CSX Q35214 blasts up the west slope of Sand Patch Grade as it hugs the bank of the Casselman River near Salisbury Junction. Leading the way is an ex-Conrail SD40-2, with a mix of YN2 GEs and YN3 EMD products trailing. The highlight of the consist is the fourth engine, former C&O GP39 4294.
Well after nightfall on a warm June evening, YN2 painted CSX Dash-9 9006 is seen heading through Matthews, NC with M653-26.
CSX L100 shuffles tankers at the Pepsi transload site in Johnstown, PA. Leading the train is CSX #2756, notable for being the last GP38-2 to wear the YN2 scheme on CSX's roster.
At ADM in Tuscola, the elevator employee is probably sighing with relief as the last car of this 90 car grain train is seconds from being completely loaded. Two hours later and the DREI crew will be hopping on to take it east to Hillsdale, where a CSX crew will then take it south. This pair of YN2 AC4400CW locomotives look great and are a nice touch to this train, considering its usual set of fresh GEVOs.
In a scene straight out of the late 2000s, Q217 hustles south through Tipp City with a recently reactivated YN2 C40-8W. Completing the scene is the classic B&O CPL, the southernmost example on the Toledo Sub.
Fall color is ablaze as a southbound loaded grain train led by a YN2 AC4400 stomps over the summit of Duff Mountain Grade in Duff, Tennessee, splitting a set of Louisville & Nashville searchlights at N. E. Kilsyth.
March 24, 2017: After being parked in Emerson over 24 hours due to congestion at Georgia Power's Plant Bowen, the loaded coal drag finally makes it's way to the plant Northbound on the W&A Sub, seen here at Cartersville, GA crossing over the Etowah River with my personal favorite CSX paint scheme/power on the front; an AC6000CW in YN2 paint. Sadly, these units are no longer a part of the CSX roster.
On a gorgeous southern summer evening, CSX L245 departs Collier yard bound for Hopewell, Virginia. In the lead is GP39-2 number 4313, originally built for the Reading, it then went to the D&H, and is still earning its keep in 2022. The 2nd unit is one of the few CSX Geeps still in YN2, originally in service with the Penn Central, then to Conrail, and is also still earning money for the railroad. With a heavy train, the vintage geeps put on an unbelievable show getting their train up to speed on a picture perfect evening.
75 Loads from Clearco and a pair of YN2 CW44AC’s await the arrival of Rainelle crew H801-22 at Rainelle Jct; also known as the Sawmill.
Well, here's another result of my precision calculating and estimating when it comes to YN2 EMD's ;-)
It seems like every time I'm alerted about a YN2 EMD coming to Jacksonville, I correctly predict what train it will be on. After finding out 2756 was here, I shot for Y108 from the Ramp to Bowden, because it was in Duval yard the previous day, and there you have it!
After a long night with the initial expectations of a SD70MAC leader, a YN2 AC4400 was good enough to follow. Running late enough to be in daylight at Beck Rd., CSX D706 rolls under the cantilever as they head for Rougmere Yard in Detroit.
CSX local Y123 powered by a rare GE C40-8 loco comes out of a tree tunnel at N. Charleston on its way to Bennett Yard
G97301 crossing the Appomattox River on a warm spring morning. The third motor will be set off in Collier as it was only needed due to the pushers being eliminated at Fulton.
With a pair of YN2 leaders, T732-08 rolls across the Tennessee River with Balkan loads for Cope, SC.
CSX M565 descends the BRC connection down to Rock Island Junction behind an SD40-2 and a YN2 AC4400. The track on the bottom right is the South Chicago Industrial Lead which leads down to 100th Street Yard.
CSXT 531 and BNSF 9791 make a really interesting set for headend power for this empty BNSF coal train running northbound on the Colorado Joint Line.
CSX 521 and another YN2 GE lead Q509 south by the twin bracket CPLs at SW, where it will meet its counterpart, Q508. Don't sleep on those YN2's. They will be rare one day.
It was like stepping back in time for a moment as a matched pair of Bright Future AC4400's lead a loaded McClure turn back to Kentucky on a brilliant spring day. This was my first train on the Clinchfield, and it may be hard to top!
CSX I015 heads west past the eastward signals at Viaduct Junction. Leading this stack train from Chambersburg is a YN2 AC4400.
The sun is shining in Erie, Pennsylvania the day after a major early season snowfall that shut down most of the railroad traffic through Buffalo, New York. With trains back on the move, a pair of YN2 AC4400's lead intermodal X169 as it cruises west. This was the previous day's I169 that runs from Port Newark, NJ to Chicago, IL, now resymboled after the layover in Buffalo.

