The seat of the West Bengal government. During colonial times it was filled with clerks (writers), hence the name.
John Newton the writer of Amazing Grace was the son of a sailor, he went to sea with his father, but was then "pressed" into the British Navy, he escaped and was clapped in irons, he later became a servant to a slaver in Africa and was rescued by a sea captain who had been a friend of his father. He then worked on slave ships and was a captain of slave ships - a storm threatened to overwhelm the ship and Newton prayed for God's mercy - this was the beginning of his conversion. Newton continued to work on slave ships but later became a priest and regretted and repented his involvement in the slave trade. He encouraged William Wilberforce of stay in Parliament and "serve God where he was" rather than enter the ministry

Famous writer Robert Bloch. This is the photo he gave me to be used with the interview I did with him for a newspaper. A fascinating man and probably the 4th most successful writer of horror ever. 1) Poe, 2) Lovecraft (3 King, and 4) Bloch.
When I am down in Washington State, I get together with fellow writers in a local critique group. The group meets every Thursday evening. Yesterday it was at my home. One member was absent , but around the table from left to right is Barbara Blakey, author of Bertie’s War, Joyce Scott, author of Sea Captain’s Promise and Robert Hansen, author of The Five Names and A Bully’s Doom. Because I’ve had such experience guiding and critiquing my work, I’ve recently completed my first (as yet untitled) novel.
Our final destination before heading home was the Dublin Writer's Museum. Focusing on Irish literature, the museum is based in an 18th century building and has displays on a number of authors. My particular favourite piece is an original edition of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
