The environment we are living in for the next five months is a number of metal tubes connected together, and we consume endlessly recycled air and water, living in artificial lighting. Our home in space is a marvel of technology and it is a huge achievement that engineers built a structure that supports seven people in the most harsh environment we know – radiation, intense cold and heat, vacuum and no air await us behind the thin walls of our modules. We can look down at our planet that offers everything life needs to survive. See the thin blue line that turns green on the night-time photo? That is our atmosphere that protects us from space. The International Space Station provides for everything we need to survive, but so does "Spaceship Earth". We get to see our amazing planet out of the windows, but when you miss something you really realise how important it is. #WorldEnvironmentDay

Arriving on the coast of Madagascar, you’re greeted by the unbelievable tones of red…the Betsiboka river mouth, and its unbelievable (but true) veins of red flowing into the sea for dozens of kilometers… I took almost the exact same picture during Proxima and people have since explained to me that the red is an example of dramatic erosion – soil that is washing away from rainfall into the river and the Sea. The beautiful colours I see from space is actually a consequence of very concerning land loss. A focus of this year's World Environment Day is on erosion and how the #GenerationRestoration can get active to limit the effects and preserve our environment. www.worldenvironmentday.global

You will enjoy this more if you View On Black Please don't forget to press F11

World Environment Day (WED), commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. How times have changed since World Environment Day was launched by the United Nations General Assembly 37 years ago. We wonder if they considered then that today climate change, global warming, and other environmental impacts would have such an impact on world hunger and poverty.

Agriculture, which uses roughly 40 percent of the world's land, will be deeply affected by climate change in the coming years. In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted that warming will lead to pest outbreaks, that climate-related severe weather will impact food security, and that rising temperatures will hurt production for farms in equatorial areas. Global warming could mean big business for greedy agriculture giants.

Combating man-made climate change and making the planet greener and cleaner is an issue for everyone. Climate change is no longer a distant, futuristic scenario, but an immediate threat. The impacts of climate change are unimaginable, shocking and going to be much worse than what we had anticipated today. Climate change offers humanity no second chances. We should find a way to measure the general well-being of the people and planet rather than just raw economic growth.

Like the carbon footprint, water footprints are one of the latest methods scientists and policy makers are using to assess humanity's impact on the planet. And now businesses are starting to use water footprinting as well. We can calculate our water footprint “here”.

We don't need to wait for governments to find a solution for global warming. By making simple changes in our life, we can reduce our carbon and water footprints and helps stop global warming. We Can Easily Green our Daily Routine and reduce the Global Warming phenomenon. View Tips “here”.

HAPPY WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2015.

Once again UNEP seeks to make the biggest global call and mobilization for action on 5 June, World Environment Day (WED).

The theme for 2015 is how the well-being of humanity, the environment and economies ultimately depends on the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources. Evidence is building that people are consuming far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably provide.

Many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development. By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our way of life. Living well within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future.

Let us make our world a greener place

Celebrate World Environment Day this 5 June! Every Year. Everywhere. Everyone.

Life-giving water. Recreation, too. A tropical downpour in Bragança, Pará offers a rare opportunity to cool off from torrid equatorial heat.

On a trip to Port Aransas, TX we took a dolphin watching trip (actually 2 - one near sunset, one the next morning). This is a group of bottle nosed dolphins surfing the wake of the boat. In the background you can see three cold stacked semi-submersible drilling rigs (ultra deep water ones that can operate in over 10,000 feet of water and drill as much as 35,000 feet below that).

This is for 117 pictures in 2017, #5 "World Environment Day). I had in mind a different photo, but decided to use this when the opportunity presented itself. The theme of this year's WED is "Connecting People With Nature", which this boat tour certainly does. The background reminds us that we need to do a bit more protecting than we have been.

Tips to GO GREEN...

* It would seem to go without saying, but many of us forget that we can save water in simple ways like not letting the tap run while shaving, washing your face, or brushing your teeth.

* Insulating your water heater will help save valuable energy, and you can go the extra mile by installing showerheads with a low flow in your bathrooms for bathing purposes to help save water. You can also put a timer on your heaters to save power.

* Using an electric razor or hand razor with replaceable blades instead of disposable razors goes a long way to cutting back on waste. And plant a tree.

* Use towels for drying your face and hands instead of tissues that are used and thrown away. Also, hang your towels to dry so that they can be reused several times. You are after all clean when you use them!

* Juice or yoghurt lovers can do their bit by buying juice in concentrates and yoghurt in reusable containers instead of single serving packages.

* Many of us like to leaf through the paper as we munch on breakfast, but consider reading the dailies in communal spaces like the office or coffee shops. However, if you prefer to have your own copy, make sure you recycle!

* When packing your lunch, opt for reusable containers for food storage instead of wrapping the food with aluminum foil or plastic wrap.