After driving past it uneventfully several times, on our third weekend trip to southern Virginia we decided to devote some time to CSX ops on the ex-C&O James River Subdivision. Facing a lull in traffic on the nearby NS H-Line, we set up high atop Buttons Bluff just in time to hear T20016 calling the signal at Salt Peter, just a couple miles west. As they rolled around the curve we were pleasantly surprised to find one of the last YN2-painted SD70MACs on the roster leading. Needless to say, I've lost the right to play the "I have bad luck" card for at least a few months.
Original C&O code line looks on as the CSXT 296 West leads double barrel empty grain train G802-12 through LaGrange, Virginia on Buckingham Branch trackage rights.
8247 leads a short L106-07 across the Bear Creek Draw. It's incredibly rare to catch this YN2 EMD outside of Bayview, let alone on an elusive train like L106.
CSX L61519 winds down the D&S Spur on its way back from Durham to Apex. CSX 4419 in YN2 livery leads the way for the southward return trip.
The 6pm steeple bell of the Mary Helen United Methodist Church echo’s through the holler as C821-24’s pair of CSX CW44AC’s “plug” flood load their second cut of TN Eastman bound black diamonds at JRL Coal’s “Creech” tipple in Mary Helen, Kentucky.
Mary Helen is easily one of my favorite places I’ve ever spent an afternoon, tons of Eastern Kentucky history still hanging on.
A rare find for 2023 is getting a Dash 8 leading, even more so when it is a CSXT in YN2 or "Bright Future" paint in Western Colorado!
CSXT #7880 leads on the Minturn Local as it heads Westbound through Palisade heading back to Grand Jct. CO.
A couple of veterans hustle T209 through Bremo Bluff, VA eastbound on the Rivanna Sub. Due to dry conditions the expectations were for a lackluster fall foliage season, but I think that forecast was overblown, even in the middle of November the trees still had good color.
Two YN2 AC44's have a short Q566 in tow cruising east past a small pond at Boughtonville, Ohio, on Halloween 2021. I had some good luck with this one... I came into Willard just as they left, and an opening in the clouds followed the train all the way from RX to GN.
A tired YN2 AC44 leads UP's MFMEW 25 (Formosa Plastics- Englewood Yard) over Sims Bayou, heading through Houston's south side on BNSF's Mykawa Sub.

After running into a road closure south of Anna, OH, I somehow managed to get to Sharp Road near Swanders, OH and grab one last shot of M561, albeit a basic wedge with heat distorted CPLs in the background.
Thankfully for me, they were coming to a stop here for some unknown reason. A few minutes after stopping, they would get moving again so that they could clear the control point.
A not long out of storage CSX dash 8 in YN2 paint leads intermodal NS 29C west through Oakvale, WV in some beautiful morning light.

Dusk in Clinchfield Country reflects in the windows of Clinchco’s old Riverside Grocery as McClure Turn C675-18 works their way south with 100 empties headed to be loaded with some of Virginia’s finest Metalurgical Coal. The train will soon be in three tunnels at once; Short Branch, Rinehart, and Perkins tunnels that equal roughly 2,026 feet in length.
November 18, 2021.
Empty autroracks head west through Sterling with two matched YN2 dash 8's leading. The CPL's have been gone for a while now.
Beginners luck... With only two scheduled freights per day and usually running at night this scrubber stone train to the power plant in Brice was a real treat.
