ST AYPO rolls across the Scarborough Marsh behind two of the cleaner YN2 C40-8s that were never repainted into Pan Am livery.
After a couple of month out on the Indiana Sun, 4419 has left the Indiana Sub. This day they ran back east asking for permission by Brownstown.

CSX M561 with a pair of YN2 AC44s passes the B&O CPLs at the south end of Wapakoneta siding on the CSX Toledo Subdivision.
CSX Q13819 rounds the horseshoe curve at Mance as the foliage on the surrounding hillside begins to change. With retirements and rebuild programs the remaining YN2 engines have been dropping like flies, so it was neat to see this old Dash 9 hauling priority intermodal.
NS 65E passes through Longswamp with a pair of YN2 AC4400s adding a splash of color. Once full of pleasant rural scenes, this part of Lehigh and Berks counties is feeling the death grip of Amazon warehouses and similar developments. That, and the nosedive in traffic under PSR, has kept me from coming back in recent years.
With the sun just finally below the horizon, blue hour is slowly taking over as E251 comes north through Gaines with a surprisingly clean YN2 Dash-8 leading a colorful consist.
Nearing Corbin Yard, C602-29 finds a glorious pocket of light at the south end of Arkle with fresh loads from Balkin.
A return to winter action in Central New York: on 19 February 2000 some "old friends" arrive on the CSX Chicago main in East Syracuse. Leading this westbound freight is B40-8 No. 5941 (ex NYSW 4032) in YN2 paint, along with still-NYSW B40-8 No. 4008 and a FURX SD40 unit.
Both the PC Heritage unit and the trialing CSX YN2 engine both have a well worn look to them. Regardless of appearances, they've got a long string of single and double stack intermodal on the drawbar running as NS 265 (former 23K) just west of Clay Center, OH approaching the 278 signals. Even a worn CSX YN2 painted unit looks better on a beautiful day with Fall colors all around. CSXT 100 leads M368-08 east around the corner at Greenwich, OH as mid-day closes in. 10/9/2022
C612 has just scanned its cars through the loadout and is ready to load the first cut at Balkan with a nice YN2 up top.
Catching a sliver of sunlight before plunging into Tunnel 8 in Ford, Kentucky, a YN2 AC4400 and another GE are operating as manned helpers based out of East Bernstadt. The crew is assisting loaded coal train C603 as it heads north on the CC Subdivision.

An AC4400 in a decent looking coat of YN2 paint splits the intermediate signals at Nora on the former Clinchfield route with train M652, traveling between Rocky Mount, NC and Russell, KY.
Q635 pulls out of the center siding at E.E. B&O to make their Fostoria set off with a YN2 SD60M leading. The C&O signals along the Columbus and Pemberville subdivisions are endangered, and whether they make it to 2018 is in question.
CSX A794, nicknamed The Fernandina Rocket, heads north on the Jesup Subdivision with two SD40-2s and an SD40-3. Second is CSX SD40-2 8484, one of the last EMDs in YN2. All three motors were doing full track speed, each definitely in 8.
My friends and I had previously caught 8484 on A038 dropping ties a day or two prior to this. Somehow and someway, it got thrown onto A794 for this day only. Unfortunately it wasn't leading but this was still quite the treat nonetheless.
At the time of posting this, A794 no longer exists. I've heard rumors of it returning but so far they're just rumors. If I remember correctly, it wasn't too long after this trip that the train was abolished.
After getting recrewed at the previous siding, Q583 rolls north through the countryside at Howie Siding in Comer, GA on CSX's Abbeville Subdivision.
I got up out of bed, walked out of the SCL caboose I was staying in, and already hear my first train of the day. My camera in hand, I prepare my settings for a pan shot at 1/6 of a second. Here comes a speeding Q121 with an epic pair of YN2s. In the lead is an AC60 in YN2 paint, and one of the very few SD70MACs remaining in YN2 paint.
An old-school SD70MAC brings CSX loaded coal train T200 past the west end of the passing siding at Natural Bridge.
CSX SD60M #8781 still wearing its YN2 paint, leads loaded pipe train K573-11 north out of the Etowah River valley nearing Cartersville, GA on the W&A Sub.
One of the few remaining YN2 painted standard cab units on the active roster, CSXT GP40-2 4419 is at Lagrange, Georgia, in the early hours of April 25, 2020 while assigned to A720.
CSX SD50 8542, one of three SD50's left in YN2, leads L388 uphill east out of Akron on the afternoon of 9/24/16. Thankfully they were held up long enough by track work at Sullivan to allow a little nose light where the tracks turn slightly northwest on the north side of Akron.
I018 makes its way east with a light train bound for Baltimore. The track you see branching beneath the camera in this photo is the Mon Sub, which meets the Pittsburgh Sub at McKeesport
CSX's Framingham Y101 crew is seen bringing a late B722 west on track 2 at CP-33 in Westborough, MA. Leading the way are 2 yn2 painted AC4400's that have been equipped with ACSES to run over Keolis territory.
Westbound CSX train B774 crosses over the Monongahela River in Homestead, PA with a pair of YN2 C40-8Ws for power. I had just arrived back at my apartment and decided to check facebook while warming up dinner. I saw a heads up that this train was through Connellsville at 1600, and made my way here as fast as I could.
One of only a handful of SD40's in YN2 paint, especially ex-L&N's, rolls into Baldwin yard to spend the night. This is a re-edit of a previously uploaded photo.
A nice eastern visitor in the form of Conrail's very first SD60I now sporting CSX's Bright Future scheme leads a southbound hopper train through Colorado Springs, CO.
I've previously shared a couple other shots of this train:

