As the sun pops out for the first time today, CSX 4685, the "Spirit of Mulberry" and also in YN2 paint, leads train Q593 west through Tuscola.
My photostream has had a pretty western-centric focus as of late, time to mix it up. On my flight home from PHX, I stopped by Georgetown Junction to grab Q38911 heading west in great afternoon light with a YN2 AC6000 on the point. For a shot just steps from my apartment, this is one that I don't take advantage of often enough.
Two very clean YN2 units lead Q264 through the interlocking at CP7 in Bogota, NJ. At this point the River Sub had yet to be double-tracked between CP7 and CP5, but signs of the work to do so are clearly visible.
CSX Q264:
CSXT 8771 SD60M (ex-CR 5536)
CSXT 7732 CW40-8
CSX 4419, one of very few remaining YN2 EMDs, leads local L422 (formerly J780) into Sparksville, IN. The active B&O codeline and CPL signals make a perfect frame for the train here, even with it running earlier than we had anticipated.
While far from West Virginia, with the less-than-commonly used road to get to this spot, and with an added old Ford driving along it, suddenly I have an urge to start humming John Denver.
CSX Q51408 pulls into the yard in Manchester where they will set off and pick up cars. In addition to picking up and setting off cars, the lead YN2 Dash 8 would also be set to trail due to horn issues.
A YN2 CW44AC leads cement loads east past the B&O intermediates at Williams Lake as they continue to Cincinnati.
After regaining their air, the three YN3 EMD's are back on the move heading nose first into the early morning sunshine. The leader is an old friend, and one of only eight still operating (as of the time shot) to boot. Third out is an RF&P non-dyno soldier, still getting the call and delivering the goods. CSX must have assigned these previously rare Geeps to the Cincy area, because in the span of three or four hours I spotted three of them.
Just as quick as YN2 EMD's became rare, a solid set of three non-boxcar EMD's is something to note. I sure miss the vast amounts of C40-8's and SD50's, and this felt somewhat like a send-off to that era.
Spring in the Blue Ridge is in full swing as CSXT 482 North splits the Clinchfield intermediates at Big John’s as today’s W360-18 makes a run for Kona with 5 loaded K&J’s and 8 empties.
This is the first rebuild work train I’ve been able to shoot, and It was good for the heart to see some life on the south end today. Big thanks to everyone who helped, this was a group effort!
CSX M574 pops out of the ice-covered portal at South Tunnel with a classic, but snow-covered YN2 CW44 leading.
CP 286 navigates the S-curve at Florida Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a YN2 AC4400 leading the way.
Two old YN2 CSX engines lead a short Q158 west on the CSX Trenton Sub. Traffic was awful, and this was the location that worked.
CSX AC44CW 510 brings up the rear of Q425 as the distributed power unit, as the train climbs westbound over Washington Hill. This bright future or hockey stick paint scheme, more commonly referred to as YN2, has always been my favorite on CSX locomotives. With many units having been retired, stored, or eventually getting rebuilt with new paint, I’m always happy to photograph one even if it’s trailing.
CSX 7810 takes the corner at CP Dolton with Q244 for Gibson. These Dash 8's are getting rare fast, especially these YN2 ones.
An East bound CSX Coal train on the James River Viaduct at Richmond, VA headed to Newport News from where it would be shipped for export.
Early morning eastbound train Q626 rolls through Voorheesville with a YN2 C40-8W, CEFX SD40M-2 3136, and CSX SD40-2 8361. The Dash 8 7703 was retired by CSX and sold to GE.
One couldn’t ask for a more beautiful day in Western North Carolina as CSXT 148 South leads rebuild ballast train W362-27 across Clinchfield’s 811’ long Catawba River Viaduct, high over Lake James.

