A historical street in Gion, Kyoto Japan.

Gion Hanasaki, a Kyo-ryori restaurant per the lighted sign “花吹” overhead.

Light from the chochin lantern stained the wet ground beneath bright red. The ground is wet from ritualistic sprinkling of water known as Uchimizu (打ち水). The dango (団子) pattern on the lantern is typically a feature of Gion.

This ancient street with preserved buildings from a bygone era always exudes a sense of mystery at night.

Handheld shot with FE 85mm f1.4 GM.

So the global shutter has finally arrived to Full Frame camera in the Sony A9III.

What interests me though is not the sensor this time since I have no need for such speeds given what I mostly shoot.

Sony looks to have finally designed a nice grip and in particular the shutter button placement in the A9III. The old A7RII did have a downward sloping shutter button but the grip was a tad short for those with large hands leaving their pinkie dangling. Then came A7RIV (following A9II) with a taller grip but the shutter button had to be placed rather flatly in order to accommodate the taller grip, my shutter finger wasn’t comfortable with this design. Sony has finally fixed this with an extra bump on top of the grip in the A9III to allow the shutter button to slope downwards once more with the taller grip.

Although we often see the sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) outside our house, I love to travel the two hours to Marnardal to get photos like this of them from a hide during autumn, in addition to golden eagles during winter.

I will do so again in the end of next weekend, together with good photography friends. We have also orderer a lovely local two-course dinner for the first day. I really look forward to it!

And while talking about birds of prey:

Yesterday as I arrived the bird station and our lighthouse, a young gyrfalcon (jaktfalk in Norwegian) sat right behind the lighthouse, watching its prey- a common guillemot it had killed (lomvi). I have only seen gyrfalcons once- in a nest far away this summer, so it was awesome to have it that close for several hours. Luckily it ate its prey as I sat on the other side of the lighthouse, counting migratory birds.

Swietelsky 37405 & snowplough ADB965209 coasts through Two Mile Bottom, Thetford Forest on Sunday 2nd February 2025. The orange 'Tractor' has spent the weekend moving the independent snowplough to Norfolk after time spent stabled at Eastriggs MOD Sidings. The previous day, it ran as 7Z36, Eastriggs MOD sidings to Doncaster West, with the rest of the 45mph maximum journey completed today. There is some irony in this movement, with a hint of spring on offer from the warm afternoon sunshine.

The red-rumped swallow (Cecropis daurica) is a small passerine bird in the swallow family. It breeds in open hilly country of temperate southern Europe and Asia from Portugal and Spain to Japan, India, Sri Lanka and tropical Africa. The Indian and African birds are resident, but European and other Asian birds are migratory. They winter in Africa or India. The red-rumped swallow is extending its range northward in Europe, colonising France and Romania in recent decades. The European population is estimated at 100,000 to 430,000 breeding pairs or 300,000 to 1,290,000 individuals. (wkipedia)

Red-rumped Swallow is a scarce visitor to Britain & Ireland. Some individuals arrive in spring, overshooting their more southerly breeding sites, but others are reported from mid- to late-autumn.

I saw a lot of Red-rumped Swallows at the farmland around Vilamoura, Portugal on a family holiday in July 2024. Beautiful birds. This is a juvenile.

As I was walking back to the front door from photographing the bees on the globe thistle flowers, these bright yellow black-eyed susans caught my eye. Forgetting to change my settings from the previous shaded area, I went ahead and snapped a few shots. I thought the high key treatment ultimately made for an interesting image.

The European Stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a subspecies of the Common Stonechat. Long considered a member of the thrush family Turdidae, genetic evidence has placed it and its relatives in the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae. It is slightly smaller than the European Robin. Both sexes have distinctively short wings. The summer male has black upperparts, a black head, an orange throat and breast, and a white belly and vent. It also has white half-collar on the sides of its neck, a small white scapular patch on the wings, and a very small white patch on the rump often streaked with black. European Stonechats breed in heathland, coastal dunes and rough grassland with scattered small shrubs and bramble, open gorse, tussocks or heather. They are short-distance migrants or non-migratory. The male's song is high and twittering like a Dunnock. Both sexes have a clicking call like stones knocking together. Saxicola rubicola hibernans occurs in northwestern Europe in Atlantic coastal areas, in southwestern Norway, Great Britain, Ireland and northwestern France. (wikipedia)