I wanted to get a full-on telemash to round out the chase, especially one showing the marker lights on. The ditch lights were not illuminated, so my assumption is the crew flipped the wrong switch in the cab.
Anyway, CSX's YN2 paint scheme looked really good on these widecab EMDs, at least that's my opinion...
CSX GP38-2 2756 stands on a southbound cut at Peachtree City, Georgia during the night of January 23, 2020 awaiting the arrival of Q541. Apparently it's short time working Union City locals on the Manchester Sub is done.
Two YN2 painted AC44's take charge of CN 327, as seen here in Pointe-Claire, Qc. Units sporting this scheme are slowly fading away, so it was neat to be able to photograph two together.
Led by CSXT 9015, North Baltimore bound intermodal CSX I140-28 slows its roll as it makes its way past the CPLs positioned in Deshler, Ohio. A steady snowfall continues to fall across the heart of the Buckeye state blanketing the Toledo Sub on a chilly January day.
After finally leaving Spokane for points west, I stumbled upon the Washington Eastern heading west into Medical Lake, Washington on the former Northern Pacific CW Branch which is now in its fifth reincarnation since BNSF sold the line in the spring of 1996. What was once a sizeable roster of ex-MRL SD45s five years ago is now a sizeable roster of ex-Conrail C40-8Ws. But hey, I can't complain with a YN2 leader.
I initially headed out for this day's J783, just to see if anything good was on it. Unfortunately, a pair of GE's were leading it. So i waited in Tipp City for another southbound following close behind. To my surprise, it was CSX 8830 leading Q263 south through downtown. Following it was an AC44CW in YN2, and a GEVO.
Perfectly balanced.
Delivered in Stealth paint in June of 89’, veteran C40-8 # 7518 is no stranger to hotshot CRR time freights as it leads Q696-25 south through the US&S intermediates at Unicoi in beautiful fall color.

CSX Southbound Jacksonville bound intermodal train I025-10 is fresh from a crew change accelerating out of Evansville, Indiana and up the viaduct at Rahm. Today's head end power is a pair of the railroad's AC4400s of different flavors, with an ES44AC providing mid train support.
CSXT 5005 extra south thunders under Lambert’s Tipple at Wakenva, Virginia with loaded grain train G610-20 as they climb the 1% grade up Sandy Ridge. The Shelby Pusher is shoving on the rear with a pair of CW44’s.
Fast forward to the present day and the Shelby Pusher has been abolished since 2015, the fleet of CW60’s has been gone since 2018, and the tipple at Wakenva has been torn down since 2019.
Not the best photo by any means but I’m grateful I have it now for sure! July 22, 2015.
Former B&O position light signals at Hayden, Indiana at MP77 see the passing of a westbound freight led by a YN2 C30-7 in gorgeous afternoon light.
Shelby Shifer C875-02 makes their way south through Caney Junction with 99 system empties for McClure. The impressive 14 mile Fremont Branch came off here, sadly removed a few years after this photo.

A pair of EMD SD40-2s trim the east end of tbe giant Selkirk Yard southwest of Albany that was long a hub for predecessors Conrail, Penn Central and New York Central.
CSXT 8483 was rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen from a straight SD40 originally blt. Feb. 1969 as MP 751. CSXT 8246 was blt. Jan. 1977 as BO 7604. The former wears the first true standardized mass applied scheme commonly known as YN2 or 'Bright Future' that was the official locomotive livery from 1990 to 2002. The latter wears the scheme that has now reigned for two decades and is known by fans as YN3 or 'Dark Future.'
I presume most folks here will prefer the older image, but I've never hated the current one with its Chessapeake and Ohio like simplicity.
