The earth is old. 5 billion years old. In that time, millions of species have evolved and become extinct. Humanity is but a temporary blip in this vast canvas over time. And yet, in that short time, we have somehow managed to impact the environment in ways very few other life forms have. And these changes have left permanent scars, and has happened at a rate faster than the life in this planet can adapt. Examples abound, from increasing CO2 levels, rapid deforestation, and higher-than-average rates of species extinction. And at such a scale, these impacts are but a statistic. And when a calamity becomes a statistic, we often tend to ignore it. And change never happens.
What triggers change is usually individual events that take on viral lives of their own - the death of the last wild southern white rhino, the recent tragic killing of a pregnant elephant in India, the illegal trophy hunting of Cecil the Lion, the death of Harambe, and so many more. It was one such event that spurred me think of the pain and the grief these creatures go through from a decision not of their in making. It was, needless to say, an emotional day.
These animals paid and continue pay the price for a choice humanity made. One cannot reverse it, but I hope to help reduce the impact we have impressed on the one life-bearing planet. On this World Environment Day, both my partner and I have pledged to donate 5% of our income to charities focused on preserving the environment, and on helping the other species who cohabit this planet survive and thrive. It may be a small amount, but over time, we hope to increase it and have even more impact.
Well you join me?
Text by Soumya Menon - A Living Root Bridge, near Mawlynnong village.
In a region which receives the maximum rainfall, where the terrain is rugged, with steep cliffs and rapid flowing rivers from waterfalls originating higher up in the mountains, these bridges serve to connect otherwise inaccessible villages, deep in the mountains.
The Indian Banyan -the Ficus benghalensis- grows on giant boulders by sheer cliff faces or along river banks, sending many secondary roots from the tree trunk down to the rivers. The roots (and branches) of the Ficus benghalensis are cleverly engineered by the War Khasi people to form this bridge, unique to this region, and a marvel to behold.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year a third of global food production equivalent to 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.

World Environment Day, 5 June 2013
Arriving on the coast of Madagascar, you’re greeted by the unbelievable tones of red…the Betsiboka river mouth, and its unbelievable (but true) veins of red flowing into the sea for dozens of kilometers… I took almost the exact same picture during Proxima and people have since explained to me that the red is an example of dramatic erosion – soil that is washing away from rainfall into the river and the Sea. The beautiful colours I see from space is actually a consequence of very concerning land loss. A focus of this year's World Environment Day is on erosion and how the #GenerationRestoration can get active to limit the effects and preserve our environment. www.worldenvironmentday.global
💪 #GenerationRestoration #WorldEnvironmentDay

The best thing about Nature is that it is beautiful in itself. The only thing we need to do to preserve its beauty is not to put our ugly hands of destruction on it!

A busy National Highway (NH12) and a tree packed with migrating storks, at the periphery of Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary, West Bengal, India. The photo was taken in October 2018. More than 100,000 storks came to this sanctuary during 2018, forming one of the World’s largest concentrations of Asian open-billed stork. Oversaturation forces them to build nests over a noisy and polluted National Highway.
Despite numerous government pledges, biodiversity and habitat loss is accelerating in all regions of the world. Caring for the planet is vital for our survival!
Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for 2019 is Air pollution.
Asian open-billed stork - Anastomus oscitans (Shamukh Khol in Bengal) in the Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary (Kulik Bird Sanctuary)
A resident colonial breeder distributed in tropical Southeast Asia. During monsoon period, the Kulik river enters the sanctuary, which supports a wide variety of food for the open billed stork. The main diet of the bird is apple snail, Pila globosa or other types of snail which grows in large number in the smaller or larger water bodies surrounding Kulik. Every year large number of this bird species come in the sanctuary only for breeding purpose. According to the field report prepared by the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), more than 100,000 storks came to Kulik during 2018, forming one of the World’s largest concentrations of this group!

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day celebrations is Think.Eat.Save.
Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages you to reduce your foodprint. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year a third of global food production equivalent to 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.
While the planet is struggling to provide us with enough resources to sustain its 7 billion people, food waste is an enormous drain on natural resources and a contributor to negative environmental impacts. Given this enormous imbalance in lifestyles and the resultant devastating effects on the environment, this year’s theme – Think.Eat.Save – encourages you to become more aware of the environmental impact of the food choices you make and empowers you to make informed decisions. Tiger Tiger " worlds third most endangered animal. In 1900's, there were eight subspecies of tiger and right now we've only five sub species left :( !!!!!! Clock Ticks rhythmically and action where taken to protect them but are they really survived the Invasion of Homo sapiens???!!! [sadly that includes foolish me too .... :( ] ....
Another World Environment Day, June 5th 2010, more and more people join their hands for this cause, more and more nations take continued Oaths to save the Environment from more degradation.... Back Rhinos and Giant Panda's looking around for a living space..... (Being the first and second most endangered animals!).
We're trying our level best but its NOT proven enough to control the degradation.... India has 38 Tiger Reserves and though the number of reserves are growing on an yearly basis, the number of Tigers reducing....... yet to find the exact status, since the terrain in southern part restricts an exact count or even an approximate statistics!!! But there's hope on the other side of the tunnel, the Officers are more concerned now and their efforts are fruitful in many areas. The Politicians are, though quite NOT sure of what these are all, but there are many who really understands and act accordingly to save the Planet.
Anyway Let's hope that at least from now onwards we can try our level best to Protect and Preserve the Environment we're IN.

Is smog changing the face of Earth's water cycle?
In year 2000 satellite data showed that urban pollution was reducing the size of droplets inside clouds.
One effect was reduced precipitation from short-lived clouds in hilly regions. These clouds form when moist air rises above the hills and form raindrops. But they dissipate once they have passed over them, giving them a limited amount of time to drop their moisture.
The researchers were able to use this data as a measure of the amount of pollution in the air and then compare it to patterns of rainfall.
Hazy Days
To see how this was affecting precipitation, scientists looked at the difference between rainfall at a hill station. This latest research joins a growing number of studies showing the effect of pollution on the planet's water cycle.
Another study, shows that there are more intense storm systems over the Pacific ocean. By delaying the onset of rainfall, small particles in the air are apparently making storm systems over the Pacific larger before they eventually break.
Moreover, in January 2007 Stanford University, USA, showed that air pollution is reducing ground-level winds in California. This, in turn is reducing the amount of evaporation from the ground, lakes and rivers.
Conclusion is that we are changing the planet's water cycle in many ways: in the intensity of storms, in the redistribution of precipitation, by making clouds live longer and cover larger areas and by slowing low-level winds.
