The lavish interior of the 3rd largest mosque in the world ,the Grand Mosque of Abu Dabi,Emirates. The main hall can hold 9,000 ,with the world`s largest carpet at 5,627 sq m ( weight 47 tons & employed 1200 weavers ). There are 7 huge chandeliers ,the biggest (world record again) being 15m high &10 m dia. all gold plated on copper .Opened in autumn 2007 & cost $ 545 million !!!!

ENJOY THE WORLD.....!!!!

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, and is considered to be the key site for worship in the country. Wikipedia

Part of this truly amazing building in Abu Dhabi.Covered in pure white marble,it was built with no cost spared. Some of the 54 domes can be seen, with the one on the right being the largest dome in the world.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (Arabic: جامع الشيخ زايد الكبير‎) - today the mosque is called "Mariam, Umm Eisa", the Arabic name of "Mary the Mother of Jesus".

The carpet in the main prayer hall is the world's largest carpet. Designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi, this carpet measures 5,627 m² and was made by around 1200 carpet knotters. The weight of this carpet is 35 ton and is made in Khorasan from wool. There are 2,268,000,000 knots within the carpet and it took approximately two years to complete.

2007 Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque taken from the Wahat Al Karama - Oasis of Dignity.

We visited the mosque earlier that day. You can visit as non Muslim. This is the biggest mosque in the UAE. There is a huge parking and at the parking you have to take an escalator down which takes you into a mall. From the mall you have these moving walkways which takes you to the mosque. From the parking to the mosque is about half a kilometer; all underground! Back above ground you'll have some time to see the mosque's exterior and at the end the interior. It is very pretty. They have rules: knees and shoulders should be covered by clothing and woman have to cover there hair. For small kids it is less strict.

This is shot from the Oasis of Dignity which is on the other side of the highway. There is a war memorial to commemorate those who were killed fighting for the country. Next to it is this round 'lake' which contains a thin layer of water which returns a nice reflection of the mosque.

Whilst stopping over in Dubai we hired a desert safari driver the following day to take us down to Abu Dhabi and visit some of the highlights. First stop was Sheikh Zayed Mosque which is unlike anything I've ever seen before! Absolutely amazing!

They have free guided tours every day at 10am except Fridays and I highly recommend a visit!

A little info on the Mosque:

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الشيخ زايد) in Abu Dhabi is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the eighth largest mosque in the world. It is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and the first President of the United Arab Emirates, who is also buried next to the mosque(outer left side). The mosque was opened for worship since Eid Al Adha December 2007.

It also houses the world's largest carpet which is made by Iran's Carpet Company and designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi.

This mosque also held the largest chandelier. There are seven imported chandeliers from Germany made from gold-plated copper and fitted with millions of Swarovski crystals. The largest chandelier has a 10 m (33 ft) diameter and a 15 m (49 ft) height. The chandelier was relegated to second place when the current record holder was unveiled in Doha.

Really wanted to shot this with a centered perspective but there was no room for my tripod on the bridge center.

Check out all of my images from Dubai on my portfolio.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the sixth largest mosque in the world. It is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and the first President of the United Arab Emirates, who is also buried there. The mosque was officially opened in the Islamic month of Ramadan in 2007.

The design of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque has been inspired by Mughal and Moorish mosque architecture, the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore and the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca being direct influences. The dome layout and floorplan of the mosque was inspired by the Badshahi Mosque and the architecture was inspired by both Mughal and Moorish design, particularly the Badshahi Mosque and the Hassan II Mosque. Its archways are quintessentially Moorish and its minarets classically Arab. The design of the mosque can be best described as a fusion of Arab, Mughal and Moorish architecture.

The Mosque is large enough to accommodate 40,000 worshippers. The main prayer hall can accommodate up to 9,000 worshippers. Two rooms next to the main prayer hall, with a 1,500-capacity each, are for the exclusive use of women.

There are four minarets on the four corners of the mosque which rise about 115 m (380 ft) in height. There are 57 domes covering the outside yard and the main building as well. The domes are decorated with white marble and the interior decoration is made of marble. The courtyard is paved with floral marble designs and measures about 17,000 m2 (180,000 sq ft).

'ZAYED UNIVERSITY'

I always wanted to photograph this university, ever since I saw it from the air, back in October 2011.

It was a long wait before I finally came face to face with all these organic curves which are part roof, part structural facade. Zayed University is glorious and it certainly didn't disappoint! There wasn't a soul in this quiet place so my experience of this marvel was very personal and borderline spiritual.

Cold steel and hot windows, long sweeping lines and organic curves give this building a very feminine, elegant and somewhat feline presence.

I'm happy to share the ultra-futuristic and very unique architecture of the Zayed University with all of you.

I shot several time-lapse sequences here as well so my visit felt complete and perfect!

Tech talk: this is a dynamic blend of 5 exposures from -2EV through +2EV.

I used Canon 5D Mark III and Canon TS-E 17mm f4.0L lens. Promote Remote Control helped with bracketing which exceeded 30 seconds on the longer end.

Colour grade reflects my experience of this architecture. I went for a desaturated look with cold metallic hues, deep blacks and icy whites. It is a heightened reality which feels 'right' in my gut.

Processed with LR 4.4, PS CC, Viveza 2, Topaz ReStyle and custom RGB curves.

I've uploaded several version of this mosque....but it's such a great piece of architecture that I had to shoot it from many different perspectives :)

One of the most magnificent structures I have ever seen...the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi is lit up at night, but the color will vary depending something to do with the moon (If anyone knows, please tell). This was taken at night (obviously), with a very long exposure.

A bit more from Wikipedia:

Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the sixth largest mosque in the world. Although it is illegal for non-Muslims to enter mosques in the United Arab Emirates, this mosque will be an exception. The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority announced that tours of the mosques will be given to both Muslims and non-Muslims beginning in mid-March 2008 in order to promote cultural and religious understanding.