* As you leave the house, don’t forget to switch off all the lights and appliances at the wall unit (if you have this feature) and unplug chargers as they continue to consume even if they are not charging; saving energy helps reduce air pollution.

Wear Green dress and support this cause and spread awareness today. I am already in green ;-)

On World Environment Day..

Although this year's theme is 'Many Species. One Planet. One Future' , I chose the 1989's theme for the title as global warming is becoming evident day by day...

Need to take some preventive measures before it's too late...or who knows if it's already late....

5th May 2020:

It's World Environment Day today and my brain feels like a damp sponge. It wasn't quite nice enough to go out and there were things I wanted to get done at home.

So I simply went into the garden and took a photo of the hill, although I did like the colours, just wish some of the daisies or buttercups had pushed up again. At least they will in time.

And for the Silly News it's : National Bubbly Day - nationaldaycalendar.com/days-2/national-bubbly-day-first-...

None of which I can drink.

Or : National Yo-Yo Day - nationaldaycalendar.com/days-2/national-yo-yo-day-june-6/

I loved them.

Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites.

Most important thing I feel is to avoid/ban plastic bags for a better planet

Info:

Since June 5, 1972, the planet has annually celebrated World Environment Day (WED), a day which calls for environmental conservation through global action. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, Unep.org) leads and organizes WED, creating a yearly theme and selecting a host country which is setting an example for green policies. The theme for WED 2010 is “Many Species. One Planet. One Future,” an idea which brings to attention the urgency required to protect the planet’s dwindling diversity.

Rwanda has been chosen as the 2010 WED host country, and there are good reasons why. The East African nation has initiated numerous eco-friendly policies, such as clean-up campaigns, restorations of area rainforests, implementation of renewable energy sources, and a ban on plastic bags, all despite the country’s other challenges.

That day will come.

The earth will burn...and the earth will sink.

Even the fittest won't survive.

Probably we prefer death to wonderful life...

Otherwise, why we're hastening the day of doom?

I wish you all a happy world environment day.The World Environment Day(WED) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Hosted every 5th of June by a different city and commemorated with an international exposition through the entire week, WED is used by the United Nations to stimulate awareness of the environment and encourage political attention and public action. Conservation of nature is greatly important for the preservation of human species and with the menace of Global Warming looming large constantly, WED, which addresses this problem, is all the more significant. You too can do your bit to contribute to this important event.

Go Green

WAH are visiting dirty water today. Since we are now deluged by rain (thank goodness we had sun at the weekend!) this seems very appropriate

we try to recycle our water, but in Cornwall, it doesn't always feel necessary!

Green Economy: Does it include you?

Commemorated every year on 5 June, World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The theme of the World Environment Day 2012 is Green Economy: Does it include you?

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) defines a Green Economy as 'one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.'

We can do MORE.....Please share how are you saving the environment.

Happy World Environment Day

The earth is old. 5 billion years old. In that time, millions of species have evolved and become extinct. Humanity is but a temporary blip in this vast canvas over time. And yet, in that short time, we have somehow managed to impact the environment in ways very few other life forms have. And these changes have left permanent scars, and has happened at a rate faster than the life in this planet can adapt. Examples abound, from increasing CO2 levels, rapid deforestation, and higher-than-average rates of species extinction. And at such a scale, these impacts are but a statistic. And when a calamity becomes a statistic, we often tend to ignore it. And change never happens.

What triggers change is usually individual events that take on viral lives of their own - the death of the last wild southern white rhino, the recent tragic killing of a pregnant elephant in India, the illegal trophy hunting of Cecil the Lion, the death of Harambe, and so many more. It was one such event that spurred me think of the pain and the grief these creatures go through from a decision not of their in making. It was, needless to say, an emotional day.

These animals paid and continue pay the price for a choice humanity made. One cannot reverse it, but I hope to help reduce the impact we have impressed on the one life-bearing planet. On this World Environment Day, both my partner and I have pledged to donate 5% of our income to charities focused on preserving the environment, and on helping the other species who cohabit this planet survive and thrive. It may be a small amount, but over time, we hope to increase it and have even more impact.

Well you join me?

Text by Soumya Menon - A Living Root Bridge, near Mawlynnong village.

In a region which receives the maximum rainfall, where the terrain is rugged, with steep cliffs and rapid flowing rivers from waterfalls originating higher up in the mountains, these bridges serve to connect otherwise inaccessible villages, deep in the mountains.

The Indian Banyan -the Ficus benghalensis- grows on giant boulders by sheer cliff faces or along river banks, sending many secondary roots from the tree trunk down to the rivers. The roots (and branches) of the Ficus benghalensis are cleverly engineered by the War Khasi people to form this bridge, unique to this region, and a marvel to behold.