CSX I198 heads south toward LaGrange, GA on A&WP Subdivision with a pair of YN2 CW44ACs (392 and 461).
For some reason, the train was moving very slowly through this area and just north of here. After reaching this location, which was the distant to the junction with the Lineville Subdivision, they began picking up speed a bit. I'm unsure what the issue was but it could've been a slow order or locomotive troubles. The B803 behind them had been running on approaches since catching up to I198 at Hogansville.
A gaggle of photographers point their cameras at M510 and its YN2 leader as they head north through the interlocking at South Deshler.
CSXT 4782 leads doubled up loaded coal train CSX C118 eastbound through Moss Run, Virginia, along the CSX Alleghany Subdivision.
A CSX YN2 paint duo leads NS 6D4 east on the Pocahontas district (aka the Pokey) through Northfork, Wv on a cool February afternoon.
Matching YN2s blast off from Fulton in sweet evening light headed over the mountain to Clifton Forge
Surrounded by rock outcroppings that cover this part of Dickenson County, a matched pair of YN2 CW44’s emerge from the north portal of Clinchfield’s 1,040 foot long Hills Mills Tunnel with northbound time freight X692-06.
A pair of classic Dash 8's lead a timetabled westbound CSX autorack under the former C&O signal bridge at Risingsun, OH. Back when the Pemberville Sub's signals were on it last years of operation, it didn't matter if it was high sun or not, a shot of C&O infrastructure was worth while.
Nowadays...who even goes to the Pemberville Sub anymore?
On a sunny morning, CSXT Q384-17 picks up speed as it rolls under the C&O Signal bridge near Perrysburg, OH with a matched set of YN2 GE's. Get your shots soon because these signals will be gone soon. One of my favorite locations on the line, Risingsun, now has a replacement bridge on the ground, but without heads on it.
Headed down to Deshler on Thursday October 16, 2025 for L318. After hearing about a light power move north on the radio I figured I would stay around. Next thing I knew these two engines went north to custar. Little less than two hours later, G247 with a loaded grain train, heads south from Custar Ohio into Deshler. Where they would run around their train and head east to Buffalo.
Figured to shoot here since you don’t get many south bounds over the diamond in daylight.
Splitting the US&S R2’s at Unicoi, CSXT 121 South grinds up the 0.5% grade of Clinchfield’s “High Line” toward the summit with loaded grain train G765-22.

D795-27 stopped in the rock cut just east of Iron Springs Rd on the Hanover Sub. Both units retain their as-delivered paint scheme considered by many to be the best company scheme ever worn by a CSX locomotive. August 27, 2019
A lashup of pure YN2 awesomeness splits the SCL signals at Whitehouse, in Jacksonville, Fl. Notcheight (on flickr) deserves credit for this catch.. ;-P
Led by a pair of CW44’s, T091-16 emerges from the Virginia portal of the 6247’ Hagans Tunnel with 90 loads from JRL Coal’s “Creech” tipple. With the help of CV Pusher C201-16 on the rear, they’ll make quick work negotiating the last mainline switchback in the country before continuing on south toward the Eastman Chemical Plant in Kingsport, Tn.

As the last bit of evening sun drops below the horizon, CSX W094 ducks under the cantilevers at Dawkins with a pair of YN2 CW44s in charge.
After a brief stoppage L422 gets moving west to Mitchell with Csx 4419 which is one of the last EMD units to have a YN2 scheme.
L422-26 (North Vernon, IN - Mitchell, IN)
CSXT 4419 GP40-2

Creating long shadows, NR116, NR57 and NR39 lead 1YN2, a Pacific National Infrabuild steel train from Whyalla to Morandoo (Newcastle).

With a classic CSX YN2 unit leading, CP 381 crosses over the Kinnickinnic river and ducks under the Milwaukee Road searchlight cantilever at KK Bridge. On the right is CP 680, which also had a pair of CSX units for power. I wasn't planning to spend this afternoon in Milwaukee, but my scanner tragically died while railfanning Byron Hill and the nearest store I could find that sold new ones was an hour away in Milwaukee. Hearing "CSX 9000" approaching right after I turned on the new scanner definitely made the diversion worthwhile!
