Yokai (ๅฆ–ๆ€ช) are a class of supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons in Japanese folklore. The term encompasses a wide range of beings, from mischievous spirits and animal-human hybrids to vengeful ghosts and fearsome demons.

In Japanese, "Sลhei" (ๅƒงๅ…ต) translates to "warrior monks" or "monk soldiers". They were a class of Buddhist warrior monks who existed in Japan from the 10th to the 17th centuries.

(Ink on paper, 2008)

This is one of two pieces I will be showing in the "Yokai In Your Eye" show @ Bear & Bird Gallery on June 14th.

This piece is based on the Sagari character. Here is the explanation:

Another spirit born from a precise turn of events, and a strange one even by Yokai standards. A Sagari is the ghost of a horse that has died beneath a tree, and is now bound to it. Appearing as a disembodied horse's head, it dangles from branches by either its ambulatory mane or a single humanoid arm, depending on the story. Kind-hearted humans have the power to release these spirits, but not all Sagari are interested in passing on, preferring the comfort of their tree to whatever awaits horses in the afterlife. Though eerie, they are not known to attack people.

My entrance for the Summer Joust 2018 (vignette category).

The yokai, monsters in Japanese folklore, are parading through the streets of medieval Japan. A perfect distraction for roof climbing ninjas.

This parade, known as Hyakki Yagyล, consists of 100 different yokai and took place in Japanese streets at summer nights. It is said that anyone who came across the parade would perish or be spirited away...

Since I don't wish that upon my minifigs, I tell a different story in which the yokai are harmless and welcomed with open arms :)

Day 1

Theme: Kitsune

Kitsune (็‹, ใ‚ญใƒ„ใƒ) is the Japanese word for the fox. Foxes are a common subject of Japanese folklore; in English, kitsune refers to them in this context. Stories depict them as intelligent beings and as possessing paranormal abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. According to Yลkai folklore, all foxes have the ability to shapeshift into human form. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick othersโ€”as foxes in folklore often doโ€”other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives.

Ushioni are devils with bull heads which in Uwajima, Shikoku are seen as protective spirits and a festival is held for them in mid-July.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6NZdgoZumo

These woodland spirits are the creation of Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki rather than genuine Shinto yลkai, but since the release of 'Tonari no Totoro' ('My Neighbor Totoro') by Studio Ghibli in 1988, they've certainly entered the pantheon of Japanese childhood. The Studio Ghibli logo depicts a Chibi Totoro sitting on the head of a Totoro-O.

From left to right these are a large Totoro-O ("king of the forest", though that's a king, not the king), a medium-sized Chu Totoro and a tiny Chibi Totoro. They stands on top of the main gate to the museum grounds from Inokashira Park and the road from Mitaka railway station.

Designed personally by Miyazaki-sensei, the 'Forest of Mitaka Ghibli Art Museum' opened in 2001 to celebrate not only the iconic style and creations of Studio Ghibli itself but more widely the art, techniques, technology and sheer childlike joy of animation.

The building features the same European-influenced architecture as appears in the films, with idiosyncratic spiral starcases, internal bridges between balconies and a roof garden. As the museum's website explains, the interior is "a portal to a storybook world" to be experienced "with your own eyes and senses, instead of through a camera's viewfinder". It's a fair restriction: the memories I made couldn't be captured within photos.

Kitsune are a type of yลkai, or spiritual entity, and the word is often translated as fox spirit. One of the two common classifications of kitsune, the zenko (literally good foxes), are benevolent, celestial foxes, said to be Inariโ€™s messengers. They are believed to possess superior intelligence, long life, and magical powers. Kitsune usually come in pairs, with ceremonial red bibs. They have a key in their mouth, to the rice granary, but a jewel, a sheaf of rice, a scroll or a fox cub are also common. Restaurants on mount Inari sell Kitsune Udon ("Fox Udon"), a noodle soup topped with pieces of abura-age (fried tofu), a treat supposedly favored by foxes (which are carnivores?).

Inktober - Spirit.

Meet yลkai Gashadokuro.

They are giant skeletons, created from the spirits of the people who died in battlefield and not buried. Other story says that Gashadokuro died of hunger and is angry because of that. Whatever the cause, Gashadokuro is angry and wants to bite heads off.

A truly evil variation of the Baku Yokai, one who eats all dreams and desires of it's victims leaving them hallow with no purpose in life.

Stories are like human forms -- they are born, they live, they vanish, and they are reborn once again. Once told no one knows where they may go. So too humankind. Perhaps we will meet in The Pure Land, and perhaps we will not. What comes, goes. What goes, comes back.

THE OLD MAN, THE GRAVEYARD, AND THE BUTTERFLY

Once upon a time there stood a small house outside a little cemetery where an old man named Takahama lived. Because of his friendly nature all his neighbors loved him. It would have been expected that he would have marry and had posterity, but Takahama lived alone in that house from the time he was a young man. For twenty years now for he refused to have any relationships with a woman.

As happens after many years, one summer Takahama-san grew deathly ill. He realized that the yamamichi (mountain path) -- his life -- was almost at its end. He sent for his sister -- a widow and her son, who was a young man of twenty. As they tended to Takahama-san he fell asleep. A large blue butterfly flew in and settled on the dying man's pillow. Takahamaโ€™s nephew drove it away with a paper fan, but again and again it returned to the same spot on the pillow. Again and again Takahamaโ€™s nephew drove the butterfly away. Again and again the blue butterfly returned. Growing angry the young man drove the butterfly through the garden until it flittered through the open gates of the cemetery near the temple and besides Takahama's small home. It rested on a stone and then vanished.

Takahama-san's nephew, searching for the butterfly, gazed on the tombstone where he had lost sight of the butterfly. The stone bore the name, carved into the stone, โ€œAkiko.โ€ Below was inscribed characters that revealed this person was 18 years old when she had died -- twenty years earlier. He noted that, though she had died long ago her gravestone was well maintained. In front there were flowers and a recently-filled vessel containing water.

The young man returned to Takahamaโ€™s home and inquired about his uncle, but his mother just cried. While in the cemetery his uncle had died. "As he returned to dust, son, a smile crossed his face. It was unfortunate you were absent." Her son told her that he would honor his uncle, and mentioned that in the cemetery he had found a well-tended grave. "We can see he is honored in death, mother, much as this person -- Akiko -- has been

She took at her son. "Akiko?" she cried. "It must be that same Akiko!"

โ€œBut who is Akiko?โ€ he asked her.

โ€œWhen your uncle was young he was betrothed to a charming girl named Akiko, the daughter of one of our neighbors. But she died a very painful death shortly before they were to be married. After she was buried your uncle swore never to marry -- or even look at another women. It was then that he built this small house close to the cemetery so he could always be near her grave. All this happened some twenty years ago -- and every day for all these years your uncle visited the cemetery and prayed at her grave.

"I think that Akiko finally came for him, her soul in the form of a big blue butterfly.

Yokai in Japanese mythology are spirits, sometimes malevolent and sometimes not. Some, known as obake, are shapeshifters. If you wait long enough in the dark you may be unfortunate to meet a malevolent yokai. If so, poor you.

MUSIC: To put you in the mood for your fate, here's some appropriate music.

One of the most terrifying of all Yokai, the Gashadokuro is created from the bones of countless people who starved to death. It hungers for blood and carnage, and is nearly unstoppable. They can even go invisible, despite being the size of a skyscraper.

BTW, you should read The Girl With The Ghost Eyes, in cwhich a Gashadokuro is called by its Chinese name, Kuo-Yuanling. Good book.
