stayed until dark, it opens late and is very colourful. We went on the world’s highest carousel and got flung around 260 odd feet in the air. Luckily, we also found a bar that served wine at ‘only’ £5.60 a glass so we sat and watched people have fun screaming and shrieking above us.
There are many buildings with copper domes, entire copper roofs, even modern buildings are often clad in either brass or copper to blend in with the ancient buildings around them. Like every city we have visited, tower cranes are in abundance. There is a lot of development going on and unfortunately a lot of it is around buildings that you would want to photograph. We walked 12 to 14 mile every day and took in most of the sights. We didn’t really do any interiors, only towers and the railway station. At the time of writing I haven’t looked at what I’ve got, I have around 3000 shots, some on the G1X which I used when it was raining heavily as it easy to put in a pocket. I have a lot less time for editing these days so it will be a long process I think. To save time I am going to create a list of generic tags that I can copy and paste to each upload – the time saving is enormous – so apologies to anyone who gets a photo of a canal when they wanted a steam train or vice versa.
Sauerbier Ranches LLC, where producer Dan Doornbos (vest) and son-in-law ranch operator Ryan Ellis, were able to implement brush management practices and install a solar-powered (photovoltaic) electric well pump and distribution system with the help of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources and Conservation Service (NRCS) John Wagoner (cowboy hat), at Sweetwater Basin, in southwest Montana, on August 27, 2019. Brush management practice has opened the rangeland for cattle to better graze and improve the land. On other parts of the ranches, well pumps draw water from the aquifer below a creek. The pump pushes water through pipelines, up to rangelands more than two miles away to draw cattle to a variety of grazing areas. This improves the water quality by drawing the cattle from the nearby flowing creek; provides more water from a more stable underground water resource; allows the land to rest from the presence of the cattle; allows the manure to return to the soil so that the plants can better grow back, and provides drinking water for the cattle in remote rangelands.
Brush Management is the management or removal of woody (non-herbaceous or succulent) plants including those that are invasive and noxious. This creates the desired plant community consistent with the ecological site or a desired state within the site description; restores or release desired vegetative cover to protect soils, control erosion, reduce sediment, improve water quality, or enhance hydrology.• Maintain, modify, or enhance fish and wildlife habitat; improves forage accessibility, quality, and quantity for livestock and wildlife; Manages fuel loads to achieve desired conditions; controls pervasive plant species to a desired level of treatment that will ultimately contribute to creation or maintenance of an ecological site description “steady-state” addressing the need for forage, wildlife habitat, and/or water quality.
Pumping Plant is a facility that delivers water at a designed pressure and flow rate. Includes the required pump(s), associated power unit(s), plumbing, appurtenances, and may include on-site fuel or energy source(s), and protective structures.

This week I was able to run up to Magee Marsh for the first time with a couple of close family friends from Indiana.
For those that have never been there before, Magee Marsh sits on the shores of Lake Erie and is one of the largest migratory bird stops for warblers in the country. One of it's highlights is a 3/4 mile raised wooden boardwalk through the marsh that lets you get incredibly close to an amazing variety of warblers and songbirds.
One of the biggest things I was impressed with other than the birds was that even with the hundreds of birders and photographers crowding the boardwalk, people were universally polite and helpful, pointing out birds, making room for others to get photographs and just enjoying the experience.
If you have never been to a large-scale birding festival before, I highly recommend giving Magee Marsh a try!
People won't be able to walk miles on end had it not been for that dude who did a good snow job plowing away those white powders from heaven. I first heard the portable machine from 26th floor of my room and saw thru my window that hardy dude. I asked what's the point it was still snowing and soon enough the walkways will be covered again. But I guess that's just the rule here. Be safe everyone.
New and beginning farmers are able to receive education, experience and support from the Agricultural Land Based Training Association (ALBA), whose graduates of their Farmer Education Course (PEPA) can then move on to agricultural related careers or continue a farming association for up to five incubator years where they can rent farm land, at their 100-acre facility in Salinas, Ca., on Nov. 14, 2018.
