Shorebirds of Ireland, Freshwater Birds of Ireland and The Birds of Ireland: A Field Guide 2nd Edition with Jim Wilson.

www.markcarmodyphotography.com

The yellow-crowned night heron (Nyctanassa violacea), is one of two species of night heron in genus Nyctanassa. Unlike the black-crowned night heron, which has a worldwide distribution, the yellow-crowned is restricted to the Americas. It is s a rather stocky wading bird, ranging from 55 to 70 cm and from 650 to 850 g (1.43–1.87 lb), the females being a little smaller than the males. The yellow-crowned night heron has a wingspan ranging from 101 to 112 cm. The neck, slim when extended, exposes its large head (compared to its body), with a large and heavy bill.

The body and back are a smooth grey-blue, with a black scaled pattern on the wings. The long legs are yellow and turn coral, pink or red during courtship. The most characteristic part of the yellow-crowned night heron is the head: black and glossy, with white cheeks and a pale yellow crown going from the bill, between the eyes and to the back of the head, giving the bird its common name. Such colours make the face appear striped in a horizontal black-white-black-white pattern. Long, thin, white feathers grow to the back of the crown during mating season. The bill, also black, is thick and deeply set under the eyes which are dark orange or red.

Subspecies and populations that are insular or live in warmer areas are confirmed to be sedentary. The tropical subspecies and populations migrate, but to an extent that is still unclear for lack of data. Migration occurs in mid-March in lower latitude, and from mid-March to April in higher latitude. (wikipedia)

New of this species turning up in Belcarra, an inland village in Co. Mayo, sent the Irish birdwatching world into a tizzy. I managed to get to see the bird a week after it was reported. It seems to have been present for quite a while, and probably since last autumn's storms. Only the 2nd record for Europe (a bird was in Portugal in 2020). A fantastic sight in a most beautiful setting. Worth leaving the house at 2.30am for!

The Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca) is a large shorebird in the family Scolopacidae. It breeds in central Canada and southern Alaska and winters in southern North America, Central America, the West Indies and South America.

The greater yellowlegs is similar in appearance to the smaller lesser yellowlegs. Its closest relative, however, is the greenshank, which together with the spotted redshank form a close-knit group.

Adults have long yellow legs and a long, thin, dark bill which has a slight upward curve and is longer than the head. The body is grey-brown on top and white underneath; the neck and breast are streaked with dark brown. The rump is white. It ranges in length from 29 to 40 cm (11 to 16 in) and in weight from 111 to 250 g (3.9 to 8.8 oz). Wingspan is 23.6 in (60 cm).

These birds forage in shallow water, sometimes using their bills to stir up the water. They mainly eat insects and small fish, as well as crustaceans, marine worms, frogs, seeds and berries. (wikipedia)

This is Ireland's 16th record of this fantastic wader, so an incredibly rare bird here. It is the first time I have ever seen the species anywhere, so I was thrilled to see it so well. What an amazing find by Stephen Delaney. I wonder is it the same bird seen earlier in the year in Co. Kildare?

The Black Guillemot or Tystie (Cepphus grylle) is a medium-sized alcid.

Adult birds have black bodies with a white wing patch, a thin dark bill, and red legs and feet. They show white wing linings in flight. In winter, the upperparts are pale grey and the underparts are white. The wings remain black with the large white patch on the inner wing.

Their breeding habitat is rocky shores, cliffs and islands on northern Atlantic coasts in eastern North America as far south as Maine, and in western Europe as far south as Ireland. They are one of the few birds to breed on Surtsey, Iceland a new volcanic island. In the UK it is a fairly common breeding bird in western and northern Scotland and Ireland. In the rest of Great Britain they only breed at St. Bees Head in Cumbria, the Isle of Man and on east Anglesey in north Wales. Some birds breed in Alaska where their range overlaps with the similar Pigeon Guillemot.

These birds often overwinter in their breeding areas, moving to open waters if necessary, but usually not migrating very far south.

They dive for food from the surface, swimming underwater. They mainly eat fish and crustaceans, also some mollusks, insects and plant material. (wikipedia)

The Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) is a small white heron. Until the 1950s, the Little Egret was restricted to southern Europe. Over the next few decades it became increasingly common in western France and later on the north coast. It bred in the Netherlands in 1979 with further breeding in the 1990s.

In Ireland, the species bred for the first time in 1997 at a site in County Cork.

This adult egret was feeding in the gloaming at Broadmeadows Estuary, Co. Dublin.

Today we sadly said goodbye to our 85 year old oak tree. I love trees and I hate that we had to do it, but it was pretty much hollowed out and one more big storm, it probably would have fallen on our house.

I'm really enjoying the new camera gear.

A female Osprey leaves the nest after her mate brings her half a fish, but I think she mistakenly also grabbed a stick (from the nest) 😊. From my observations, when the male Osprey brings her something to eat, she doesn't want to share and takes the fish to another spot to eat. This occurred every time... They are also mating throughout the day, so... I suppose that burns a lot of calories 😂

(oh... and I'm pretty sure the male Osprey already knew she wasn't sharing so he ate half of it prior to coming home 😂)

In addition to the Steller's jay in the previous upload, a little gray jay (now called Canada jay, I believe) stopped by for a visit too and posed very nicely for me, my Sony a9ii and 200-600mm lens.

On a side note, the 200-600 is heavy for my small hands, but because of steady shot (image stabilization) and because of the speed of the camera, most of my shots, even handheld, turned out very nicely.

Juvenile photographed in Starr Co., TX

One of the sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus) that I photographed during the weekend two weeks ago.

(Spurvehauk in Norwegian)

Today I was lucky to see another raptor for the first time; the rare hen harrier (myrhauk in Norwegian) - right outside our house!

I was really lucky to already sit outside, photographing the birds by the feeder when it appeared for only a few seconds. But I managed to be fast and captured some photos good enough for documentation. Really exciting- since I first thought it was a sparrowhawk like we are used to having around here.

And as if that wasn't enough - two days ago a peregrine falcon (vandrefalk in Norwegian) flew right in front of me that I got even better photos of - right outside our house as well ツ

I wonder what's next 😉

As I was walking back to the front door from photographing the bees on the globe thistle flowers, these bright yellow black-eyed susans caught my eye. Forgetting to change my settings from the previous shaded area, I went ahead and snapped a few shots. I thought the high key treatment ultimately made for an interesting image.

A historical street in Gion, Kyoto Japan.

Gion Hanasaki, a Kyo-ryori restaurant per the lighted sign “花吹” overhead.

Light from the chochin lantern stained the wet ground beneath bright red. The ground is wet from ritualistic sprinkling of water known as Uchimizu (打ち水). The dango (団子) pattern on the lantern is typically a feature of Gion.

This ancient street with preserved buildings from a bygone era always exudes a sense of mystery at night.

Handheld shot with FE 85mm f1.4 GM.

So the global shutter has finally arrived to Full Frame camera in the Sony A9III.

What interests me though is not the sensor this time since I have no need for such speeds given what I mostly shoot.

Sony looks to have finally designed a nice grip and in particular the shutter button placement in the A9III. The old A7RII did have a downward sloping shutter button but the grip was a tad short for those with large hands leaving their pinkie dangling. Then came A7RIV (following A9II) with a taller grip but the shutter button had to be placed rather flatly in order to accommodate the taller grip, my shutter finger wasn’t comfortable with this design. Sony has finally fixed this with an extra bump on top of the grip in the A9III to allow the shutter button to slope downwards once more with the taller grip.
