CSX Y121 (former ST SAPPI-3) is seen westbound over Martin Stream in Fairfield with a pair of EMDs consisting of the last YN2 GP38-2 on the CSXT roster and a MEC GP40-2LW.
CSX M216 crawls up Main Street in La Grange at dusk with consecutively numbered YN2 C40-9Ws, 9005 and 9006, doing the honors. These two motors likely haven’t been coupled together since they left the factory floor in Erie in 1994.
I was scrolling through Flickr recently and saw a post that there are only two GP40-2s left in YN2 'Bright Future' paint on the entire CSXT system. I have no idea if there are GP38-2s or slugs left at this point and sadly I never shot more than a handful of them.
So that got me thinking and I stumbled across this shot from more than a dozen years ago.
Here is a view looking railroad south down off Joe Johnson drive at the small CSXT Yard at about MP 275.7 on CSXT's KD Subdivision (the ex Louisville and Nashville Railroad mainline to Atlanta) in downtown Knoxville surrounded by the giant UT campus as a slug set does a bit of switching.
GP38-2 2502 (blt. Mar. 1973 as SCL 502) still wearing an old Yb scheme is mated to road slug 2349 (blt. Jun. 1971 as a GP38AC for the Louisville and Nashville as their number 4046). Last I checked she is still around but now wears modern YN3b paint.
If you're interested in the weird variations of CSXT paint this older link I found provides a nice summary: www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/schemes_csx.htm

After an afternoon run west across "The Texas", G438 closes in on its destination of Evansville as they cross the massive bridge over the Ohio River at Rahm. As the crow flies, this location is about 2 rail miles past the connection with the Texas, but getting there by road requires an almost 25 mile detour up and around Evansville due to the road structure. Rahm has been a bucket list location for me for a long time, and I'm thrilled to finally have a shot here. Hard to beat a YN2 at golden hour!
It’s a beautiful morning in Lee County, Va as T090-09’s pair of CSX CW44’s work through Hubbard Springs with 90 loads of coal for Eastman.

CSX YN2 GE pair 459 and 113 on Willard-Columbus job L339 pass a cemetery along US23 north of Carey, Ohio, on April 23, 2022. Turns out there's some nice scenery along the C&O when you're not focused on those pesky old signals that they turned into razor blades.
An East bound CSX Train passing through Harpers Ferry, WV. The cyclist (wearing helmet) is a local guy, who is also a railfan.
YN2 CW44AC 395 blows smoke into the night air as it awaits a northward march. M574 was tied down at Memphis Junction due to flooding on the northern end of the Mainline Sub.
I decided to focus on some classic Boston and Maine era searchlights I'd not shot before. These are becoming a rare bread and if the CSXT acquisition is approved and they move forward with PTC installation these will assuredly all go to the scrap heap.
Here is Pan Am train POAY (the daily Rigby to Ayer manifest) setting out a half dozen cars for the NHN into the south end of the yard here at CPF 243. This massive truss bridge carrying the mainline over Broadway was clearly once double tracked but now this is the south end of 2.2 mile stretch of double main. MEC 7609 (GE C40-8 blt. Jul. 1990) still wears its patched over CSXT YN2 paint despite having been on Pan Am property for more that five years.

As the sun gleams on a surprisingly clean SD40-2 in YN2 paint, a series of dark T-storms blow past N124's lashup heading Northeast, sparing the southern part of Newberry from any rain at all.
W056 rolling north through Memphis Junction at sunset with a trio of YN2's leading the charge, only one of which online.
Ducking into Clinchfield’s 412’ long Caney Fork Tunnel, Dante Mine Run F892-17 prepares to start their days work on the McClure Spur. Typical work of the old Nora Turn of the early 1990’s, the veteran Dante crew of M. Addington and D. Yates will pull 100 loads of “north coal” from the McClure No. 1 Mine & Preparation Plant and take them to Shelby.
At the time of this photograph, the Clinchfield main between St. Paul and McClure was effectively mothballed; only being used for storage hopper moves, or crews returning home without a taxi. This resulted in very few moves to and from Dante during this time. The turn jobs that worked McClure were still based out of the “new” 1997 built yard office at Dante, but not for much longer.
Fast forward to today, all area mine runs are based out of Shelbiana, Ky. Contura’s McClure No. 1 Mine & Processing Plant still pumps out 100 loads of Metallurgial “north coal” almost daily for Newport News.

Richmond's famous triple crossing. The viaduct is former C&O on top, which the Seaboard Air Line's S-line just below, and at ground level is the former Southern. Coal loads heading east to New Port News
One of the few remaining RF&P signals and a YN2 Big six both on borrowed time made today's Q410 just a little sweeter.
One of CSX's 30 SD60Ms, #8766, YN2 C40-8 #7624, CSXT 1142, one of 10 CSX MP15DCs, HLCX SD40-2 #7195, and ES44AH #3018, lead a manifest into Waycross, Ga.
Grinding out of Hickory Creek Tunnel # 2, CSXT 450 South makes it’s assault on Duff Mountain with loaded company grain train G161-15. Today in the form of CSXT 446, the Morley pusher was added on the rear in Corbin and is definitely needed here as the grade reaches up to 1.31%.
After waking up this morning and looking for Q582-14, I found him stopped at Tunnel Hill waiting on track work ahead of him to clear. Todays leader was one of the rare YN2 dash 8 motors just released from long term storage. 7678 still sporting its YN2 colors and looking a little battle scarred lead the 11,000 foot long train up the W&A in the early morning hours. Once they got to TH, it was a sit for 6 and a half hours and play hookie. Anyways, it was great to see this old beast still running its keep well into 2021. Details in the photos.
Also of note, is the train was doing between 1 and 4 MPH all the way between Tunnel Hill and Graysville. I left the train there so im not sure if they kept that speed all the way to Chattanooga, but I assume they did.
After building their train of 75 empties, YN2 CW44AH # 511 brings Piney Creek Shifter H827-12 out onto main two and underneath the dual C&O Cantilevers at Quinnimont. They’ll be making the steep and winding trip to Beckley Pocahontas’s mine at Eccles, Wv under the cover of darkness, due to a major rock slide in Raleigh Yard earlier in the week.

