Mighty Writers recommends: Eleven-year-old Elijah lives in a Canadian settlement of runaway slaves near the American border. He's the first child in town to be born free, and he ought to be famous just for that. Unfortunately, all that most people see is a "fragile" boy who's scared of snakes and talks too much. But everything changes when a former slave steals money from Elijah's friend, who has been saving to buy his family out of captivity in the South. Now it's up to Elijah to track down the thief--and his dangerous journey just might make a hero out of him, if only he can find the courage to get back home.

I started by thinking about the labels I would use if I had to label myself. I am a teacher, a student, a reader, a writer, a sister, a friend, and so much more. How would I fit those ideas into my photographs (and somehow choose just five of them)? I decided to start by identifying some of my favorite places, activities, and people. That’s how I ended up with photos of my work, my family and my friends, the adventures we took and activities we did together. I captured images of myself as a teacher: writing on the board, reading from a textbook, looking at homework. I took photos of myself near the lavender where I like to photograph bees or in my room by my many bookshelves filled with manga (Japanese graphic novels). My friend held my camera and clicked the shutter after we’d gone out for tea together (too bad she was too shy to be in the photo with me). I recorded moments of my sister, Ashley, playing with our beloved dog, Bear. I took a break to play Pokemon Go with my sister and ended up taking funny photos with her using my iPhone’s camera. I took photos of my mother, who was camera shy, even though she looks lovely when she smiles. My sister helped take photos of me in my room or in other parts of my house, many of which were awful due to poor lighting or funny faces that I had made, yet we got a few good laughs out of them. I don’t feel disappointed by any of the images, even the bad ones because I can learn from them. I didn’t even choose only photos that are technically perfect because there is an element to each of these five that I liked over what was shown in the other dozens of photos. Overall, I had a great deal of fun with this assignment and learned a little more about myself in the process.

The construction of Writers building began as early as in 1690. It got its name owing to the fact that it served as the dwelling place for the junior writers of the East India Company. The conference focus was “Writing the New Century” and explored the role writing plays in shaping the personal, social, and political consciousness of our 21st century.

Featured award-winning authors included Dr. Norma Cantú, Martín Espada, Anel Flores, Veronica Golos, Debra Monroe, and Pulitzer Prize winner Vijay Seshadri.

The 3-day conference was comprised of a full schedule of workshops, readings, panel presentations and a small press book fair, with free evening events and after-parties.
