L&N Searchlights stand guard as a pair of YN2 CW44’s lead Hazard Mine Run C840-24 into daylight out of Hazard Tunnel. They'll run down the main through Hazard Yard, south toward the siding at Edjouet to tie down for the morning. The track in the foreground is the L&N Lotts Creek Branch.
I've been in Ohio for almost 6 years, but soon the Air Force will be sending me to the Arctic. In between moving my stuff and taking care of paperwork, I've been squeezing in some railfanning here and there. May 1 was my last full day of railfanning here in Ohio, and CSX, once again, delivered with one hell of a consist.
Sprinting east towards Crestline on the Mount Victory Subdivision, CP 7023, CP 9832, and CSX 8482 (YN2) lead Q560-01 through the namesake town on a gorgeous Saturday morning. Obviously, railroads don't make up consists to please railfans. But still, sometimes I'd like to think so, and I couldn't ask for a better consist to photograph one last time.
The sound of two GE 7FDL16’s running wide open echos through the Alleghanies as YN2 CW44AC’s 211 and 31 slug it out through Hilldale, Wv with a loaded C210-05 from Danville.
R277 crosses the North Fork of the Kentucky River as it nears the end of the Leatherwood Branch at Dent Yard before rejoining the Rockhouse main.
Loaded autorack train Q234 breaks the quiet of a cold winter night in Churchville, New York as it rounds the bend at Savage Road and heads east towards CP 382 where it will diverge on to the West Shore. In the lead is CSX SD70MAC 4566, which was one of only a handful of SD70MAC's still wearing the YN2 paint scheme at the time.

A rare YN2 SD60M leads Q635 around the southeast transfer and under the three-track C&O cantilever signal guarding W.E. B&O Center Siding. They'll pull down to the east end, cut away their head 26 cars and set them out before continuing towards Columbus.
CSX L10016 begins its day as it shuffles around the modest yard in Rockwood on the S&C Subdivision. On the south end of the consist is one of the last remaining YN2 Geeps on the CSX roster.
On of the few YN2 GP38-2 left on the CSX roster at the time, CSXT 2756, and a slug set blast out of Cantonment toward Goulding Yard on the Mobile, AL - Pensacola, FL road freight M706. This was one of my countless attempts to try and photograph W.R. Taylor Brick in Pensacola getting serviced and of course making the detour to nab this train caused me to miss it at the time. Thankfully W.R. Taylor still receives service today and I've managed to catch them working it since, so I can contend myself now with having gotten this fantastic set of power instead which will likely not happen again. I'm unsure if 2756 still wears YN2 today, but all the power around Pensacola has turned to beautiful Gevos in the meantime... Cantonment, FL
Located in the Break Interstate Park the former CRR crosses the Russell Fork River at Towers in a scene that is nothing short of spectacular.
CSX #4419 leads the eastbound L422 local splitting the signals at Fort Ritner, IN on it's twice weekly eastbound run to North Vernon.
In the wee hours of a cold Martin Luther King Jr. Day, eastbound Q328-20 rolls under the C&O signal bridge in Howell, Michigan with a YN2 GE AC44CW No.32 on the point.
Here's a scan of an old print from long ago. I don't have access to my old hand written notebooks so I don't know when this was taken but I certainly know where. This is a Conrail local out of Middleboro working the small former New Haven (originally Old Colony) yard near Battleship Cove in Fall River. They are kicking up a little dust after spotting up a pair of mechanical reefers at the State Pier and crossing Water Street.
I don't know what year this was taken but it was before the Conrail split in June 1999. My guess is spring of 99 because the influence of soon to be owner CSXT is apparent. New England was long a bastion for GE products with Conrail assigning B23-7s almost exclusively to their myriad local assignments. But then seemingly overnight they just vanished and we awoke to a world of just geeps....one we still inhabit to this day. It is also clear that the unit behind this 1979 built GP38-2 is a CSXT unit dressed in YN2 paint as given away by the yellow handrails and different shade of blue. Beyond that I know little else about this shot other than that I like it.

Not many things get you excited on CSX these days, but when you get word that a 4 pack of YN2 AC44s are leading a hopper out of Newport News you leave work slightly early not feeling well. After meeting two eastbounds on the peninsula U118 is re-crewed in Fulton for the run over the mountain to Clifton Forge.
After chasing L305 east and watching them run by light power going back west, we heard they were meeting L303 at Fowlerville. With light conditions poor, the lights came out, all 10 of them, for a blue hour shot at the signal bridge. After a short wait, L303 came screaming through with a YN2 AC4400 with a whopping 5 cars, or 2 lights per car for anyone too lazy to do the math.
Chasing northbound empties on the CRR crossing the bridge in Marion,NC.. A keen eye will see Grady's drone as we were sharing the airspace.
Something I never expected to see again; A recently reactivated YN2 CW40-8 and CW40-9 lug 100 cars of Hagerstown local freight through Smithsburg, MD on the former Western Maryland.
After a long night of waiting for what was initially supposed to be a rebuilt MAC, the old YN2 AC4400 that jumped in after the MAC had mechanical issues was not a bad consolation prize. The long delay that was incurred in Grand Rapids pushed this train late enough to get it after sunrise under the massive bridge at the west end of Howell siding.
Eastbound I13814 departs the terminal at North Baltimore behind a Dash 8 still wearing YN2. Not a whole lot of these left on CSX these days, so getting one leading an intermodal was a nice surprise.
CSX M541 makes their final sprint toward their destination of Waycross, GA as they pass by Ternest Road in Jamestown, GA with a pair of YN2 AC44s.
M510 blasts north approaching SE Ottawa, with a YN2 Dash 9 in the lead and some Bronco frames on the headpin.