On the afternoon of Friday, September 2nd, 2022, M70101 rolls by a high rise under construction along the Oak Point Link with CSXT466 in the lead. Typically, the M701 and M704 (now M702) runs at night but delays from the previous night had the train sitting up north until the morning of september 2nd. Even with a crew, it took hours for the train to reach Oak Point due to Metro North track work along the Hudson Line. The Hudson Line freights may be one of the last places to consistently see YN2 AC44CWs as more and more are getting sidelined and rebuilt as time goes on.
April 29, 2012: A C40-8W GE engine sporting the YN2 paint scheme, leads CSX Freight Train Q581 (Nashville, TN-Atlanta, GA) across the Etowah River Bridge near Emerson, GA on the CSX Western & Atlantic Subdivision.
A warm summer evening sunset burns in the sky over the Mississippi Gulf Coast and CSX’s New Orleans & Montgomery Subdivision. Here CSX long distance local L800 is framed crossing the Pascagoula drawbridge as they roll north into Pascagoula, MS behind a solo YN2 C40-8W leader. The Mississippi Gulf Coast remains undefeated for a photographer to capture scenes like this along the old Louisville & Nashville route.
Southbound rack train Q243 throttles up at South Deshler behind a pair of YN2 C40-8's, the leader looking rough after 20-some years in the "bright future" scheme. The sunlight here was a lucky break, ten seconds sooner or later and the scene would have been shrouded in bland cloud cover.
With one of the few remaining YN2 painted GP38-2's in the lead, CSX local L320arrives at the yard in Clinton, Ohio after picking up interchange from the Akron Barberton Cluster Railway in Barberton. After pulling through on the main, the crew is shoving back into the yard to set out the cars and will then cut the power away.

CSXT 60 South grinds up the 1.44% grade through S.E. Elkhorn City with an at tonnage M693-15, entering the Breaks Interstate Gorge and digging in for the ruling southbound climb to Towers. The canyon walls are no stranger to the echo of a struggling southbound, this one being no exception.
CSX mine run R608, the Resource Man, rolls railroad-north through Tejay, Kentucky on the L&N Cumberland Valley Division.
Seen from along the banks of the Tennessee River, CSXT 354 south gets their 102 loads from Balkan started again after meeting M542-18. This C736-15 is headed for Middleton, SC.
CSX local L391, the daily Casky to Atkinson turn job, takes the yard lead at North Casky to put their train away. Currently, this job features a a pair of veteran C40-8W's, YN2 7905 and YN3 7777.
CSX train I141 breaks the stillness of a fall evening in LaGrange, KY as it rolls through downtown with a YN2 AC44 leading the way.
After a semi-successful day of chasing trains up and down the CC Subdivision from Cincinnati, OH to Berea, KY we decided to make our way to the Indiana Sub via La Grange after dinner, in hopes of some trains to flash. Luckily, it was a quiet night on the streets of La Grange, and we didn't get too many of the "hey what are ya taking pictures of" comments from the local citizen. We did, however, get many comments from the viewers of the Virtual Railfan camera chat as we tested our lighting setups. After a few hours of waiting, I141 came into view at a quarter to 11, and it was time to pack up and finish driving to Indiana in search of CPLs.
A pair of CSX AC4400CW's bring loaded grain train G407 into Aragon, GA nearing the Cagle Feed Mill at Rockmart. Hard to believe they had a brush cutter through here not even a year ago.
After waiting four hours for a broken rail to be repaired at Rivanna Jct engineer Al Snyder takes H751-02 west to Strathmore where they would tie the train down. Two AC44s in the as delivered YN2 scheme power todays train; matching sets are becoming harder to come across these days.
A pair of YN2 GE's lead a loaded coal train down the Big Sandy at West End Wagner on a Wintry afternoon.
Just 6 feet shy of being the highest mountain pass on CSX (second to Altamont, MD on the Mountain Subdivision at 2,629’), Clinchfield’s 1,865’ Ridge Tunnel at the top of the loops is no stranger to a struggling northbound; this time in the form of aging CW44 CSXT # 136 reaching the highest elevation on the CRR with time freight M652.
CSX local L391 curves through the control point of North Kelly with a pair of YN2 C40-8W’s leading. L391 is a daily turn from Casky Yard in Hopkinsville to Atkinson Yard in Madisonville. In the recent months, it’s consistently held a pair of Dash 8’s on what seems like their eternal deathbed.
A pair of three-month-old CSX AC6000s lead Conrail SECS south through Ridgefield Park, NJ. Three months after ths photo was taken, "Big Conrail" would disappear the River Line would become part of CSX's network. Fresh YN2 paint really stood out on a gloomy day.