The Agricultural Land Based Training Association (ALBA) is a training program that helps low income farmworkers and others learn how to become farmers. New farmers begin with a series of classroom courses and on-hands training, and graduate to farming their own piece of land on the farm. Eventually these new graduates hope to become successful farmers.
ALBAâs Farmer Education and Enterprise Development (FEED) Program educates and trains new farmer-entrepreneurs to plan, launch, and establish viable organic farm businesses or advance their careers. To accomplish this, ALBA has 100 acres of organic land, an experienced team with diverse expertise, and a hands-on, 5-year farmer development program. FEED is comprised of three main components:
1.The Farmer Education Course (PEPA) is a one year, bilingual, 300-hour curriculum featuring classroom instruction and field-based training, readying participants to launch an organic farm business.
2.The Organic Farm Incubator allows course graduates to launch their farm on ALBAâs land. Starting at ½ acre, farmers gradually scale up to 5 acres over 4 years under ALBAâs supervision before transitioning to fully independent farming.
3.ALBA Organics, aggregates, markets and ships participantsâ products to growing markets around California. Doing so gives farmers access to clients that would otherwise be out of reach and allows them to focus on growing and business management in their initial years.
For more information about PEPA please see www.albafarmers.org/programs/
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Farm Production and Conservation (FPAC) is the USDAâs focal point for the nationâs farmers and ranchers and other stewards of private agricultural lands and non-industrial private forest lands. FPAC agencies implement programs designed to mitigate the significant risks of farming through crop insurance services, conservation programs and technical assistance, and commodity, lending, and disaster programs. The FPAC team includes, Farm Service Agency (FSA) (www.fsa.usda.gov/), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) (www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/site/national/home/), and Risk Management Agency (RMA) (www.rma.usda.gov/).
USDA FPAC Farm Service Agency (FSA) is equitably serving all farmers, ranchers, and agricultural partners through the delivery of effective, efficient agricultural programs for all Americans. FSA is a customer-driven agency with a diverse and multi-talented work force, dedicated to achieving an economically and environmentally sound future for American Agriculture. The vision is to be a market-oriented, economically and environmentally sound American agriculture delivering an abundant, safe, and affordable food and fiber supply while sustaining quality agricultural communities.
Here, FSA works with non-profit organizations such as ALBA to provide program information and outreach to beginning farmers, socially disadvantaged farmers and limited income farmers. ALBA works with a unique farmer base of nontraditional, diverse and beginning farmers.
FSA staff has worked with ALBA for many years in the following ways:
1. Provide classroom training to new ALBA students at the ALBA farm during their regular coursework. FSA provides training on:
a. How to apply for a farm loan and prepare a cash flow statement.
b. How to apply for FSA programs that help with risk management on the farm, such as the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) or other regional crop insurance options.
c. How to apply for Disaster Assistance through FSA in case of an adverse weather event or other emergency.
2. FSA has provided micro loans, operating loans and ownership loans to help ALBA farmers become independent and successful in their operations. FSA has provided Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) and Noninsured Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) payments to these farmers.
3. FSA has provided bookkeeping training courses to ALBA students, on farm tours, and has helped students apply for USDA scholarships to attend agricultural conferences and other trainings.
4. FSA has referred ALBA farmers to NRCS for help with resource management issues.
âThese farmers are the future face of American Agriculture. It is so important for FSA to help them get a strong start in ensuring the success of their operations, said FSA County Executive Director Vivian Soffa. Carlos will need support when he graduates from ALBA and hopefully FSA will be able to assist him with his capital needs when he is farming on his own in this very competitive agriculture market. Familiarity with FSAâs programs at the beginning of a new farmerâs endeavor may be the difference between success and failure.â

Should be able to see most of it if you open the larger size. And there is actually a box of books that has been misplaced somewhere. You may notice a distinct dearth of books between J and S.
Based on a standard Polaroid 420 Automatic Land Camera, this camera has been extensively modified to be able to shoot at professional standards.
The original f8.8 lens and automatic shutter have been replaced with a German made, 1960's Agfa Agnar, 105mm, f6.3, coated glass lens, mounted in a Vario size 00 shutter. The shutter features full X-sync for flash, cable release socket and bulb mode, making it perfect for shooting in all scenarios. The mechanical nature of the shutter also means that the camera no longer requires batteries!