A photo inspired by my good friend Daniel, L245212 crawls over the ex-Seaboard Air Line bridge at Rockets, about 1000 feet south of the famous Triple Crossing. L245 will always be my favorite train in the area, and since this was taken the power set has been split up and replaced by another solo Yn2. God's strongest local
Making a mad dash for Lima with a crew short on time, Q241 kicks up snow as it rolls by the CPL's at North Leipsic. With the snow comes the usual issues on the railroad, and up ahead switch problems at XN will delay the crew long enough to force them to recrew at Columbus Grove. The lead engine is one of just a handful of SD70MAC's remaining in the quickly disappearing (on EMDs, at least) YN2 scheme.
While maybe a little later than what I wanted, a late afternoon D705 with clear skies is always a great way to spend a Sunday. Coming into East Lansing with a YN2 AC44 leader, the train rolls through the east end of Trowbridge. They will stop and make a significant set out at Ensel before continuing on after dark to Grand Rapids.
CSX 4419, one of the few remaining YN2 EMDs active on the roster, leads local L377 back towards Garrett after working the CKIN interchange in Wellsboro.
A matched pair of YN2 CW40-8’s thunder northbound up the loops with Q697-05 as they split the Clinchfield US&S P-5 intermediates at Big John’s in Ashford, North Carolina with tonnage for TN Eastman.

CSXT 9025, a Dash-9 in well-preserved YN2 paint, leads loaded ethanol train B739 through the array of searchlight signals at North Cabin outside of Winchester, KY on a golden August morning. Hard to believe that these engines in this scheme are now one of the most sought after things on CSX nowadays, but time will do that to you...
With a classy YN2 leader, M653 is still on the beginning miles of its journey down the C&O as it heads south through the interlocking at RB Cabin in Louisa, Kentucky.
Power for CSX L614 rests at Apex shortly before being started up to begin the day's switching. From its base in Apex the L614 will work west toward Moncure this evening. The 4419 is one of just a handful of EMD engines remaining in YN2 livery.
A pair of YN2 AC4400s with CSXT 406 in front leads CSX L303 past the searchlight signals in Williamston on the Plymouth Subdivision.
CSX X65212 departs the yard at Shelby after making a quick double. Leading the way is an AC4400 still wearing YN2.
On a beautiful February afternoon, NS 6D4 thunders over the small community of Coopers in Branwell, Wv with a pair of YN2 paint CSX units leading the way.
CSX SD40-2 #8804 leads Herzog train W084 south through Crandall, GA on a mostly cloudy afternoon in September 2016.
Forgive my bare-bones description for this one, but a week of job training in Knoxville back in April 2021 allowed me the chance to spend a day on CSX's KD Sub. My first train of the outing was this southbound mixed freight at NE Kilsyth. Dumb luck prevailed as a YN2 GE happened to be the leader.
Yesterday there had been a YN2 D9 leading Z127, so today I thought I might go out and see it in some snow. The snow was great up in Holly, but to my disappointment, I was told that it had the CSX 835 leading. Although it is junk power, I still liked the shot enough to post it. Here we see LSRC's Z127 splitting the C&O Searchlights at Munger with a fresh blanket of snow covering the trees and the ground.
..which would eventually collapse over my head and drench me.. Anyhow, a pair of YN2 Dash 8s bring Q037 consisting of only five containers across the Jax drawbridge as a storm builds overhead. The wet bridge and dark clouds made for a real nice shot. Special thanks to a manager at Times Union allowing me to get this shot from their lot!
A loaded scrubber train for Eastman in Kingsport, TN makes it's way through Natural Tunnel with a pair of YN2's on the head.
Still less than a month into service, L452 rolls east through Holton with cement loads from Mitchell. After upgrades and expansions of the cement facility, a unit train was created to handle the traffic, bringing regular six axles back to Mitchell for the 1st time in nearly 15 years.
An East bound CSX Coal train with a trio sporting the erstwhile YN2 livery, on the James River Viaduct at Richmond, VA.
A West bound CSX Coal empties led by an EMD SD70 MAC still sporting the earlier YN2 livery, clears Louisa, VA.
A trio of YN2 AC44’s lead K429-03 across Boones Creek just North of Johnson City in the early morning.
Westbound hotshot van train Q00925 ducks under the intermediate signal at QD103 with a classic YN2 Dash 8 standard cab on the point. With the dark sky, and some last second sunshine, the fall color was really popping, which made for a nice last shot of the 2015 fall season. In the next couple of days the winds and rains put an end to the fall color.