The new 105mm lens is not only faster than the original lens, but also much sharper. It features a beautifully shallow depth of field when wide open, with lovely bokeh. Coverage is 100% full frame, with no noticeable vignetting. This makes the camera the perfect choice for anyone wanting manual control over their shots, on a totally unique camera.
Features:
- Agfa Agnar, 105mm, f6.3 coated glass lens
- Vario shutter, with bulb mode, cable release and X-sync for flash, range from 1/200th to bulb mode
- Aperture range from f6.3 to above f22
- twin window rangefinder/viewfinder with projected framelines and automatic parallax compensation rangefinder/viewfinder
- Cold shoe mount for flash and other accessories
- Custom mounted tripod socket, made of solid aluminium
- Folding bellows design
- Neck strap
- Storage area at the back of the camera, for cleaning cloths etc
- Custom scarlet red accents
- Compatible with ALL Type 100 films, such as Fuji FP-100C and FP-3000B, as well as expired Polaroid brand films.
The 105mm AGFA lens has been mounted and focus optimized for coupling to the original 114mm rangefinder. Both portrait distances and infinity settings are tack sharp.
The body of the camera has been fitted with a custom made tripod socket, made from a solid block of aluminium. I actually cannot claim credit for this, as it was installed on the camera by its previous owner. I did make it look a little neater though, and added a third mounting screw.
Lastly, the camera has been finished cosmetically with some snazzy scarlet red accents, which give the camera it's name (scharlach is the German word for scarlet).

Field Trip - Bramfield Woods - 09/07/19
We returned to Bramfield Park Woods last Tuesday... well the other's did.
My car broke down on the way, a mere mile away from the site, and so hoping my father-in-law would be able to fix it, he was called and on his way to rescue me.
Unfortunately he wasn't quite fully equipped for the job, and so a trip back to Wheathampstead and then back again with a drill and some bolts to secure the intake pipe and luckily the car survived to live another day.
I arrived at the site at 10:30pm and it was already dark under cloudy warm and humid conditions, the moths were everywhere and it took seconds for the moths to respond to each light as I fired them up, one after another.
The temperature was still 24 degrees and not set to get below 17 all night, crazy... and yes it was a bit.
With an estimated 1500 moths over 6 traps it was a busy night and we had to decide to start packing up at around 1am for fear of still being on site at 4am.
I left at 2:45am and felt frazzled after the drama of earlier and the frantic action around the moth traps.
Below is the list, it's rather lengthy and features a mammoth 270 species, one of my highest species count in one night.
One moth was new to me (Acleris logiana) and another was my first Hertfordshire record and only my second ever record (Carpatolechia alburnella).
Other ood species were, Gelechia nigra (4th County record, having caught the previous two from my garden), Capperia britanniodactyla, Kent Black Arches (3 examples( and Small Angle Shades (rare this end of Herts).
Here is the total list.
Macro Moths : 136 species
Micro Moths : 134 species

I'm never able to remember, when shopping for wine, which ones I liked, which I didn't, and often even which I've tried. So last year I started photographing the bottles with the intention of adding brief notes as soon as I tried them. This hasn't worked out — I now have a substantial collection of digital photographs of wine bottles, but can't remember which I enjoyed. At least I know which ones I've tried, so I've been trying to keep it up.
Notro's 2008 Sangiovese-Bonardo, for the record, starts out sickly-sweet and moves on to smoky and sappy.* I didn't want to make the mistake of purchasing it a second time, so I jotted down a few adjectives on the back of a receipt and set about to photograph the bottle when Pluto surreptitiously jumped up and curled herself around it. (She's usually quite coy when I'm trying to photograph her, so this is yet more evidence of the contrariness of cats.)
There really are quite a lot of wine bottles on the kitchen counter.
* Technically, this is the first wine review I've recorded and published, so my project is finally starting to work out.
Why, you might ask, if the wine was so unpleasant, is the bottle empty? Because it's perfectly adequate for cooking, and, in particular, for making my patented** peanut-butter chocolate almond milk.
** It isn't actually patented.
